  • This paper describes an optimal design method which is applied a weighted least square (WLS) method for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. An optimal design approach is presented for a homogeneity superconducting magnet with the superconducting active shield especially for a magnetic resonance imaging system. The WLS is used to obtain the optimal configurations using the least amount and minimum volume of conductor, exhibiting the smallest level of field inhomogeneity and resulting in the least level of stray field. The proposed model is used to design a multiple-shield configuration for a 1.5 T MRI magnet. The field homogeneity is required less than 5 gauss stray field contour within 4m axially and 3m radially from origin. The designed magnet with the actively magnetic shielding coil out of main coils is analyzed by FEM and theoretical analysis method, investigated the field homogeneity.

  • This paper presents a design methodology of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. The magnet consists of several double pancake coils with a variety of wire width. This technique, named Multi-Width, is well known to make efficient use of the superconducting wire. It is common for design of high-temperature superconducting magnets to not only reduce wire consumption used, but also consider the homogeneity of the magnetic field. In this paper, we study a design method that efficiently reduces wire usage while considering magnetic field homogeneity. The design is carried out by calculating the critical current and the critical magnetic field according to the configuration of arranging the thickness of the wire to determine the number of windings. The width of wire comprising the magnet was set to 4 - 12 mm, and the number of double pancake coils was set to an even number to consist of top-down symmetry. To verify the validity of the design, we compared the progress of the design code with a complete enumeration survey. As a case study, we designed a magnet that generates a central magnetic field of 3 T or more in a 240 mm bore in diameter. Optimality can be evaluated by weighing wire consumption and field homogeneity according to the magnet's use or user preference.

  • In this article, an analytical solution of the dynamical behavior in an orthotropic non-homogeneity elastic material using for elastodynamics equations is investigated. The effects of the magnetic field, the initial stress, and the non-homogeneity on the radial displacement and the corresponding stresses in an orthotropic material are investigated. The analytical solution for the elastodynamic equations has solved regarding displacements. The variation of the stresses, the displacement, and the perturbation magnetic field have shown graphically. Comparisons are made with the previous results in the absence of the magnetic field, the initial stress, and the non-homogeneity. The present study has engineering applications in the fields of geophysical physics, structural elements, plasma physics, and the corresponding measurement techniques of magneto-elasticity.

  • The present investigation is concerned with a study effect of magnetic field and non-homogenous on the elastic stresses in rotating orthotropic infinite circular cylinder. A certain boundary conditions closed form stress fields solutions are obtained for rotating orthotropic cylinder under initial magnetic field with constant thickness for three cases: (1) Solid cylinder, (2) Cylinder with a circular hole at the center, (3) Cylinder mounted on a circular rigid shaft. Analytical expressions for the components of the displacement and stress fields in different cases are obtained. The effect of rotation and magnetic field and non-homogeneity on the displacement and stress fields are studied. Numerical results are illustrated graphically for each case. The effects of rotating and magnetic field and non-homogeneity are discussed.

  • We design a crisscrossed double-layer birdcage (DLBC) coil by modifying the coil geometry of a standard single-layer BC (SLBC) coil to enhance the homogeneity of transmitting magnetic flux density ($B_1{^+}$) along the main magnetic field ($B_0$)-direction for small-animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 300 MHz. The performance assessment of the crisscrossed DLBC coil is conducted by computational analysis with the finite-difference time domain method (FDTD) and compared with SLBC coil in terms of the $B_1$ and the $B_1{^+}$ distribution. As per the computational calculation studies, the mean value in the two-dimensional $B_1{^+}$ map obtained at the mid-axial slice with the proposed DLBC coil is slightly lower than that obtained with the SLBC coil, but the $B_1{^+}$ value of the DLBC coil in the outermost plane (40 mm away from the central plane) shows improvements of 19.3% and 24.8% over the SLBC coil $B_1{^+}$ value when simulating a spherical phantom and realistic mouse body modeling. These simulation results indicate that, the $B_1{^+}$ homogeneity along the z-direction was improved by using DLBC configuration. Our approach enables $B_1{^+}$ homogeneity improvement along the zdirection, and it can also be applied to ultra-high field (UHF) MRI systems.

  • In this work, an analytical solution is provided for the dynamical response of an orthotropic non-homogeneous elastic material. The present study has engineering applications in the fields of geophysical physics, structural elements, plasma physics, and the corresponding measurement techniques of magneto-elasticity. The analytical performances for the elastodynamic equations has been solved regarding displacements. The influences of the rotation, the magnetic field, the non-homogeneity based radial displacement and the corresponding stresses in an orthotropic material are investigated. The variations of the stresses, the displacement, and the perturbation magnetic field have been illustrated. The comparisons is performed using the previous solutions in the magnetic field absence, the non-homogeneity and the rotation.

  • Shimming, active and/or passive, is indispensable for most MR (magnetic resonance) magnets where homogeneous magnetic fields are required within target spaces. Generally, shimming consists of two steps, field mapping and correcting of fields, and they are recursively repeated until the target field homogeneity is reached. Thus, accuracy of the field mapping is crucial for fast and efficient shimming of MR magnets. For an accurate shimming, a "magnetic" center, which is a mathematical origin for harmonic analysis, must be carefully defined, Although the magnetic center is in general identical to the physical center of a magnet, it is not rare that both centers are different particularly in HTS (high temperature superconducting) magnets of which harmonic field errors, especially high orders, are significantly dependent on a location of the magnetic center. This paper presents a new algorithm, based on a field mapping theory with harmonic analysis, to define the best magnetic center of an MR magnet in terms of minimization of pre-shimming field errors. And the proposed algorithm is tested with simulation under gaussian noise environment.

  • Due to large in-field current carrying capacity and strong mechanical strength, a REBCO wire has been regarded as a viable high temperature superconductor (HTS) option for high field MRI and > 1 GHz (>23.5 T) NMR magnets. However, a REBCO magnet is well known to have an inherent problem of field inhomogeneity, so-called 'Screening Current induced magnetic Field (SCF)'. Recently, 'field shaking' and 'current overshoot operation' techniques have been successfully demonstrated to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity by experiments. To investigate the effectiveness of current overshooting operation technique, a numerical simulation is conducted for a test REBCO magnet composed of a stack of double pancake coils using '2D edge-element magnetic field formulation' combined with 'domain homogenization' scheme. The simulation result demonstrates that an appropriate amount of current overshoot can negate the SCF. To verify the simulation results, current overshoot experiments are conducted for the REBCO magnet in liquid nitrogen. Experimental results also demonstrate the possible application of current overshoot technique to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity.
