  • A volumetric gear pump is often used in extensive industrial applications to provide both high pressure and sufficiently high flow rate by physical displacement of finite volume of fluid with each revolution. To better understand the unsteady flow characteristics within the pump, numerical simulations were conducted by using moving dynamic meshing (MDM) techniques in commercially available CFD software, FLUENT. The effects of rotor clearance size and rotational speed of rotor on the flow characteristics, specially the temporal variation of velocity and pressure field, which is a main source of flow noise, was investigated. The results showed that significant reverse flow is developed in the rotor clearance and that its size is one of the most important factors affecting flow characteristics and pressure pulsation.

  • A turbo pump unit provides high pressure oxygen and fuel in a space shuttle main engine (SSME). This paper focused on rotordynamics, investigating its characteristics based on a numerical simulation of turbo pump finite element model. Speeds up to 50,000 rpm are considered, as well as the special problems related to elastic-ring, seal hydrodynamic force, shroud force and clearance-excitation farce. The rotordynamic prediction shows that the elastic-ring which is inserted between the casing and the outer race of ball bearing allows far an acceptable separate margin of first critical speed. Additionally, the results show that the floating ring seal, which have a peculiar ring, adds substantial stiffness and damping to the system as well as exhibits superior performance in terms of rotordynamic stability of system compared to the plain seal.

  • The performance of a regenerative pump is affected by many parameters, especially blade shape of impeller, leakage flow in the clearance and head losses at the inlet & outlet. An impeller with J-shape blade was designed and 5 times scale up model was tested at similarity conditions to evaluate the performance. Performance variations with clearance change were executed. The amounts of leakage flow through the clearance were estimated using the one-dimensional leakage flow models and analysis. Main leakage flow is generated through the gap between the impeller and casing. The inlet & outlet head losses were also estimated. Such corrections are very important to evaluate the final performance of the impeller and pump. Cavitation test was also performed at 1,200 rpm. NPSH of the regenerative pump was obtained and growth of cavity within blades was visualized.

  • An internal lobe pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications. In particular, the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. The subject of this paper is the theoretical analysis of internal lobe pump whose the main components are the rotors: usually the outer one is characterized by lobe with elliptical and involute shapes, while the inner rotor profile is determined as conjugate to the other. And the integrated design system which is composed of three main modules has been developed through AutoLISP under AutoCAD circumstance plus CFD-ACE+. It generates new lobe profile and calculates automatically the flow rate and flow rate irregularity according to the lobe profile generated. CFD simulation results show trends similar to those carried out in experiments, and a quantitative comparison is presented. Results obtained from the automotive integrated design system enable the designer and manufacturer of oil pump to be more efficient in this field.

  • Large hydraulic excavator weighted 90 tons used the several pumps installed in parallel to use the hydraulic pump driving gearbox to improve fuel consumption by improving the energy efficiency of the hydraulic system. Gearbox connected to hydraulic pump supply the mechanical output to the high pressure and low pressure pump to be supplied by torque and rotation, which are the mechanical power, through a input shaft connected to large size engine of the excavator. So, gearbox connected to hydraulic pump is same as main artery in the human body and is required long life because it operates the hydraulic pump continuously during operating the engine. This study had used oil contamination analysis method to check the wear characteristics of the gearbox and frequency response characteristic analysis method to check the failure of the teeth failures of gearbox, while the test equipment adopted by the electrical feedback method to reduce the energy consumption was operating for the life assessment, in which the required power was 600 kW input power.
