  • This paper presents a proof-of-concept of a wheel-based magnetostrictive energy harvester (EH), which is a vibration-based EH. Coil-wound Galfenol cantilevers with two permanent magnets (PMs) act EH, while rotating wheels provide a forced vibration to EH. Four different cantilevers are designed and simulated for various end deflection. As expected from the simulation, the cantilever end deflection with triple cavity is the most. Three experiments are conducted to characterize the EH: the first with a magnetostrictive actuator, the second with a motor-driven wheel, and the third with the dummy weights. From the first experiment, the power reaches about 50 mV due to the relatively small displacement of the magnetostrictive actuator. From the second experiment, the power reaches about 120 mW. The power from the Galfenol cantilever is estimated to be about 60% of the total power from the wheel-based magnetostrictive EH.

  • This paper deals with the feasibility assessment of hybrid linear motor that operates based on self-moving cell concept. The moving cell is composed of Magnetostrictive actuator and a ring structure, and a cell train is constructed by connecting two cells in series. Since this motor uses strong push force of Terfenol-D actuators and friction of the cells, it can essentially produce long stroke and large force. The overall performance of the motor was measured in terms of speed and force.

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) composites composed of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric materials derive interfacial coupling of magnetoelectric conversion between magnetic and electric properties, thus enabling to detect ultra-low magnetic field. To improve the performance of ME composite sensors, various research teams have explored adopting highly efficient magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases, tailoring of device geometry/structure, and developing signal process technique. As a result, latest ME composites have achieved not only outstanding ME conversion coefficient but also sensing of ultra-low magnetic field below 1pT. This article reviews the recent research trend of ME composites for sensing of ultra-low magnetic field.

  • The effects of biasing magnetic fields on the performances of magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers are investigated. The transducers are patch-type ones which are used for SHM of plate structures. Various kinds of configurations of biasing magnets are covered experimentally. It is experimentally verified that how the biasing magnetic field deploys is the most significant factors on maximizing the transducer output. From the magnetostriction curve of nickel, it is concluded qualitatively that it is not the absolute values of biasing magnetic field but the slope of magnetostriction curve to be taken account of.

  • Terfenol-D is one of several magnetostrictive materials with property of converting energy into mechanical motion, and vice versa. Magnetostriction is the property that causes certain ferromagnetic materials to change shape in a magnetic field. Terfenol-D is said to produce giant magnetostriction, strain greater than any other commercially available smart material. In this paper, fundamental characteristics analysis of giant magnetostrictive materials(Terfenol-D) has been investigated. The magnetic field analysis is carried out by using finite element method simulation ANSYS. The results show 223N in force and 9.5T in maximum magnetic flux density and 7.56 $10^6A/m$ in maximum magnetic field intensity 1A current. Through the analysis, basic data of Terfenol-D for the application of mechanical system are obtained.

  • The on-line monitoring for the wall thinning in secondary system has been considered one of main issues for the safety of nuclear power plants. To establish the on-line monitoring technique for the pipe wall thinning, the development of the ultrasonic transducer working in high-temperature is very important. In this investigation, the magnetostrictive transducer is concerned for high temperature condition up to $300^{\circ}C$. The magnetostrictive transducer has many advantages such as high working temperature, durability, cost-effectiveness, and shear waves, most of all. A thin Fe-Co alloy patch whose Curie temperature is over $900^{\circ}C$ was employed as a ferromagnetic material for magnetostriction. Wave transduction experiments in various temperature were carried out and the effect of bias magnets was considered together with the dry coupling performance of the transducer. From experimental results, consequently, it was found that the magnetostrictive transducer works stable even in high temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$ and can be a promising method for the on-line monitoring of the wall thinning in nuclear power plants.

  • In this thesis, we fabricate a zero-magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon measure the impeadance effect, and then Investigate possibility as a sensor material. $Co_{72.5}$F $e_{0.5}$M $o_{2}$ $B_{15}$ S $i_{5}$ is used as composition of specimen alloy. We first melt the specimen in high frequency induction furnace and then rapidly quench it by using single roll technique. As the result, we obtain a ribbon where thickness is 12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, width is 1mm and length is 93mm. Consequently, it is proved through this study that zero-magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon can be used as an excellent magnetic sensor material.rial.l.

  • In order to apply for pickling line in cold rolling process, a high power magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was developed. The transducer is expected to overcome the shortcomings of conventional high power ultrasonic transducers. The transducer consists of Fe-Co-V alloy sheets for the magnetostrictive material, an ultrasonic horn made of Hastelloy to withstand acid solution, and electric driving circuit. In the development, the transducer was designed with the theoretical and numerical methods such as finite element method, and was characterized with experimental water tanks. The developed transducers turned out to be able to generate the sound pressure up to 20,000 Pa, and to be suitable for application ...

  • This paper is concerned with the fabrication of (Fe,Co)-Si-B amorphous magneto-strictive wire which attracts strong attention as a new sensor material. First, we put the ingot of (Fe$\sub$1-x/Co$\sub$x/)$\sub$77/Si$\sub$8/B$\sub$15/ composition into quartz tube. Then, under the condition of 400MHz and 8kW, we melt and mix the in-got in the high frequency induction furnance. After that, we obtain the magnetostrictive wire of 100∼150$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter by injection and rapid quenching within the high rotating water. Finally, we find that the wire is under the amorphous state.
