Mahalanobis-Taguchi system(MTS) is a statistical tool for classifying the normal group and abnormal group in multivariate data structures. In addition to the classification itself, the MTS uses a method for selecting variables useful for the classification. This method can be used efficiently especially when the abnormal group data are scattered without a specific directionality. When the feedback adjustment procedure through the measurements of the process output for controlling process input variables is not practically possible, the reset procedure can be an alternative one. This article proposes a reset procedure using the MTS. Moreover, a method for identifying input variables to reset is also proposed by the use of the contribution. The identification of the root-cause parameters using the existing dimension-reduced contribution tends to be difficult due to the variety of correlation relationships of multivariate data structures. However, it became possible to provide an improved decision when used together with the location-centered contribution and the individual-parameter contribution.

This paper proposes an algorithm to obtain the time-to-contact between an observer and a target and surface orientation of the target. These two physical elements are computed from the image deformation of a known shape, which is extracted by supervised classification of detected line segments based on MAP and Mahalanobis distance. The proposed algorithm was applied to the natural outdoor traffic scene and would contribute to the development for a collision avoidance system.
We have studied the dissolution kinetics of two fast releasing tablets in four media, and the similarity of dissolution profiles was compared using 3 methods. Two of the methods were introduced from statistical algorithm of distance methods, which are maximum distance and Mahalanobis distance. The dissolution kinetics were also analysed using FDA method for similarity evaluation, and the results were compared with those obtained using the distance methods.
In this paper, we introduce MTS(Mahalanobis-Taguchi System) Method which is suggested Dr. Taguchi in later 1990. We apply MTS Method for Quality Competitive Appraisal System(QCAS) Model which is executived from 1997 by Agency for Technology and Standards, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy(MOCIE). We can measure company Quality competitive by using MTS. MTS Measure can not be compared statistical sum by calculated QCAS. MTS can be possible distinct subtle which can not distinct using statistical sum. Also MTS Method can seek more strong effect factor among of many factor. If A Company use MTS Method, can find vital factor and level of destination.

Industrial processes need to be monitored in real-time based on the input-output data observed during their operation. Abnormalities in an induction motor should be detected early in order to avoid costly breakdowns. To early identify induction motor faults, this paper effectively estimates spectral envelopes of each induction motor fault by utilizing a linear prediction coding (LPC) analysis technique and an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Moreover, this paper classifies induction motor faults into their corresponding categories by calculating Mahalanobis distance using the estimated spectral envelopes and finding the minimum distance. Experimental results shows that the proposed approach yields higher classification accuracies than the state-of-the-art approach for both noiseless and noisy environments for identifying the induction motor faults.
A pressurizer is a major equipment system in a nuclear power plant (NPP) and controls the reactor cooling system pressure within the allowable range. Faults in the pressurizer can be critical to the NPP; therefore, early fault detection in the pressurizer is significant for NPP safety. This study applies Mahalanobis Taguchi system (MTS), which is one of the promising pattern classification methods, based on the Mahalanobis distance concept and Taguchi quality engineering theory to the early fault detection problem of the pressurizer pressure control system. We conducted experiments using data from full scope NPP simulator based on a pressurizer pressure transmitter faults scenario to validate the faults detection performance of MTS. As a result, MTS can rapidly detect the faults compared to conventional faults detection based on single sensor monitoring.

Robotic GMA (Gas Metal Arc) welding process is one of widely acceptable metal joining process. The heat and mass inputs are coupled and transferred by the weld arc to the molten weld pool and by the molten metal that is being transferred to the weld pool. The amount and distribution of the input energy are basically controlled by the obvious and careful choices of welding process parameters in order to accomplish the optimal bead geometry and the desired quality of the weldment. To make effective use of automated and robotic GMA welding, it is imperative to predict online faults for bead geometry and welding quality with respect to welding parameters, applicable to all welding positions and covering a wide range of material thickness. MD (Mahalanobis Distance) technique was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA welding process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data. To successfully accomplish this objective, two sets of experiment were performed with different welding parameters; the welded samples from SM 490A steel flats. First, a set of weldments without any faults were generated in a number of repeated sessions in order to be used as references. The experimental results of current and voltage waveforms were used to predict the magnitude of bead geometry and welding quality, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and online welding faults. Statistical models developed from experimental results which can be used to quantify the welding quality with respect to process parameters in order to achieve the desired bead geometry based on weld quality criteria.
This study presents a procedure for discrimination of artificial events from earthquakes occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula using data set in the Wonju KSRS seismograph network, Korea. Two training sets representing natural and artificial earthquakes were constructed with 150 and 56 events, respectively, with high signal to noise ratio. A frequency band, Pg(4-6 Hz)/Lg(5-7 Hz), which is optimal for the discrimination of seismic sources was derived from the two-dimensional grid of Pg/Lg spectral amplitude ratio. The corrections for the effects of earthquake magnitude and hypocentral distance were carried out for improvement of discrimination capability. For correcting the effect of magnitude dependence due to the inverse proportionality of corner frequency to seismic moment, the Brune's source spectrum was subtracted from the observation spectrum. The spectrum was corrected using the optimal damping coefficient to remove damping effect with the hypocentral distance. The effect of locally varying spectrum ratio was cancelled correcting variation of wave propagation along the ray path. The performance in discrimination between training sets of natural and artificial events was compared using the Mahalanobis distance in each step of correction. The procedure of magnitude, distance, and path corrections show clear improvements of the discrimination results with increasing Mahalanobis distance, from 1.98 to 3.01, between two training sets.

Since thermal power plant (TPP) equipment is operated under very high pressure and temperature, failures of the equipment give rise to severe losses of life and property. To prevent the losses, fault detection method is, therefore, absolutely necessary to identify abnormal operating conditions of the equipment in advance. In this paper, we present Mahalanobis distance (MD) based fault detection method for steam boiler tube in TPP. In the MD-based method, it is supposed that abnormal data samples are far away from normal samples. Using multivariate samples collected from normal target system, mean vector and covariance matrix are calculated and threshold value of MD is decided. In a test phase, after calculating the MDs between the mean vector and test samples, alarm signals occur if the MDs exceed the predefined threshold. To demonstrate the performance, a failure case due to boiler tube leakage in 200MW TPP is employed. The experimental results show that the presented method can perform early detection of boiler tube leakage successfully.
