The effects of biasing magnetic fields on the performances of magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers are investigated. The transducers are patch-type ones which are used for SHM of plate structures. Various kinds of configurations of biasing magnets are covered experimentally. It is experimentally verified that how the biasing magnetic field deploys is the most significant factors on maximizing the transducer output. From the magnetostriction curve of nickel, it is concluded qualitatively that it is not the absolute values of biasing magnetic field but the slope of magnetostriction curve to be taken account of.

The main subject of this paper is to develop analytic method with which output power or sensitivity variations of a magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer can be estimated with no aid of experiments. After the bias magnetic field deployed over the patch is calculated using finite element analysis for magnetostatics, the representative value is extracted by averaging these field values. The operating point on the characteristic curve for magnetostriction is identified by this value and then the output performance is calculated from it. It is verified that the results from this simple model match well with those of its experimental version and some limits of this modeling technique are also considered.
Fundamental characteristics of Giant Magnetostrictive Alloy Terfenol-D$(Tb_{0.3}Dy_{0.7}Fe_{1.9\sim1.95})$ were measured by experiments. Magnetostrictions of Terfenol-D samples whose lengths are 15 and 25 mm have been measured under compressive stress from 0 to 14 MPa, when the applied magnetic field was up to 1200 Oe. The relationship between magnetostriction and field is shown graphically in the form of $H-{\lambda}$, curve. For the experiment, solenoid magnet and lever-arm-type stress equipment were designed and fabricated. The magnetostriction is measured by laser displacement measuring system and the stress applied to the sample is measured by load cell.
For the measurement of the magnetic field distribution with high spatial resolution and high accuracy, the magnetic field sensing probe must be non-magnetic, but the MFM probe and sub-millimeter-meter size Hall probe use a ferromagnetic tip and block, respectively, to increase the sensitivity. To overcome this drawback, we developed a micro-size search coil magnetometer which consists of a single turn search coil, Terfenol-D actuator, scanning system, and control software. To reduce the noise generated by the stray ac magnetic field of the actuator driving coil, we employed an even function $\lambda$-H magnetostriction curve and lock-in technique. Using the developed magnetometer, we were able to measure the magnetic field distribution with a magnetic field resolution of 1 mT and spatial resolution of $0.1mm{\times}0.2mm$ at a coil vibration frequency of 1.8 kHz.

This paper proposes a systematic approach for an accurate control of the Terfenol-D actuator taking into account hysteresis, modeled by applying the classical Preisach operator with memory curve. A desired input displacement is calculated by using the hysteresis inverter, which is fed into the actuator. Then the PI compensator corrects the error between the commanded and actual displacements. Experiments with the step responses show that the PI controller settles in 70 ms and the hybrid controller in 20 ms. It means that the concurrent application of two control schemes is effective to control the actuator.

In this paper, we have verified a low-voltage EM(elasto-magnetic) sensing technique for tensile force management of PSC(prestressed concrete) internal tendon in order to apply the technique to actual construction sites where stable power supply is difficult. From observation of past domestic and overseas PSC structural accident cases, it was found that PS tension is very important to maintain structural stability. In this paper, we have tried to measure the tensile force from a magnetic hysteresis curve through EM sensors according to voltage value by using relation between magnetostriction and stress of ferromagnetic material based on elastic-magnetic theory. For this purpose, EM sensor of double cylindrical coil type was fabricated and tensile force test equipment for PS tendon using hydraulic tensioning device was constructed. The experiment was conducted to confirm relationship between changes of permeability and tensile force from the measurement results of the maximum / minimum voltage amount. The change of magnetic hysteresis curve with magnitude of tensile force was also measured by reducing amount of voltage step by step. As a result, the slope of estimation equation in accordance with magnitude of magnetic field decreases with the voltage reduction. But it was confirmed a similar pattern of change of magnetic permeability for the magnetic hysteresis loop. So, in this study, it is considered that it is possible to manage the tensions of PSC internal tendon using EM sensing technique in low-voltage state.
The pseudo spin valve with a structure of Tl/CoFe(t $\AA$)/Cu(30 $\AA$)/NiFe(50 $\AA$)/Ta, showing giant magnetoresistance properties by utilizing coercivity difference between only two soft ferromagnetic layers were produced by d.c UHV magnetron sputtering system. In pseudo spin valve Ta/CoFe/Cu/NiFe/Ta, the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties with change of CoFe thickness were investigated. When the thickness of CoFe was 60 $\AA$, a typical MR curve of pseudo spin valve structure was obtained, showing MR ratio of 3.8 cio and the coercivity difference of 27.4 Oe with a sharp change of hard layer switching. When the CoFe thickness was varied from 20 to 100 $\AA$, coercivity difference between two layers was increased to 40 $\AA$. and decreased to 100 $\AA$ gradually. It is thought the change in coercivity of hard layer was due to the crystallinity and magnetostriction of thin CoFe layer. In order to improve the MR property in CoFe/Cu/NiFe trier layer structure, CoFe layer with change of 2-20 $\AA$ thick was inserted between Cu and NiFe. When the thickness of CoFe was 10 $\AA$, MR ratio was 6.7%, showing excellent MR property. This indicates 50 % higher than that of CoFe/Cu/NiFe pseudo spin valve.
Recently, non-destructive stress measurement method using magnetic anisotropy sensor has been applied to the construction site such as steel bridges and steel pipes. In addition, steel rib used in the tunnel construction site was found to be possible to measure the stress by non-destructive method. In this study, steel loading experiments using magnetic anisotropy sensor developed in Japan and strain gauges were conducted to derive stress sensitivity curve for domestic steel SS400. Also, additional steel loading experiments and numerical analysis were performed for evaluation of applicability for non-destructive stress measurement method using magnetic anisotropy sensor. As a result of this study, stress sensitivity curves for domestic steel SS400 were derived using output voltage measured by magnetic anisotropy sensor and average of stress measured by strain gauges depending on the measurement location. And as a result of comparing additional steel loading experiments with the numerical analysis, error level of magnetic anisotropy sensor is around 20MPa. When considering the level of the yield stress(245MPa) of steel, in case of using magnetic anisotropy sensor in order to determine the stress status of steel, it has sufficient accuracy in engineering. Especially, magnetic anisotropy sensor can easily identify the current state of stress which considers residual stress at steel structure that stress measurement sensor is not installed, so we found that magnetic anisotropy sensor can be applied at maintenance of steel structure conveniently.
