Measurement of Antioxidant Activities and Phenolic and Flavonoid Contents of the Brown Seaweed Sargassum horneri: Comparison of Supercritical CO2 and Various Solvent Extractions

  • Seaweed Sargassum horneri extracts were obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SC-CO_2$) and different solvents. $SC-CO_2$ was kept at a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 250 bar. The flow rate of $CO_2$ (27 g/min) was constant during the entire 2-h extraction period, and ethanol was used as a cosolvent. Six different solvents [acetone, hexane, methanol, ethanol, acetone mix methanol (7:3), and hexane mix ethanol (9:1)] were used for extraction and agitated by magnetic stirring (250 rpm) in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$ for 20 h; the ratio of material to solvent was 1:10 (w/v). Antioxidant properties of S. horneri extracted using $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol and different solvents have shown good activity. The highest activity belongs to $SC-CO_2$ with ethanol extracted oil, showing DPPH, ABTS, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid levels of $68.38{\pm}1.21%$, $83.51{\pm}1.25%$, $0.64{\pm}0.02mg/g$, and $5.57{\pm}0.05mg/g$, respectively. The S. horneri extracts showed a significant correlation between the antioxidant activity and phenolic content. Based on these results, the $SC-CO_2$ extract (ethanol) of the seaweed extract from brown seaweed may be a valuable antioxidant source.

Evaporation Pressure Drop of Carbon Dioxide in Horizontal Tubes with Inner Diameter of 4.57 mm and 7.75 mm (내경 4.57과 7.75 mm인 수평관내 이산화탄소의 증발 압력강하)

  • The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ (R-744) in horizontal tubes was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of 7.75 and 4.57 mm inner diameter. The experiments were conducted at saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C\;to\;5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to $40kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The pressure drop measured during the evaporation process of $CO_2$ increases with increased mass flux, and decreases as the saturation temperature increased. The evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ is very lower than that of R-22. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, the best fit of the present experimental data is obtained with the correlation of Choi et al. But existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$. Therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • Cortex Phellodendri (CP) is derived from the dried bark of Phellodendron amurense. It has been widely used as a drug in traditional Korea medicine for treating diarrhea, jaundice, swelling pains in the knees and feet, urinary tract infections and infections of the body surface. In this study, preparative centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) was successfully carried out to separate antibacterial compounds from a CP methanol extract. The optimum two-phase CPC solvent system was composed of n-butanol: acetic acid: water (4:1:5 v/v/v). The flow rate of the mobile phase was 3 $m{\ell}/min$ in ascending mode with rotation at 1,000 rpm. The CPC-separated fraction and purification procedures were carried out by preparatory HPLC. Palmatine weas identified by $^1H$, $^{13}C$-nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopy spectral data analysis.

Spectroscopic Evidence of the Autoxidation Products Derived from Methyl Linolenate (Methyl Linolenate의 산화생성물(酸化生成物)에 대(對)한 분광학적(分光學的) 연구(硏究))

  • The autoxidation products derived from methyl linolenate are isolated and characterized by using thin-layer chromatography, infrared, ultraviolet and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometries. In addition, the propriety of the application of NMR spectrometry to the analysis of the autoxidation products is examined. Spectroscopic data indicate that the autoxidation of methyl linolenate produces hydroperoxides and trans, cis-substituted diene. The autoxidation products have a predominant cis, trans-conjugated diene system with some trans, trans-configuration. The spectroscopic data of ir, uv, and nmr are very consistent with each other, and further investigation of the multiplet region at $5.83{\sim}6.60ppm$ would be very helpful for the structural elucidation of the autoxidation products.

  • We have investigated the mixed-state magnetoresistance of high quality c-axis-oriented MgB2 thin film for magnetic field from 0.5 T to 5.0 T, applied normal to ab-plane. The temperature dependence of magnetoresistance was well described by vortex glass and fluctuation theories for different temperature regimes. We observed glassy exponent of v(z-1)~3 and upper critical field of $H_{c2}$(0)~35 T, which is consistent with previous data obtained from direct $H_{c2}$(0) measurements. Interestingly, the thermally activated flux flow region was observed to be very narrow, suggesting that the pinning strength of this compound is very strong. This finding is closely related to the recent reports that the bulk pinning is dominant in $MgB_2$and the critical current density of $MgB_2$ thin film is very high, comparable to that of cuprate superconductor. The present results further suggest that $MgB_2$is beneficial to technical applications.ons.

A Case of Budd-Chiari Syndrome Which Shows Space Occupying Lesion on Liver Scan (간 스캔상 공간점유병소의 소견을 보인 Budd-Chiari증후군 - 1예 보고 -)

  • A twenty-one-year-old man visited our hospital due to abdominal distension for a month. On the physical examination, there was severe abdominal distension with fluctuation and shifting dullness. The routine laboratory results were within normal range. On the Magnetic Resonace angiography, there wasn't any blood flow within the right and middle hepatic vein. So we concluded that the etiologic disease was Budd-Chiari syndrome. On the liver scan, there was cold area(absence of radiouptake) on entire right lobe of the liver, increased uptake on the bone marrow and showed splenomegaly. This finding was similar to the liver mass occupying right lobe with underlying chronic liver disease. On the previous reports, it is quite uncommon finding that Budd-Chirari syndrome shows lesion like space occupying one on the liver scan. So we report this case with a review of the literature.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based mount (MR mount in short) which can be applicable to vibration control of diesel engine of ship. In this work, a mixed - mode including squeeze mode, flow mode and shear mode is proposed and designed. In order to determine actuating damping force of MR mount required for efficient vibration control, excitation force from diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of V-type engine is considered and the relationship between velocity and pressure of gas in torque of the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force an appropriate size of MR mount is designed. In addition, in order to achieve maximum actuating force with geometric constraints design optimization is undertaken using ANSYS software. Through the magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.

  • In a pressurized water reactor, radioactive corrosion products (CRUD) in primary coolant system are one of the major sources for the occupational radiation exposure of the personnel in a nuclear power plant. Through the recent trend of long term fuel cycle in a nuclear power plant, radioactive corrosion products deposited in reactor core for a long time are also the cause of Axial Offset Anomaly (AOA) having an effect on reactor power by the hideout of boron. CRUD consist primarily of magnetite, nickel ferrite, cobalt ferrite, and so on. They have the characteristic of strong magnetism. Therefore it is peformed the conceptual design to develop the filter which removes the CRUD by magnetic field that is generated by an arrangement of permanent and electric magnets. Contrary to the conventional filter, the proposed filter does not interrupt the fluid flow, so there is little pressure drop and it can be used continuously. It is expected to be applied as one of the technologies for removal of the CRUD.

The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 7.75 mm, and length of 5 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 500 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$ to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 40 $kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. In comparison with teat results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

Effect of refrigeration lubricants on the heat transfer performance in the microfin tube evaporator (마이크로핀관 증발기내 전열 성능에 미치는 냉동기유의 영향)

  • The present study experimentally investigated the effect of refrigeration lubricant on the heat transfer performance in the straight sections and U-bend of a microfin tube evaporator by using R-22/mineral oil and R-407C/POE oil. The apparatus consisted of test section with U-bend, preheater, condenser, oil injection and sampling devices, magnetic pump, mass flow meter etc. The experimental parameters were oil concentration of 0 to 5 wt%, inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.5, mass flux of 219 and $400kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of 10 and $20kW/m^2$. The effects of parameters on the heat transfer coefficients were large in the order of inlet quality, mass flux and heat flux as oil concentration got increased. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficients were continuously decreased for R-22 and increased by 3% up to the concentration of 1% and then decreased for R-407C under the condition of large inlet quality, and small mass flux and heat flux. But, the heat transfer coefficients were increased up to the concentration of 3% and then decreased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants under the opposite conditions. The variation of enhancement factors for R-407C was under 50% of that for R-22 and the variation with respect to the positions in the test section was small. The pressure drops were increased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants as oil concentration was increased. The pressure drops for R-407C were smaller by the maximum of 18% than those for R-22.
