Low voltage circuit breakers are widely used in power distribution systems to interrupt fault current rapidly and to assure the reliability of the power supply. This paper is focused on understanding the interrupting capability, more specifically of the contacts and the arc runner, based on the shape of the contact system in the current molded case circuit breaker (hereafter MCCB). Moreover, in order to improve the interrupting capability of the circuit breaker, the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability, based on the 3-D magnetic flux analysis, were developed. Furthermore, this paper also presents results of the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability when applied to different model breakers. In addition, this paper analyzes the efficiency of the interrupting tests by forming false current paths consisting of a three-division cascade arc runner in the contact system. With regards to the interrupting test, there is a need to assure that the optimum design required to analyze the electromagnetic forces of the contact system generated by the current and flux density be present. Based on the results of this study, this paper presents both computational analysis and test results for the newly developed MCCB 460V/225A/50㎄ contact system.

Recently, as the demand of the information storage devices with large storage capacity such as BD(Blu-ray Disk) and HDTV(high-definition television) is increased, the optical storage devices are also required to have fast data transfer rate and large storage capacity. To satisfy these requirements, the actuator for optical disk drive should have high flexible mode frequencies for system stability. In this paper, we suggested a moving magnet type actuator having high flexible mode frequency. However, the moving magnet type actuator does not have sufficient driving sensitivities due to the weight of its moving part. To improve driving sensitivities, we designed the model with the closed electromagnetic circuit for tracking direction. In addition, driving sensitivities and flexible mode frequencies were improved by using DOE(Design of Experiments) for magnetic circuit and modifying the lens holder. Consequently, it is confirmed that the designed model is satisfied with the desired specifications.
Purpose : A method to estimate a real k-space trajectory based on a circuit model of the gradient system is proposed for spiral imaging. The estimated k-space trajectory instead of the ideal trajectory is used in the reconstruction to improve the image quality in the spiral imaging. Materials and Methods : Since the gradient system has self resistance, capacitance, and inductance, as well as the mutual inductance between the magnet and the gradient coils, the generated gradient fields have delays and transient responses compared to the input waveform to the gradient system. The real gradient fields and their trajectory in k-space play an important role in the reconstruction. In this paper, the gradient system is modeled with R-L-C circuits, and real gradient fields are estimated from the input to the model. An experimental method to determine the model parameters (R, L, C values) is also suggested from the quality of the reconstructed image. Results : The gradient fields are estimated from the circuit model of the gradient system at 1.5 Tesla MRI system. The spiral trajectory obtained by the integration of the estimated gradient fields is used for the reconstruction. From experiments, the reconstructed images using the estimated trajectory show improved uniformity, reduced overshoots near the edges, and enhanced resolutions compared to those using the ideal trajectory without model. Conclusion : The gradient system was successfully modeled by the R-L-C circuits. Much improved reconstruction was achieved in the spiral imaging using the trajectory estimated by the proposed model.

The position sensors used in a magnetic bearing system are desirable to provide some degree of fault-tolerance as the rotor position is necessary for the feedback control to overcome the open-loop instability. In this paper, we propose an inductive position sensor that can cope with a partial fault in the sensor. The sensor has multiple poles which can be combined to sense the in-plane motion of the rotor. When a high-frequency voltage signal drives each pole of the sensor, the resulting current in the sensor coil contains information regarding the rotor position. The signal processing circuit of the sensor extracts this position information. In this paper, we used the magnetic circuit model of the sensor that shows the analytical relationship between the sensor output and the rotor motion. The multi-polar structure of the sensor makes it possible to introduce redundancy which can be exploited for fault-tolerant operation. The proposed sensor is applied to a magnetically levitated turbo-molecular vacuum pump. Experimental results validate the fault-tolerance algorithm.

The high-velocity electromagnetic forming (EMF) process is based on the Lorentz force and the energy of the magnetic field. The advantages of EMF include improved formability, wrinkle reduction, and non-contact forming. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to determine the practical parameters for the EMF process. A 2-D axis-symmetric electromagnetic model was used, based on a spiral-type forming coil. In the numerical simulation, an RLC circuit was coupled to the spiral coil to measure various design parameters, such as the system input current and the electromagnetic force. The simulation results show that even though the input peak current levels were at the same level in each case, the forming condition varied due to differences in the frequency of the input current. Thus, the electromagnetic forming force was affected by the input current frequency, which in turn, determined the magnitude of the current density and the magnetic flux density.

It is becoming more significant to develop a rotary VCM type actuator for small form factor ODD, as portables are getting more and more popularized nowadays. In this paper, the procedure of development of the actuator which is applicable to compact flash II card and is fit in the specification of BD 1X is explained. This is based on the rotary VCM type actuator, which is good for reducing thickness. Air core solenoid coil is used in order to do focusing mechanism. And the total weight is reduced by using the structure of steel-aluminium-steel triple layer, so, the stiffness is still adequate. Additionally, the tracking coil is moved next to the actuator, so the total length was reduced, then the actuator become applicable to compact flash II card. The force of Magnetic Circuit is improved by using Magnetic Circuit DOE. And flexible mode frequency improved through the DOE of structure part. Modeling was exactly done in consideration of air core solenoid coil and pivot bearing. It is confirmed that the designed model is satisfied with the specification of BD 1X and is applicable to Compact Flash II card.

Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is a displacement sensor and is commonly used owing to its wide measurement range, excellent linearity, high sensitivity, and precision. To improve the output characteristics of LVDT, a few studies have been conducted to analyze the output using a theoretical method or a finite element method. However, the material properties of the core and the electromagnetic force acting on the core were not considered in the previous studies. In this study, a finite element analysis model was proposed considering the characteristics of the LVDT composed of coils, core, magnetic shell and electric circuit, and the core displacement. Using the proposed model, changes in sensitivity and linear region of LVDT according to changes in process and material parameters were analyzed. The outputs of the LVDT model were compared with those of the theoretical analysis, and then, the proposed analysis model was validated. When the electrical conductivity of the core was high and the relative magnetic permeability was low, the decrease in sensitivity was large. Additionally, an increase in the frequency of the power led to further decrease in sensitivity. The electromagnetic force applied on the core increased as the voltage increased, the frequency decreased, and the core displacement increased.
Recently, Gas Circuit Breakers are rapidly replacing Vacuum Circuit Breakers in the medium voltage switchgear. This is due to the improved performance of - GCB in interrupting capability, price, weight, size etc., while the countermeasure to suppress the switching surges of VCB has not been satisfactory. Intensive research works on the GCB have been conducted in the world widely since 1980. Nowadays it is well known that the thermal expansion type GCB can provide- better performance than puffer type in the distribution power system. KERI has conducted researches in the GCB rated at 25.8kV 25kA with Jinkwang Co. using the thermal expantion principle since 1993. In this paper, the calculated results of electric and magnetic fields for the model GCB are presented and analyzed. The effect of permanent magnet used to improve the interruption capabilty at the low current level is also investigated. The design parameters for the interrupter inspected through the short-circuit tests conducted at high power laboratory of KERI.

The rate of rise of the fault current in DC grids is very high compared to AC grids because of the low line impedance of DC lines. In AC grids the arc of the circuit breaker under current interruption is extinguished by the zero current crossing which is provided naturally by the system. In DC grids the zero current crossing must be provided by the circuit breaker itself. Unlike AC girds, the magnetic energy of DC grids is stored in the system inductance. The DC circuit breaker must dissipate the stored energy. In addition the DC breaker must withstand the residual overvoltage after the current interruption. The main contents of this paper are to ${\cdot}$ Explain the theoretical background for the design of DC circuit breaker. ${\cdot}$ Develop the simulation model in PSIM of the real scaled DC circuit breaker for 1,800V DC railway. ${\cdot}$ Suggest design guidelines for the DC circuit breaker based on the experimental work, simulations and design process.

This paper deals with the quench characteristic analysis in high-Tc superconducting synchronous motor of five to six hundred watts capacity. First, the magnetic field distribution and ac losses of high-Tc superconducting motor with the additive flux damper circuit was derived and computer simulation was performed with the equivalent model using FEM. The simulation results show that the quench state lasts for about 0.3 seconds.
