Solenoid coil is one of the commonly used one in superconducting power machines because it can produce uniform magnetic field at the center of the coil. Most of the AC loss in a solenoid coil is magnetization loss which is generated by the perpendicular magnetic field. This paper compares the electrical characteristics of two solenoid coils made of YBCO wire and BSCCO wire. We made and tested the BSCCO solenoid coil and YBCO solenoid coil which had the same number of turns and inner diameter. Number of turns and inner diameter of both coils were 30 turns and 10cm, respectively. AC loss of both coils were calculated by using the finite element method. Result shows that AC loss of YBCO coil was about 1/7 of that of the BSCCO coil when the current was 40A.

In order to use a linear vibration motor for the actuator of a haptic interface, the motor must provide a higher reaction rate and longer service life than typical rotational motors with an eccentric mass. In this paper, we propose a linear vibration motor that is equipped with a voice-coil actuator and permanent-magnet springs. To concentrate the magnetic flux in the actuator, a Halbach-style magnetization pattern is used. Permanent-magnet springs replace mechanical springs to help increase the service life. We use the method of equivalent current sheets and the method of images to analyze and model the proposed vibration motor. These methods are validated using finite element analyses and experiments. A prototype motor is designed and fabricated. Tests with the prototype show the feasibility of the proposed linear vibration motor.

Effects of neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of the undoped $MgB_2$ and the carbon(C)-doped $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors, prepared by an in situ reaction process using Mg and B powder, were investigated. The prepared $MgB_2$ samples were neutron-irradiated at the neutron fluence of $10^{16}-10^{18}n/cm^2$ in a Hanaro nuclear reactor of KAERI involving both fast and thermal neutron. The magnetic moment-temperature (M-T) and magnetization-magnetic field (M-H) curves before/after irradiation were obtained using magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). The superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) and transition width were estimated from the M-T curves and critical current density ($J_c$) was estimated from the M-H curves using a Bean's critical model. The $T_cs$ of the undoped $MgB_2$ and C-doped $MgB_2$ before irradiation were 36.9-37.0 K and 36.6-36.8 K, respectively. The $T_cs$ decreased to 33.2 K and 31.6 K, respectively after irradiation at neutron fluence of $7.16{\times}10^{17}n/cm^2$, and decreased to 22.6 K and 24.0 K, respectively, at $3.13{\times}10^{18}n/cm^2$. The $J_c$ cross-over was observed at the high magnetic field of 5.2 T for the undoped $MgB_2$ irradiated at $7.16{\times}10^{17}n/cm^2$. The $T_c$ and $J_c$ variation after the neutron irradiation at various neutron fluences were explained in terms of the defect formation in the superconducting matrix by neutron irradiation.

Temperature dependence of magnetic moment (m-T) and the magnetization (M-H) at 5 K and 20 K of the in situ processed $MgB_2$ bulk pellets with/without carbon (C) doping were examined. The superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$), the superconducting transition width (${\delta}T$) and the critical current density ($J_c$) were estimated for ten test samples taken from the $MgB_2$ bulk pellets. The reliable m-T characteristics associated with the uniform $MgB_2$ formation were obtained for both $MgB_2$ pellets. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of all test samples of the undoped $MgB_2$ were the same each other as 37.5 K and 1.5 K, respectively. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of the C-doped $MgB_2$ were 36.5 K and 2.5 K, respectively. Unlike the m-T characteristics, there existed the difference among the M-H curves of the test samples, which might be caused by the microstructure variation. In spite of the slight $T_c$ decrease, the C doping was effective in enhancing the $J_c$ at 5 K.

Recently, multiferroic materials gain much attention due to their fascinating fundamental physical properties. These materials offer wide range of potential applications such as data storage, spintronic devices and sensors, where both electronic and magnetic polarizations can be coupled. Among single-phase multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3$ is typical because of the room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling in view of long-range magnetic- and ferroelectric-ordering temperatures. However, $BiFeO_3$ is well known to have large leakage current and small spontaneous polarization due to the existence of oxygen vacancies and other defects. Furthermore the magnetic moment of pure $BiFeO_3$ is very weak owing to its antiferromagnetic nature. Recently, various attempts have been performed to improve the multiferroic properties of $BiFeO_3$ through the co-doping at the A and the B sites, by making use of the fact that the intrinsic polarization and magnetization are associated with the lone pair of $Bi^{3+}$ ions at the A sites and the partially-filled 3d orbitals of $Fe^{3+}$ ions at the B sites, respectively. In this study, $BiFeO_3$, $Bi_{0.9}Ho_{0.1}FeO_3$, $BiFe_{0.97}Ni_{0.03}O_3$ and $Bi_{0.9}Ho_{0.1}Fe_{0.97}Ni_{0.03}O_3$ bulk compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering. High-purity $Bi_2O_3$, $Ho_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $NiO_2$ powders with the stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h to produce the samples. The samples were immediately put into an oven, which was heated up to $800^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 1 h. The crystalline structure of samples was investigated at room temperature by using a Rigaku Miniflex powder diffractometer. The field-dependent and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements were performed with a vibrating-sample magnetometer and superconducting quantum-interference device.
The use of soft magnetic materials have been increasing in the various industrial fields according to the increasing demand for high performance, automatic, miniaturing equipments in the recent our life. In this study, we investigated the effect of factors on the core loss and magnetic properties of electrical steel and soft magnetic composites. Furthermore, we reviewed the major efforts to reduce the core loss and improve the soft magnetic properties in the two main soft magnetic materials. Domain purification which results from reduced density of defects in cleaner electrical steels is combined with large grains to reduce hysteresis loss. The reduced thickness and the high electrical conductivity reduce the eddy current component of loss. Furthermore, the coating applied to the surface of electrical steel and texture control lead to improve high permeability and low core loss. There is an increasing interest in soft magnetic composite materials because of the demand for miniaturization of cores for power electronic applications. The SMC materials have a broad range of potential applications due to the possibility of true 3-D electromagnetic design and higher frequency operation. Grain size, sintering temperature, and the degree of porosity need to be carefully controlled in order to optimize structure-sensitive properties such as maximum permeability and low coercive force. The insulating coating on the powder particles in SMCs eliminates particle-to-particle eddy current paths hence minimizing eddy current losses, but it reduces the permeability and to a small extent the saturation magnetization. The combination of new chemical composition with optimum powder manufacturing processes will be able to result in improving the magnetic properties in soft magnetic composite materials, too.

$BiFeO_3$(BFO), when forming a solid solution with $BaTiO_3$(BTO), shows structural transformations over the entire compositional range, which not only gives a way to increase structural stability and electrical resistivity but also applies a means to have better ferromagnetic ordering. In this respect, we have prepared and studied 0.7BFO-0.3BTO thin films on $Pt(111)/TiO_2/SiO_2/Si$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Various deposition parameters, such as deposition temperature and oxygen pressure, have been optimized to get better quality films. Based on the X-ray diffraction results, thin films were successfully deposited at the temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and an oxygen partial pressure of 10mTorr. The dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties have then been characterized. It was found that the films deposited under lower oxygen pressure corresponded to lower leakage current. Magnetism measurement showed an induced ferromagnetism. The microstructures associated with. the magnetic and dielectric properties of this mixed-perovskite solid solutions were observed by transmission electron. microscopy, which revealed the existence of complicated ferroelectric domains, suggested that the weak spontaneous magnetization was closely associated with the decrease in the extent of rhombohedral distortion by a partial substitution of $BaTiO_3$ for $BiFeO_3$.

Multiferroic materials are of great interest because of its potential applications in the design of devices combining magnetic, electronic and optical functionalities. Among various multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3$(BFO) is known to be one of the intensively focused mainly due to the possibility of multiferroism at device working temperature (> $200^{\circ}C$). However, leakage current and weak polarization resulting from oxygen deficiency and crystalline defect should be resolved. Furthermore the magnetic ordering of pure BFO mainly prefers to have antiferromagnetic coupling. Up to now many attempts have been performed to improve the ferromagnetic and the ferroelectric properties of BFO by doping. In this work, we investigated the effects of Ni substitution on the multiferroism of bulk BFO. Four BFO samples (a pure BFO and three Ni-doped BFO's; $BiFe_{0.99}Ni_{0.01}O_3$, $BiFe_{0.98}Ni_{0.02}O_3$ and $BiFe_{0.97}Ni_{0.03}O_3$) were synthesized by the standard solid-state reaction and rapid sintering technique. The XRD results reveal that Ni atoms are substituted into Fe-sites and give rise to phase transition of cubic to rhombohedal. By using vibrating sample magnetometer and standard ferroelectric tester, the multiferroic properties at room temperature were characterized. We found that the magnetic moment of Ni-doped BFO turned out to be maximized for 3% of Ni dopant.

The effect of Ca-doping on the superconducting properties of Nd-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors, fabricated by the oxygen-controlled melt growth process, has been systematically investigated. Various c-axis textured bulk samples were grown using precursors with the nominal compositions of N $d_{1.8-x}$C $a_{x}$B $a_{2.4}$C $u_{3.4}$$O_{y}$ (x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) in a reduced oxygen atmosphere of 1% $O_2$ in Ar. Magnetization measurements revealed that the critical temperatures( $T_{c}$) were almost linearly depressed from 95K to 86K with increasing the Ca dopant from x = 0.0 to 0.15, respectively, and thus critical current densities( $J_{c}$) at 77K and for H//c-axis of specimens were gradually degraded with increasing x. Compositional analyses revealed that although the amounts of the Ca dopant both in NdB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{y}$(Nd123) and N $d_4$B $a_2$C $u_2$$O_{10}$(Nd422) were increased with increasing x, only less than half of the initial Ca compositions were detected in melt-grown Ca-doped Nd-Ba-Cu-O bulk crystals. The supression of $T_{c}$ is attributed to an increased Nd substitution for the Ba site in the Nd123 superconducting matrix with increasing the amount of the Ca dopant.t.opant.t.t.t.t.t.
$MgB_2$ bulk superconductors are synthesized by the solid state reaction of ($MgB_4$+xMg) precursors with excessive Mg compositions (x=1.0, 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4). The $MgB_4$ precursors are synthesized using (Mg+B) powders. The secondary phases ($MgB_4$ and MgO) present in the synthesized $MgB_4$ are removed by $HNO_3$ leaching. It is found that the formation reaction of $MgB_2$ is accelerated when Mg excessive compositions are used. The magnetization curves of $Mg_1+_xB_2$ samples show that the transition from the normal state to the superconducting state of the Mg excessive samples with x=0.5 and x=0.7 are sharper than that of $MgB_2$. The highest $J_c-B$ curve at 5 K and 20 K is achieved for x=0.5. Further addition of Mg decreases the $J_c$ owing to the formation of more pores in the $MgB_2$ matrix and smaller volume fraction of $MgB_2$.
