  • Ribbon type nanocrystalline alloy cores have shown excellent soft magnetic properties in the high frequency range because of small crystalline anisotropy and nearly zero magnetostriction[1]. In present, however ribbon alloys gives some limit in applications such as a large inductor and reactors of PFC circuit, which are required good DC bias property and low loss in the high frequency. Powder alloys with ultra fine grain structure can be an important way to overcome this kind of disadvantage, and to improve the high frequency soft magnetic properties in conventional metallic powder cores[2]. • The unique nano-scale inter-lamellar microstructure and unparalleled heat treatment process give our developed metal powder composite its outstanding magnetic property for power inductor & motor applications. Compared to the conventional polycrystalline Fe or amorphous Fe-Cr-Si-B alloys, our unique designed inter-lamellar microstructure strongly decreases the intra-particle eddy current loss at high frequencies by blocking the mutual eddy currents. The combination of optimum permeability, magnetic flux and extremely low core loss makes this powder composite suitable for high frequency applications well above 10 MHz. Moreover, it can be also possible to SMC core for high speed motor applications in order to increase the motor efficiency by decreasing the core loss.

  • In order to improve the remanence of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets, we investigated the influence of compaction conditions such as packing density, applied field and green density on the magnetic properties. While the remanence decreased with increasing the packing density and green density, it increased with the increase of the applied field. In addition, XRD analysis revealed that the remanence was enhanced as the degree of powder alignment was improved. The green density was more influential on the remanence than the packing density and applied field.

  • Soft magnetic composite (SMC) material has recently received a significant attention in the area of high-speed machines because of its unique properties such as good design flexibility and low eddy current loss. However, SMC's electromagnetic property is poor compared to silicon steel in terms of saturation, relative permeability, and hysteresis loss. This paper presents a technique for utilization of SMC in two strategic designs of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) depending on a loss pattern. To investigate the effect of SMC's merits and demerits, the stator material is changed from laminated steel to SMC.

  • N-Type $SbI_3$-doped $95%{Bi_2}{Te_3}-5%{Bi_2}{Se_3}$ compounds were prepared by a gas atomization and Magnetic Pulsed Compaction process. The dynamic recrystallization and thermoelectric properties of the MPCed bulks with consolidation temperatures and times were investigated by a combination of microscopy, XRD and thermoelectric property testing. The microstructure of MPCed bulk shows homogeneous and fine distribution through consolidated bulks due to dynamic recrystallization during hot MPC. This research presented the challenges toward the successful consolidation of thermoelectric powder using magnetic pulsed compaction (MPC).

  • This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR (magneto-rheological) mount experimentally. Since damping property of the MR fluid is changed by variation of the applied magnetic field strength, squeeze mode type MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field strength. In the present work, the performance of the mount was experimentally Investigated according to the magnetic field strength and exciting frequencies. The experimental results present that the MR mount can effectively reduce the vibration in a wide range of frequency by controlling the applied electromagnetic field strength. Viscous damping and stiffness coefficients of the MR mount tend to be changed according to the variation of the applied currents in this study and MR effect is reduced by increasing exciting frequency.

  • A magnetic film was deposited on a slide glass substrate from aqueous solutions of $FeCl_2$ and $NaNO_2$ at 363 K. XRD analysis showed that the film was polycrystalline magnetite $(Fe_{3(1-{\sigma})}O_4)$ without impurity phase. The lattice constant was 0.8390 nm. Mossbauer spectrum of the film could be deconvoluted by the following parameters: isomer shifts for tetrahedral $(T_d)$ and octahedral $(O_h)$ sites are 0.28 and 0.68 mm/s, respectively, and corresponding magnetic hyperfine fields are 490 and 458 kOe, respectively. The estimated chemical formula of the film by the peak intensity of Mossbauer spectrum was $Fe_{2.95}O_4$. Low temperature transition of the magnetite (Verwey transition) was not detected in resistivity measurement of the film. Properties of the film were discussed with those of pressed pellet and single crystal of synthetic magnetites. On the surface of the film, magnetite particles of about 0.2 μm in diameter were identified by noncontact atomic force microscopy (NAFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM).

  • The effect of gadolinium and boron on the texture development and magnetic properties of the texture controlled 23Cr-10NiCu duplex stainless steels were studied to develop a high performance neutron and electromagnetic shielding material. The 23Cr-10NiCu base alloy is composed of 60% of austenite and 40% of ferrite, whereas, the 23Cr-10NiCu-0.5Gd-0.8B modified alloy is composed of 66% of austenite, 27% of ferrite and 7% of CrFeB intermetallic compounds. The gadolinium and boron addition to the 23Cr-10NiCu base alloy increased mechanical properties. Microstructure observation showed that the small addition of 0.5 wt% gadolinium and 0.8 wt% boron to the alloy retarded to form texture at the same hot rolling conditions, and improved the maximum magnetism, residual magnetism and coercive force about 3%, 122% and 120%, respectively.

  • The spin-orbit interaction has received great attention in the field of spintronics, because of its property and applicability. For instance, the spin-orbit interaction induces spin precession which is the key element of spin transistor proposed by Datta and Das, since frequency of precession can be controlled by electric field. The spin-orbit interaction is classified according to its origin, Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit interaction. In particular, the Rashba spin-orbit interaction is induced by inversion asymmetry of quantum well structure and the slope of conduction band represents the strength of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The strength of spin-orbit interaction is experimentally obtained from the Shubnikov de Hass (SdH) oscillation. The SdH oscillation is resistance change of channel for perpendicular magnetic field as a result of Zeeman spin splitting of Landau level, quantization of cyclotron motion by applied magnetic field. The frequency of oscillation is different for spin up and down due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Consequently, the SdH oscillation shows the beat patterns. In many research studies, the spin-orbit interaction was treated as a tool for electrical manipulation of spin. On the other hands, it can be considered that the Rashba field, effective magnetic field induced by Rashba effect, may interact with external magnetic field. In order to investigate this issue, we utilized InAs quantum well layer, sandwiched by InGaAs/InAlAs as cladding layer. Then, the SdH oscillation was observed with tilted magnetic field in y-z plane. The y-component (longitudinal term) of applied magnetic field will interact with the Rashba field and the z-component (perpendicular term) will induce the Zeeman effect. As a result, the strength of spin-orbit interaction was increased (decreased), when applied magnetic field is parallel (anti-parallel) to the Rashba field. We found a possibility to control the spin precession with magnetic field.
