Dynamic heat capacity of perovskite manganites: calorimetric evidence for a first order transition and its implication to the magnetocaloric effect

  • Finding a solid material with a large value of the magnetocaloric effect near room temperature is of exceeding importance, since this would lead to the development of more compact and environmentally safer cooling systems. Recently, manganites become the focus of attention due to its large magnetocaloric effect. We demonstrate, via dynamic calorimetric measurements, that the large magnetocaloric effect in perovskite manganites stems from the first-order nature of the magnetic transition. Our results offer a clue in search for ideal magnetocaloric materials working in the vicinity of room temperature.

Magnetic and Structural Properties of MnBi1-xTix Alloys

  • $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ (x = 0, 0.4, 0.7, 1) alloys were prepared by arc-melting, followed by heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to measure and investigate the phase structure and magnetic properties. The temperature dependent magnetization curves indicate that the phase transitions between LTP and HTP MnBi occur with heating or cooling in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ ($x{\leq}0.7$) samples. However, MnTi samples are in $Mn_2Ti$ single-phase, with very low magnetic properties. Furthermore, the coercivity exhibits a positive temperature coefficient. The results show that the optimal content of Ti for the coercivity of $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloy is x = 0.4. For MnBi sample, the coercivity reaches a maximum value of 1.13 T at 550 K. However, the remanence and energy product show apparent decrease with the addition of Ti in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloys.

  • The new class of $Gd_5(Si_xGe_{1-x})_4$ compounds undergoes a simultaneous magnetic/structural phase transition giving a high level of strain that can be induced either by change in temperature or by application of a magnetic field. Profound changes of structural, magnetic, and electronic changes occur in the $Gd_5(Si_xGe_{1-x})_4$ system lead to extreme behavior of the material such as the giant magnetocaloric effect, colossal magnetostriction, and giant magnetoresistance. These unique material characters can be utilized for various applications including magnetic solid refrigerants, sensors, and actuators.

Molecular Dynamics in Paraelectric Phase of KH2PO4 Crystals Studied by Single Crystal NMR and MAS NMR

  • The temperature dependences of the NMR spectrum and the spin-lattice relaxation times in $KH_2PO_4$ were investigated via single-crystal NMR and MAS NMR. The stretched-exponential relaxation that occurred because of the distribution of correlation times was indicative of the degree of the distribution of the double-well potential on the hydrogen bond. The behaviors responsible for the strong temperature dependences of the $^1H$ and $^{31}P$ spin-lattice relaxation times in the rotating frame $T_{1{\rho}}$ in $KH_2PO_4$ are likely related to the reorientational motion of the hydrogen-bond geometry and the $PO_4$ tetrahedral distortion.

  • The magnetic properties and structure of FeRh thin film pitaxially grown onto MgO(001) substrate were studied by MPMS(Magnetic Properties Measure System) and in-situ temperature synchrotron XRD(X-ray Diffraction). The transition temperature of FeRh thin films was around 380K. Both M-T curve and d-spacing changes correspond to each other very closely.

The Magnetic Properties of Rapidly Quenched Yttrium-Palladium-Borocarbides Ribbon

  • We have studied the superconductivity of rapidly quenched $YPd_2B_2C$ ribbons. The superconductivity in bulk $YPd_2B_2C$ is completely suppressed by annealing as-cast ingots at hihger temperature, suggesting that the superconducting phase is metastable. The rapidly quenched sample, in the as-quenched state, shows the superconducting transition temperature of about 21 K. Form our magnetic data, the value for the upper critical field $H_c2$ (0) is estimated to be 10 T. The critical current density and the expected specific heat discontinuity $({\Delta}C/{\gamma}{T_c})$ were obtained to be about$10^8A/m^2$ at 10 Oe and 1.55, respectively.

Collapse of Charge Ordering in Ru-doped Mono-layered Manganites

  • The magnetic and transport properties far single crystals of Ru-doped mono-layered manganites $La_{0.5}Sr_{1.5}-Mn_{1-x}Ru_xO_4$ (0$\leq$$\chi$$\leq$0.1) have been studied using neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Temperature dependent magnetization data reveal that with an increase in the Ru concentration the parent charge ordered antiferromagnetic state is gradually destroyed and new ferromagnetic phase evolves. In the low Ru-doped system spin glass behavior is apparent in low temperature region, which is confirmed by ac and do magnetization measurements. The competing magnetic interaction between Mn/Mn and Mn/Ru couples is the most likely cause of the spin glass transition.

Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ 적색 형광체의 제조와 발광특성 (Luminescent Characteristics and Synthesis of Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ Red Phosphors)

  • In this study, Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors were synthesized at different temperatures using a solid state reaction method. The crystal structures, surface and optical properties of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. From XRD results, the crystal structure of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors was determined to be cubic. The maximum emission spectra were observed for the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphor prepared by annealing for 4h at 1,700 ℃. The 565~590 nm photoluminescent spectra of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors is associated with the 5D07F2 magnetic dipole transition of the Eu3+ ions. The intensity of the photoluminescent spectra in the red phosphors is more dominant for the magnetic dipole transition than the electric dipole transition with increasing annealing temperature. The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors prepared by 1,700 ℃ annealing temperature are X = 0.5994, Y = 0.3647.

다결정${(Fe,In,Eu)}_2O_3$계의 자기적 성질에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Magnetic Properties of Polycrystailine${(Fe,In,Eu)}_2O_3$)

  • 다결정${(Fe_{2}O_{3})}_{1-x-y}{(In_{2}O_{3})}_{x}{(Eu_{2}O_{3})}_{y}$(x=0.01, y=0.02과 x=0.02, y=0.03)의 자기적 성질을 X선 회절, $M\"{o}ssbauer$ 효과 방법과 자기이력 측정에 의해서 연구하였다. X선 회절결과는 이들 시료의 결정구조는 $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$와 같음을 보인다. 사중극자 분열과 평균 반폭치 분석으로부터 x=0.01과 y=0.02인 시료는 Morin 전이를 보이며, x=0.02와 y=0.03시료에서 반 강자성 벡타와 결정축[111]사이의 각은 온도의 증가에 따라 약 $35^{\circ}$로부터 (111) 평면에 놓이기 까지 변한다. 초미세 자기장의 온도 의존성은 스핀파 이론을 써서 분석하였다. 상온에서의 이성질체 이동값은 약 0.35mm/s로 이는 시료내의 철의 이온값은 $3^{+}$임을 의미하는 것이다. 이성질체 이동의 온도의존성은 Delbye모형을 써서 분석하였다.

Relationship between Carrier Concentration and Superconducting Transition Temperature in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Superconductor

  • 초산염(acetate)을 출발원료로 하여 $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3Oy$계 단일상 고온초전도체를 합성하려 하였으며 그 초전도상의 형성과정을 초전도전이온도 $T_c$ 및 전하나르게 농도와의 상관관계로부터 설명하고자 하였다. 초전도전이온도 $T_c$는 전기저항밀도 및 자화율을 측정하여 결정하였다. 시료로는 상기의 초전도체 출발조성물의 하소분말에 대해 $850^{\circ}C$, $860^{\circ}C$, 그리고 $870^{\circ}C$에서 40시간 동안 공기 중 열처리한 것을 이용하였다. 전하나르게농도는 홀계수를 측정하여 구하였다. 열처리과정 중의 초전도체 형성과정을 세라믹벌크내에 형성된 초전도체의 양 및 전하나르게농도 분포의 상관관계로부터 설명하였다.
