  • In this study, the impact of assigned pixel labels on the accuracy of crack image identification of steel structures is examined by using an atrous separable convolution neural network (ASCNN). Firstly, images containing fatigue cracks collected from steel structures are classified into four datasets by assigning different pixel labels based on image features. Secondly, the DeepLab v3+ algorithm is used to determine optimal parameters of the ASCNN model by maximizing the average mean-intersection-over-union (mIoU) metric of the datasets. Thirdly, the ASCNN model is trained for various image sizes and hyper-parameters, such as the learning rule, learning rate, and epoch. The optimal parameters of the ASCNN model are determined based on the average mIoU metric. Finally, the trained ASCNN model is evaluated by using 10% untrained images. The result shows that the ASCNN model can segment cracks and other objects in the captured images with an average mIoU of 0.716.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the asbestos exposure levels and to calculate excess lifetime cacer risks(ELCRs) in asbestos-containing buildings for maintenance and management. The range of airborne asbestos concentration of 33 buildings was 0.0018 ~ 0.0126 f/cc and one site exceeded indoor air-quality recommended limit 0.01 f/cc. And ELCRs based on US EPA IRIS(Integrated risk information system) model are 1.5E-06 ~ 3.9E-05 levels, and there was no site showed 1.0E-04 (one person per million) level or more, and 11 sites showed 1.0E-05 (one person per 100,000 people) level or more. To prevent the release of asbestos fibers, it needs operation and maintenance of asbestos-containing building materials, and there are some methods such as removal, repairment, enclosure and encapsulation. In conclusion, a risk-based air action level for asbestos in air is an appropriate metric for asbestos-containing building management.

  • In Mobile Ad-hoc Network, link failure and packet loss may occur frequently due to its nature of mobility and limited battery life. In this paper, an enhanced robust routing protocol based on AODV(Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing) by monitoring variation of receiving signal strength is proposed. New metric function that consists of node mobility and hops of path is used for routing decision. For preventing route failure by node movement during data transmission, a new route maintenance is presented. If the node movement is detected, the routing agent switches local path to its neighbor node. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed routing scheme is superior to previous AODV protocol.

  • We need a component-based system to reflect software changes in user's requirements, to implement a system at a rapid speed as well as to efficiently manage the system in a maintenance phase and to easily change software. Moreover, the component-based system has a merit in development cost. However, existing component development methodology for implement of component-based system is inefficient in object identification for component identification. Moreover, the existing component development methodology also fails to provide any method to identify system component. It merely provides procedures and methods to identify business component focused on a whole system domain. In addition, it has another problem that it considerably relies on developer's experiences and intuitions for component identification. Therefore, according to this paper, RUP (Rational Unified Process) is applied from a requirement analysis phase to an object identification phase in order to improve the inefficiency of object identification. In addition, this paper procedures and methods for system component identification, and identifies business components based on the identified system component, rather than on the whole system domain. This paper also provides and applies cohesion metric and coupling metric so as to overcome the problem that component identification depends on developer's intuitions and experiences. Accordingly, the component identification method proposed in this paper, may identify components more effectively based on facility of object identification, functional reusability of components, traceability, and independence of components.

  • The component-based development methodology aims at the high state of abstraction and the reusability with components larger than classes. It is indispensible to measure the component so as to improve the quality of the component-based system and the individual component. And, the quality of the component should be improved through putting the results into the process of the development. So, it is necessary to study the component metric which can be applied in the stage of the component analysis and design. Hence, in this paper, we propose component cohesion, coupling, independence metrics reflecting the information extracted in the step of component analysis and design. The proposed component metric bases on the similarity information about behavior patterns of operations to offer the component's service. Also, we propose the redesigning process for the improvement of component design. That process uses the techniques of clustering and is for the thing that makes the component as the independent functional unit having the low complexity and easy maintenance. And, we examine that the component design model can be improved by the component metrics and the component redesigning process.

Abstract Object-oriented systems are developed by means of classes; that is, classes captures the essential entities or concepts in the problem domain, and the system is embodied by the interactions of objects instantiated from the classes. In addition to the basic units of object-oriented systems, classes serves as the units of encapsulation, which considerably promote the modifiability and the extensibility of them. However, improper modeling in the design phase or uncontrolled changes during the maintenance phase can degrade the quality of classes, which leads to systems cumbersome to maintain and extend.Cohesion refers to the degree of connectivity among the elements of a single module, and is being used as a factor which characterizes the quality of a module. In this paper, we propose a new cohesion metric for assessing the quality of classes. If a class captures properly the essential features of objects, the members of the class surely have strong relationship among them. On the contrary, the poor relationship among class members can indicate that the class is not a proper model of objects.

  • Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) refer to autonomous networks in which wireless data communications are established between multiple nodes in a given coverage area without a base station or centralized administration. Because of node mobility and limited battery life, the network topology may changes frequently. Selecting the most reliable path during route discovery process is important to improve performance in ad hoc networks. In this paper, an enhanced routing protocol based on AODV(Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector routing) by monitoring variation of receiving signal strength is proposed. New metric function that consists of node mobility and hops of path is used for routing decision. For preventing route failure by node movement during data transmission, a new route maintenance named as LRC (Local Route Change) is presented. If the node movement is detected, the routing agent switches path to its neighbor node in LRC. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed routing scheme is superior to previous AODY protocol.

  • Under the influence of software security-enhanced development guidelines announced in 2012, secure coding practices become widely applicable in developing information systems aiming to enhance security capabilities. Although continuous enhancement activities for code security is important, management issues for code security have been less addressed in the guidelines. This paper analyses limitation of secure coding practices from the viewpoint of quality management. In particular this paper suggests structures and the use of software metrics from coding to maintenance phases so that it can be of help in the future by extending the use of security metrics.

  • Recent requirements in component management of building systems have focused on the requirement for improving methods and metric tools to support component condition assessment and appropriate decisions for infrastructure owned facilities. Although engineers and researchers have focused on developing methodologies for component assessment in recent years but there is not enough attention dedicate to facilities and components that have been constructed. This paper is a literature study of scientific papers within the topic of component condition index system (CCIS) in the period 1976 to 2009. Infrastructure component condition index had existed for some 40 years. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of CCIS to identify the suitable method for component condition assessment during its service life. This paper finds that the focus of CCIS, surveyed in several aspects during the 40 years that have been investigated, from technology to measurement and from assessment function to component maintenance as an integrated part of the infrastructure component management. This study offers help to researchers in understanding the selection of an appropriate method for component condition assessment in building and non-building systems.

  • Recently, as interest in IoT (Internet of Things) increase, research and standardization of a new protocol which reflects the characteristics of IoT has progressed. Among them, RPL(IPv6 for Low-Power Lossy Network) is a standardized routing protocol for IoT. RPL utilizes DIO (DODAG Information Object) messages which is flooded from the sink node to the whole network for path establish and maintenance. However, in large scale networks, not only a long time is required to propagate the DIO message to the whole networks but also a bottleneck effect around the sink node is occurred. Multi-sink based approaches which take advantage of reducing routing overhead and bottleneck effect are widely used to solve these problems. In this paper, we define 'unnecessary path update problems' that may arise when applying the RPL protocol to the multi sink based IoT networks and propose two methods namely Routing Metric based Path Update Decision method and Immediate Successor based Path Update Decision method for selective routing update.
