  • Magnetostrictive actuators have seen increasing use in fine positioning system because it has many advantages such as friction free, resolution of ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ or nm scale, and powerful output force. Usually, the magnetic circuit of magnetostrictive actuator has components which are flux return path, coil, and magnetostrictive material. It is classified in two types according to existence of the permanent magnet. The magnetic circuit having optimal performances transfer magnetic field which is obtained by providing input current at coil without energy loss. This paper described mathematical model of magnetic circuit for getting design variables. The modeling equation is obtained from the relations between flux and reluctance of the magnetic equivalent circuit. Also, finite element analysis has been used to study the performance of magnetic circuit according to change of design variables such as existence and shape of the permanent magnet, flux return path etc. The modification of dimensions enables us to optimize magnetic circuit.

  • Magnetostrictive materials are routinely employed as actuator and sensor elements in a wide variety of noise and vibration control problems. In infrastructural applications, other technologies such as hydraulic actuation, piezoelectric materials and more recently, magnetorheological fluids, are being favored for actuation and sensing purposes. These technologies have reached a degree of technical maturity and in some cases, cost effectiveness, which justify their broad use in infrastructural applications. Advanced civil structures present new challenges in the areas of condition monitoring and repair, reliability, and high-authority actuation which motivate the need to explore new methods and materials recently developed in the areas of materials science and transducer design. This paper provides an overview of a class of materials that because of the large force, displacement, and energy conversion effciency that it can provide is being considered in a growing number of quasistatic and dynamic applications. Since magnetostriction involves a bidirectional energy exchange between magnetic and elastic states, magnetostrictive materials provide mechanisms both for actuation and sensing. This paper provides an overview of materials, methods and applications with the goal to inspire novel solutions based on magnetostrictive materials for the design and control of advanced infrastructural systems.

  • This work is the attempt to give qualitative explanations to complex magnetic phenomena which are observed in the previously proposed magnetostrictive sensor capable of ultrasonic waves and rotational speed measurement. The law of approach is adopted as analysis tool in order to account for some extraordinary output patterns and proved to be effective. The distance between the anhysteretic curve current magnetic state and the variation of anhysteretic curve by stress mainly determine the sensor output shapes and their uniqueness. It is also experimentally verified that the precisely determined bias magnetic field strength can not only remove the unusual output parts but also maximize its sensitivity.

  • Terfenol-D is one of magnetostrictive materials which have the property of converting the energy in magnetic fields into mechanical movement and vice versa. We designed and fabricated a linear magnetostrictive actuator using Terfenol-D. It has 25mm diameter and 100mm long. To grasp the characteristics of it, n series of tests were performed in the range of 50Hz below. Induced-strain actuation displacements of the actuator measured by test and predicted by magnetic analysis agreed well. And blocked forces according to the input currents were estimated from the testing results. Modelling method representing the exerting force of a linear magnetostrictive actuator was confirmed through some testing results.

  • Terfenol-D is one of several magnetostrictive materials with property of converting energy into mechanical motion, and vice versa. Magnetostriction is the property that causes certain ferromagnetic materials to change shape in a magnetic field. Terfenol-D is said to produce giant magnetostriction, strain greater than any other commercially available smart material. In this paper, fundamental characteristics analysis of giant magnetostrictive materials(Terfenol-D) has been investigated. The magnetic field analysis is carried out by using finite element method simulation ANSYS. The results show 223N in force and 9.5T in maximum magnetic flux density and 7.56 $10^6A/m$ in maximum magnetic field intensity 1A current. Through the analysis, basic data of Terfenol-D for the application of mechanical system are obtained.

  • This paper presented the development and real-time control of a magnetostrictive micro actuator. Magnetostrictive material has many advantages such as high response time, precision displacement and powerful output force. But Magnetostrictive material has characteristic of hysteresis. Conventional Preisach model which based on experimental data is not suitable to the real-time control because of controlling a magnetostrictive system by Preisach model costs a lot of calculating time. And, we prove the validity of proposed model through the experimental comparison between the classical Preisach model and the proposed one.

  • This paper presents ejection of high viscosity fluids with magnetostrictive inkjet printhead(Magjet), which is not common with any other printhead. The MagJet uses a magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D rod with 10-mm in diameter and 50-mm in length, as an actuation mechanism. It has been known that high viscosity is often an obstacle in ejecting small and mono-disperse droplets. We calculated required pressure with fluidic inertia (Bernoulli equation) and viscous loss (Hagen Poiseuille equation). The required pressure for ejecting a droplet is 1300kPa. The generated force and displacement with Terfenol-D rod are estimated to be 480N (2600kPa) and $28{\mu}m$, respectively. It was enough that Magjet eject high viscosity fluid (Max 1000cP). The experiments are performed to eject the high viscosity fluid with Magjet. The ejection of high viscosity fluids is successful with the aid of Terfenol-D's high performance.

  • Magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films are systematically investigated over a wide composition range from 40.2 to 68.1 at. % Tb. The films were fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering using a composite target which consists of an Fe plate and Tb chips. The microstructure, examined by X-ray diffraction, mainly consists of an amorphous phase and, at high Tb contents, a pure Tb phase also exists. A progressive change in the direction of anisotropy from the perpendicular to in-plane occurs as the Tb content increases and the boundary at which the anisotropy change occurs shifts significantly towards to higher Tb contents with the addition of B. The saturation magnetization exhibits maxima at the Tb contents of 42 and 48 at. % for Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films, respectively, and it is decreased by the addition of B. The coercive force, measured in the easy direction, decreases monotonically with the Tb content. Excellent magnetostrictive characteristics, particularly at low magnetic fields, are achieved in both Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films; for example, a magnetostriction of 138 ppm is obtained in a Tb-Fe-B thin film at a magnetic field as low as 30 Oe. The excellent magnetostrictive properties of the present thin films are supported by the equally excellent magnetic softness, the coercivity below 10 Oe and a typical squared-loop shape with the saturation field as low as 1 kOe. Due to the excellent low field magnetostrictive characteristics, the present Tb-Fe based thin films are thought to be suitable for Si based microdevices.

  • The magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of melt-spun ribbons of the alloys (R0.33Fe0.67)1-xBx (R=Tb0.3Dy0.7 and 0$\leq$x$\leq$0.06) are ivestigated as a function of wheel speed during melt-quenching. The saturation magnetiation of the alloys with a crystalline phase ranges from 70 to 80 emu/g and does not vary substantially with the B content. The saturation magnetization of an amorphous phase, which is formed at the condition of thigh wheel speed and high B content, is reduced significantly, however. The coercive force is minimum at x= 0.02 and increases monotonously with the further increase of B content when the microstructure mainly consists of a crystalline phase, but again it is reduced significantly by the formation of an amorphous phase. The low field sensitivity of magnetostriction with magnetic field is found to be good for the alloys with x$\leq$0.04 over a wide range of wheel speed. This magnetostrictive behavior is in contrast with that observed previously for Dy-Fe and Tb-Fe based alloys and is thought to be due to low intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the compound.

  • The design and test of an magnetostrictive linear motor(MLM) that operates based on self-moving cell concept is presented. The moving cell is composed of Terfenol-D linear actuator and a ring structure, and a cell train is constructed by connecting two cells in series. Since this motor uses the stroke of Terfenol-D actuators and friction force of the cells, it can essentially produce long stroke and large force. The overall performance of the MLM was measured in terms of speed and force. The pushing force is directly related with the friction force. This work is a proof-of-concept stage and investigation is necessary for realistic application.
