Property of Multi-Direction Mount Using Magneto-Rheological Fluid (MR유체를 이용한 다방향 제진형 마운트의 응답특성)

  • This paper presents property of the squeeze mode type mount using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR fluid). The mount can isolate multi-directional vibrations, and also effectively reduce the vibrations in a wide range of disturbance frequency by controling the applied magnetic field. The shape of the mount is the same that of squeeze film damper. In the present work, the performance of this mount was experimentally investigated according to changing the magnetic field strength.   • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid is applied to a controllable squeeze film damper(SFD) for stabilizing a flexible rotor system. ER fluid is a class of functional fluid whose yield stress varies according to the applied electric field strength, which is observed as viscosity variation of the fluid. In applying ER fluid to a SFD, a pair of rings of the damper can be used as electrodes. When the electrodes are divided into a horizontal pair and a vertical one, the SFD can produce damping force in each direction independently. A prototype of the directionally controllable SFD was constructed and its performance was experimentally and numerically investigated in the present work.

  • This paper deals with an application of Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid to a small size mount for precision equipment of automobiles. MR fluid is known as a class of functional fluids with controllable apparent viscosity of fluid by the applied magnetic field strength. A typical MR fluid is a suspension where pure iron particles of $1{\sim}20mm$ in diameter are dispersed in a liquid such as mineral oil or silicone oil, at the concentration of $20{\sim}40$ vol%. Electro magnetic coil is installed at the bottom of a variable-damping mount filled with MR fluid, and its performance was investigated experimentally. Furthermore, the properties of the MR Mount on experimental Study were explained analytically by mechanical model of the MR mount.

  • Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the frame. A low-cost MR damper, using magneto-rheological fluids, can produce variable damping forces by changing the current values in the magnetic coil. Experimental results show the comparison of the vibration attenuation performances between two different dampers. One test set-up uses a passive damper and another one uses a MR fluid damper. The test results showed that the vibration amplitude of the washing machine with the MR damper is much smaller than the case with the passive damper.

  • This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.

  • Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) rotatory dampers are normally used for controlling the constant rotation of machines and engines. In this research, such a device is proposed to act as variable stiffness device to alleviate the rotational oscillation existing in the many engineering applications, such as motor. Under such thought, the main purpose of this work is to characterize the nonlinear torque-angular displacement/angular velocity responses of an MRF based variable stiffness device in oscillatory motion. A rotational hysteresis model, consisting of a rotatory spring, a rotatory viscous damping element and an error function-based hysteresis element, is proposed, which is capable of describing the unique dynamical characteristics of this smart device. To estimate the optimal model parameters, a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is employed on the captured experimental data of torque, angular displacement and angular velocity under various excitation conditions. In MWOA, a nonlinear algorithm parameter updating mechanism is adopted to replace the traditional linear one, enhancing the global search ability initially and the local search ability at the later stage of the algorithm evolution. Additionally, the immune operation is introduced in the whale individual selection, improving the identification accuracy of solution. Finally, the dynamic testing results are used to validate the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm.

  • A practical and effective semi-active on-off control law is developed for vibration attenuation of a natural, multi-degree-of-freedom suspension system, when its operational response mode is available. It does not need the accurate system parameters and dynamics of semi-active actuator. It reduces the total vibratory energy of the system including the work done by external disturbances and the maximum energy dissipation direction of the semi-active control device is tuned to the operational response mode of the structure. The effectiveness of the control law is illustrated with a three degree-of-freedom excavator cabin model.
