A magnetic cataclysmic variable has a rotating magnetic white dwarf which accretes matter from its late type companion. Kim & Beuermann (1995) presented a phenomenological model of the accretion from its surrounding structure e.g., a disk into the magnetosphere of the white dwarf, and presented results for the spin modulated X-ray spectrum and light curves. Using this model, we calculate the optical continuum and line emission which result from reprocessing of X-rays in the accretion stream within the magnetosphere. Penning (1985) suggested the observed spin-modulated radial-velocity variations might result from reprocession of X-rays in the disk. We, however, find the radiation can be originated from the magnetosphere accretion stream. We use the same geometrical model to calculate the optical and the X-ray behaviour. The results from the two wavelength bands are internally consistent. We conclude that this approach will increase the diagnostic accuracies of the results.

In this study, the electromagnetic characteristic of a flat-type two-dimensional proportional solenoid were analyzed by the magnetic reluctance method. The magnetic equivalent circuit equation for the solenoid was derived by modeling the reluctance of air gaps and magnetic structural components such as pole core, armature and yoke. It was solved iteratively because of the nonlinear magnetization properties of iron parts. The solutions showed good agreement with experimental data. Based on the magnetic equivalent circuit equation, the influence of design parameters on force-to-armature displacement curves was mathematically derived and experimentally verified. In this way, dominant design parameters could be analytically determined.
This paper formulates the principle of the permanent magnetic actuator (PMA) and its dynamic characteristic calculation. Some results of the calculation and analysis of the dynamic curves are presented. Due to its great advantages, PMA that presented recently drew great attention from engineers all over the world. We present the magnetic field and actuator using finite element method associated to parameter calculating the displacement of the moving parts and the supplying current when the actuator is DC voltage supplied or capacitor supplied. In this paper, We will do compare of dynamic behavior between DC voltage supplied and capacitor discharge supplied.
Magnetic viscosities of a commercialized metal evaporated tape were measured as a function of sweeping rate in VSM at room temperature. Within several seconds in the viscosity measurement, curves are downward concave and more concave with increasing sweeping rate when magnetization were plotted as a logarithmic function of time. However, magnetization varied as a logarithmic function of time after several seconds. Magetic viscosity coefficient gradually increased with increasing sweeping rate and then kept a constant value at a rate faster than 61.5 Oe/s. It was supposed that magnetic viscosity occurs during field sweeping, which was in good agreement with Sharrock's model qualitatively. Activation volume decreased with increasing sweeping rate, which was due to the fact that magnetic viscosity coefficients increased with sweeping rate while irreversible susceptibilities were not affected by sweeping rate.
An experimental design of magnetic amplifiers and their characteristics in steady state are presented. A saturable reactor model having 2KVA capacity was designed, using Z-10 grain-oriented silicon steel which is commonly used in power transformers. Experimental and theoretical analysis show that the experimental results are in good agreement with the equal ampere-turns law. In addition to the saturable reactor, the self-saturated magnetic amplifiers of 0.4VA and 5VA capacity, using 50% Ni-Fe alloy cores having rectangular hysteresis loops were designed. Control characteristic curves of these amplifiers show high ampere-turn gain enough to be used for voltage controllers under load and non-contact magnetic switches of the rated capacity.

Quench characteristics of HTS cable conductor due to external magnetic field were investigated. Firstly, the influence of critical characteristics of HTS tape on locally applied magnetic field was examined. Secondly, critical current of HTS tapes, which are wound on surface of former, were measured respectively, before the experiment for quench characteristics, Finally, 50mT and 100mT were applied to HTS cable conductor and quench characteristics were investigated through V-I curves. As the results, same as the result of HTS tape, HTS cable conductor showed strong dependence on external magnetic field with direction and magnitude.
The magnetic susceptibilities of molybdenum ions with 4d1 electronic configuration in the octahedral crystal field were calculated on the basis of ligand field theory. The experimental magnetic susceptibilities for molybdenum ions, which are stabilized at the octahedral site in the perovskite lattice of Ba2ScMoⅤO6 and Sr2YMoⅤO6, were compared with the theoretical ones. We have tried to fit their temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility with ligand field parameters, spin-orbit coupling constant ζSO, and orbital reduction parameter κ according to intermediate field coupling and strong field theory. Strong field coupling theory could not explain experimental curves without unrealistically large axial ligand field, since it ignores the mixing up between different state via spin-orbit interaction and ligand field. On the other hand, the intermediate field coupling theory could successfully reproduce experimental data in octahedral and trigonal ligand field. The fitting result demonstrates not only the fact that spin-orbit interaction is primarily responsible for the variation of magnetic behavior but also the fact that effective orbital overlap, enhanced by cubic crystal structure, reduces significantly orbital angular momentum as indicated by κ parameter.
We use the outer gap model to explain the spectrum and the energy dependent light curves of the X-ray and soft ${\gamma}$-ray radiations of the spin-down powered pulsar PSR B1509-58. In the outer gap model, most pairs inside the gap are created around the null charge surface and the gap's electric field separates the opposite charges to move in opposite directions. Consequently, the region from the null charge surface to the light cylinder is dominated by the outflow current and that from the null charge surface to the star is dominated by the inflow current. We suggest that the viewing angle of PSR B1509-58 only receives the inflow radiation. The incoming curvature photons are converted to pairs by the strong magnetic field of the star. The X-rays and soft ${\gamma}$-rays of PSR B1509-58 result from the synchrotron radiation of these pairs. The magnetic pair creation requires a large pitch angle, which makes the pulse profile of the synchrotron radiation distinct from that of the curvature radiation. We carefully trace the pulse profiles of the synchrotron radiation with different pitch angles. We find that the differences between the light curves of different energy bands are due to the different pitch angles of the secondary pairs, and the second peak appearing at E > 10 MeV comes from the region near the star, where the stronger magnetic field allows the pair creation to happen with a smaller pitch angle.
We have calculated and analyzed the electromagnetic responses of buried conductive pipes due to a horizontal magnetic dipole source on the pound using a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method to provide useful guidelines for designing electromagnetic pipe locator and for field operation of the system. For single buried pipe, the horizontal component and the horizontal difference of the vertical component of magnetic field show peaks above the pipe. When comparing the width of response curves of both cases around the peak, horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field shows much narrower peak, 2 times narrower at a half of maximum amplitude, than that of horizontal component of magnetic field. Accordingly, we can pinpoint the horizontal location of pipe on the ground more accurately by measuring the horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic fold. Moreover, it will have a merit in determining the depth of pipe, because the equation for depth estimation is defined just above the pipe. When there are two buried pipes separated by two meters with each other, the response of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field has two separate peaks each of which is located above the pipe whereas horizontal magnetic field response has only one peak above the pipe just below the transmitter. Thus, when there exist more than a buried pipe, measuring the horizontal difference of vertical magnetic field can effectively detect not only the pipe under transmitter but also adjacent ones. The width of response curves also indicates higher resolving ability of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field.

We fabricated MHOS (multi-HTS layers on one substrate) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) REBCO conductors using HTS REBCO coated conductor (CC) A-specimen, which induces an artificial magnetic flux pinning effect, and HTS REBCO CC B-specimen, that does not induce this effect. The superconducting magnetic properties of the fabricated MHOS conductors were examined by measuring their magnetic moment m(H) curves using a physical property measurement system (QD PPMS-14). The critical current density (Jc) characteristics of our four-layered MHOS HTS REBCO conductor specimens such as BAAB, BBBB, and AAAA were lower than those of their two-layered and three-layered counterparts. At a temperature T of 30 K the magnetic flux pinning physical indicator δ values (obtained from the relationship Jc ∝ H-δ) of the three-layer ABA (δ = 0.35) and two-layer AB (δ = 0.43) specimens were found to be significantly lower than those of the four-layer ABBA (δ = 0.51), BAAB (δ = 0.60), AAAA (δ = 0.78) and BBBB (δ = 0.81) structures.
