We have investigated a coronal jet observed near the limb on 2010 June 27 by the Hinode/X-Ray Telescope (XRT), EUV Imaging Spectrograph (EIS), and Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), and the SDO/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), and on the disk by STEREO-A/EUVI. From EUV (AIA and EIS) and soft X-ray (XRT) images we have identified both cool and hot jets. There was a small loop eruption in Ca II images of the SOT before the jet eruption. Using high temporal and multi wavelength AIA images, we found that the hot jet preceded its associated cool jet by about 2 minutes. The cool jet showed helical-like structures during the rising period. According to the spectroscopic analysis, the jet's emission changed from blue to red shift with time, implying helical motions in the jet. The STEREO observation, which enabled us to observe the jet projected against the disk, showed that there was a dim loop associated with the jet. We have measured a propagation speed of ~800 km/s for the dimming front. This is comparable to the Alfven speed in the loop computed from a magnetic field extrapolation of the HMI photospheric field measured 5 days earlier and the loop densities obtained from EIS Fe XIV line ratios. We interpret the dimming as indicating the presence of Alfvenic waves initiated by reconnection in the upper chromosphere.

X-ray plasma ejections often occurred around the impulsive phases of solar flares and have been well observed by the SXT aboard Yohkoh. Though the X-ray plasma ejections show various morphological shapes, there has been no attempt at classifying the morphological groups for a large sample of the X-ray plasma ejections. In this study, we have classified 137 X-ray plasma ejections according to their shape for the first time. Our classification criteria are as follows: (1) a loop type shows ejecting plasma with the shape of loops, (2) a spray type has a continuous stream of plasma without showing any typical shape, (3) a jet type shows collimated motions of plasma, (4) a confined ejection shows limited motions of plasma near a flaring site. As a result, we classified the flare-associated X-ray plasma ejections into five groups as follows: loop-type (60 events), spray-type (40 events), jet-type (11 events), confined ejection (18 events), and others (8 events). As an illustration, we presented time sequence images of several typical events to discuss their morphological characteristics, speed, CME association, and magnetic field configuration. We found that the jet-type events tend to have higher speeds and better association with CMEs than those of the loop-type events. It is also found that the CME association (11/11) of the jet-type events is much higher than that (5/18) of the confined ejections. These facts imply that the physical characteristics of the X-ray plasma ejections are closely associated with magnetic field configurations near the reconnection regions.

It has been a big mystery what drives filament eruptions and flares. We have studied in detail an X1.8 flare and its associated filament eruption that occurred in NOAA Active Region 9236 on November 24,2000. For this work we have analyzed high temporal (about 1 minute) and spatial (about 1 arcsec) resolution images taken by Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, Hoc centerline and blue wing ($-0.6{\AA}$) images from Big Bear Solar Observatory, and 1600 ${\AA}$ UV images by the Transition Region and Corona Explorer (TRACE). We have found that there were several transient brightenings seen in H$\alpha$ and, more noticeably in TRACE 1600 ${\AA}$ images around the preflare phase. A closer look at the UV brightenings in 1600 ${\AA}$ images reveals that they took place near one end of the erupting filament, and are a kind of jets supplying mass into the transient loops seen in 1600 ${\AA}$. These brightenings were also associated with canceling magnetic features (CMFs) as seen in the MDI magnetograms. The flux variations of these CMFs suggest that the flux cancellation may have been driven by the emergence of the new flux. For this event, we have estimated the ejection speeds of the filament ranging from 10 to 160 km $s^{-1}$ for the first twenty minutes. It is noted that the initiation of the filament eruption (as defined by the rise speed less than 20 km $s^{-1}$) coincided with the preflare activity characterized by UV brightenings and CMFs. The speed of the associated LASCO CME can be well extrapolated from the observed filament speed and its direction is consistent with those of the disturbed UV loops associated with the preflare activity. Supposing the H$\alpha$/UV transient brightenings and the canceling magnetic features are due to magnetic reconnect ion in the low atmosphere, our results may be strong observational evidence supporting that the initiation of the filament eruption and the preflare phase of the associated flare may be physically related to low-atmosphere magnetic reconnection.
Triplets of identical cubesats will be built to carry out the following scientific objectives: i) multi-observations of ionospheric ENA (Energetic Neutral Atom) imaging, ii) ionospheric signature of suprathermal electrons and ions associated with auroral acceleration as well as electron microbursts, and iii) complementary measurements of magnetic fields for particle data. Each satellite, a cubesat for ion, neutral, electron, and magnetic fields (CINEMA), is equipped with a suprathermal electron, ion, neutral (STEIN) instrument and a 3-axis magnetometer of magnetoresistive sensors. TRIO is developed by three institutes: i) two CINEMA by Kyung Hee University (KHU) under the WCU program, ii) one CINEMA by UC Berkeley under the NSF support, and iii) three magnetometers by Imperial College, respectively. Multi-spacecraft observations in the STEIN instruments will provide i) stereo ENA imaging with a wide angle in local times, which are sensitive to the evolution of ring current phase space distributions, ii) suprathermal electron measurements with narrow spacings, which reveal the differential signature of accelerated electrons driven by Alfven waves and/or double layer formation in the ionosphere between the acceleration region and the aurora, and iii) suprathermal ion precipitation when the storm-time ring current appears. In addition, multi-spacecraft magnetic field measurements in low earth orbits will allow the tracking of the phase fronts of ULF waves, FTEs, and quasi-periodic reconnection events between ground-based magnetometer data and upstream satellite data.
We have investigated a coronal jet near the limb on 2010 June 27 by Hinode/X-Ray Telescope (XRT), EUV Imaging Spectrograph (EIS), Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), SDO/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), and STEREO. From EUV (AIA and EIS) and soft X-ray (XRT) images we identify the erupting jet feature in cool and hot temperatures. It is noted that there was a small loop eruption in Ca II images of the SOT before the jet eruption. Using high temporal and multi wavelength AIA images, we found that the hot jet preceded its associated cool jet. The jet also shows helical-like structures during the rising period. According to the spectroscopic analysis, the jet structure changes from blue shift to red one with time, implying the helical structure of the jet. The STEREO observation, which enables us to observe this jet on the disk, shows that there was a dim loop associated with the jet. Comparing the observations from the AIA and STEREO, the dim loop corresponds to the jet structure which implies the heated loop. Considering that the structure of its associated active region seen in STEREO is similar to that in AIA observed 5 days before, we compared the jet morphology on the limb with the magnetic fields extrapolated from a HMI vector magnetogram observed on the disk. Interestingly, the comparison shows that the open field corresponds to the jet which is seen as the dim loop in STEREO. Our observations (XRT, SDO, SOT, and STEREO) are well consistent with the numerical simulation of the emerging flux reconnection model.
We observed an Ellerman bomb(EB) and its associated surge using the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph(FISS) and the broadband TiO filter of the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. As is well-known, the EB appears as a feature that is very bright at the far wings of the H alpha line. The lambdameter method applied to these wings indicates that the EB is blue-shifted up to 6km/s in velocity. In the photospheric level below the EB, we see rapidly growing "granule-like" feature. The transverse velocity of the dark lane at the edge of the "granule" increased with time as reached a peak of 6km/s, at the time of the EB's occurrence. The surge was seen in absorption and varied rapidly both in the H alpha and the Ca II 8542 line. It originated from the Ellerman bomb, and was impulsively accelerated to 20km/s toward us(blueshift). Then the velocity of the surge gradually changed from blueshift of 20km/s to redshift of 40km/s. By adopting the cloud model, we estimated the temperature of the surge material at about 27000K and the non-thermal velocity at about 10km/s. Our results shed light on the conventional idea that an EB results from the magnetic reconnection of an emerging flux tube and pre-existing field line.
We investigate a cool loop and a dark lane over a limb active region on 2007 March 14 by the Hinode/EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS). The cool loop is clearly seen in the EIS spectral lines formed at the transition region temperature (log T = 5.8). The dark lane is characterized by an elongated faint structure in coronal spectral lines (log T = 5.8 - 6.1) and rooted on a bright point. We examine their electron densities, Doppler velocities, and non-thermal velocities as a function of distance from the limb using the spectral lines formed at different temperatures (log T = 5.4 - 6.4). The electron densities of the cool loop and the dark lane are derived from the density sensitive line pairs of Mg VII, Fe XII, and Fe XIV spectra. Under the hydrostatic equilibrium and isothermal assumption, we determine their temperatures from the density scale height. Comparing the scale height temperatures to the peak formation temperatures of the spectral lines, we note that the scale height temperature of the cool loop is consistent with a peak formation temperature of the Mg VII (log T = 5.8) and the scale height temperature of the dark lane is close to a peak formation temperature of the Fe XII and Fe XIII (log T = 6.1 - 6.2). It is interesting to note that the structures of the cool loop and the dark lane are most visible in these temperature lines. While the non-thermal velocity in the cool loop slightly decreases (less than 7 km $s^{-1}$) along the loop, that in the dark lane sharply falls off with height. The variation of non-thermal velocity with height in the cool loop and the dark lane is contrast to that in off-limb polar coronal holes which are considered as source of the fast solar wind. Such a decrease in the non-thermal velocity may be explained by wave damping near the solar surface or turbulence due to magnetic reconnection near the bright point.

We apply a non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model to a supra-arcade plasma sheet, shocked plasma, and current sheet. The model assumes that the plasma is initially in ionization equilibrium at low temperature, and it is heated rapidly by a shock or magnetic reconnection. The model presents the temperature and characteristic timescale responses of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamic Observatory and X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board Hinode. We compare the model ratios of the responses between different passbands with the observed ratios of a supra-arcade plasma sheet on 2012 January 27. We find that most of observations are able to be described by using a combination of temperatures in equilibrium and the plasma closer to the arcade may be close to equilibrium ionization. We also utilize the set of responses to estimate the temperature and density for shocked plasma associated with a coronal mass ejection on 2010 June 13. The temperature, density, and the line of sight depth ranges we obtain are in reasonable agreement with previous works. However, a detailed model of the spherical shock is needed to fit the observations. We also compare the model ratios with the observations of a current sheet feature on 2017 September 10. The long extended current sheet above the solar limb makes it easy to analyze the sheet without background corona. We find that the sheet feature is far from equilibrium ionization while the background plasma is close to equilibrium. We discuss our results with the previous studies assuming equilibrium ionization.
