  • Numerical investigations are presented, which show that a back-flow flap can improve the dynamic stall characteristics of oscillating airfoils. The flap was able to weaken the stall vortex and therefore to reduce the peak in the pitching moment. This paper gives a brief insight into the method of function of a back-flow flap. Initial wind tunnel experiments were performed to define the structural requirements for a detailed experimental wind tunnel characterization. A structural integration concept and two different actuation mechanisms of a back-flow flap for a helicopter rotor blade are presented. First a piezoelectric actuation system was investigated, but the analytical model to estimate the performance showed that the displacement generated is too low to enable reliable operation. The seond actuation mechanism is based on magnetic forces to generate an impulse that initiates the opening of the flap. A concept based on two permanent magnets is further detailed and characterized, and this mechanism is shown to generate sufficient impulse for reliable operation in the wind tunnel.

  • In this paper, The impulse un-tripping characteristics and the electro magnetic compatibility characteristics are compared with each other. The performance of impulse un-tripping test exists at domestic standard (KSC 4613). However test items are insufficient because the more test items such as EMC exist at international standard (IEC). Also, Electric Appliances Safety Certificate has taken the certificate test since July 2004 in Korea but did not confirm the EMC performance for RCCBs made in Korea. Thus, in this paper, We experiment with Oscillatory waves immunity test and the 7 EMC tests for 32 RCCBs of 4 types (mini, home standard, plug, outlet) for 16 brands according to IEC standard 61009-1 and 61008-1. As a result, 24 RCCBs proved to be poor for surge immunity test. However the RCCBs operating incorrectly for surge immunity test operate correctly for oscillatory waves immunity test. Thus, the correlation between oscillatory waves immunity test and EMC test is little and standard for compatibility of combination surge at IEC 61000-4-5 should be added to KS standard as soon as possible.

  • Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont), usually either a green alga or cyanobacterium. According to more recent studies, the biological activities of lichens and lichen substances include an antibiotic activity, antitumor and antimutagenic activity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), allergenic activity, plant growth inhibitory activity, and enzyme inhibitory activity. This study screened lichen extracts with a potent in vitro antifungal activity against plant diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi. The compounds were isolated from Stereocaulon alpinum and Sphaerophorus globosus, and their chemical structures were identified as methyl hematommate, methyl β-orsellinate, 5-hydroxyferulic acid, sphaerophorin, and 2-heptyl-4,6-dimethoxybenzoic acid by electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analyses. In vitro disease control against Alternaria mali, Cochliobolus miyabeanus, Colletotrium gloeosporioides, and Verticillum dahliae was evaluated. And among the five compounds, only methyl hematommate was effective against A. mali, C. miyabeanus, and C. gloeosporioides. The compounds were isolated from these lichens, which have a similar biosynthetic pathway, respectively. This is the first report of these compounds being isolated from these lichens.

  • In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.

  • In this paper, we have measured eletromagnetic noises from eletcric trains and the measurment data are treated statisticlly for monig. In order to measure the noise of electric tran, we set up an automatic measuring system andd measured the magnetic field over 9 kHz ~ 30 MHz range and electric field over 30 MHz - 1, 000 MHz range. The computer controlled measurint system yields efficiently experimental APD (Amplitude Probability distribution) data each of national rail road and subway train. The measured APD curves are analysed in terms of sensitivity study of Middleton's model through 6-parameter variation. Optimal parameters are obtained from measured data using Composite Approximation Algorithm.

  • Metal/cobalt ferrite composite thin films with the saturation magnetization (M_s$)of~580 emu/cm3 and the coercivity(Hc) of 1700 Oe were prepared by the reactive sputtering. With increasing substrate temperature, Ms of the thin films increased, while Hc of the thin films decrease. This sttributed to the precipitation of $Co_xFe_{1-x}(x {\appro}x0.62)$ metal phase in the thin films. The metal phase showed the BCC structure ($a_0$=2.89 $\AA$) and Im3m space group. Also, the cobalt ferrite phase was identified as$ CoFe_2O_4$ with a cubic structure ($a_0=8.39 $\AA$$) and a space group of Fd3m. For the higher cobalt content than the stoichiometric composition,$ Co_{37.8}Fe_{62.2}$, the thin films with high Ms and Hc could be obtained in the wide substrate temperature range (200-40$0^{\circ}C$).

  • The term 'shape memory polymers (SMPs)' describes a class of polymers which can remember the original shape and recover from deformed to its original shape by the applied stimuli, e.g., heat, electricity, magnetic field, light, etc. SMPs are classified as one of the 'smart polymers' and have great potentials as high-value-added materials. Especially, low thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of SMPs can be improved by incorporating the various fillers. This paper aims to review the SMPs and their basic principles, and the trends of the development of SMPs nanocomposites.

  • Generally, a silicone rubber and a chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) have been used as a binder for the development of high-performance composite EM(Electro Magnetic) wave absorbers. In this paper, the EM wave absorption performance of natural lacquer, which is newly proposed as a binder was investigated. The prepared MnZn ferrite EM wave absorbers are mixed with natural lacquer showed excellent EM wave absorption characteristics compared with MnZn ferrite EM wave absorbers which are mixed with the conventional binders. MnZn ferrite EM wave absorbers mixed with natural lacquer were prepared and their absorption ability was also investigated. The EM wave absorbers are fabricated in different proportions of MnZn, or NiZn ferrite and natural lacquer, and their reflection coefficients are measured. The permittivity and permeability are calculated by using the measured reflection coefficients. The EM wave absorption abilities are calculated according to different thicknesses of the EM wave absorbers.

  • The influences of the load resistance $R_L$ on the magnetoelectric (ME) characteristics of $NiZnFe_2O_4+PZT$ composite were investigated in the non-resonance frequency range. The ME coefficient peak increases with increasing $R_L$, but the frequency indicating the ME coefficient peak decreases with increasing $R_L$. The maximum output power peak is approximately $9.3{\times}10^{-10}mW/Oe$ near $R_L=3.3M{\Omega}$ at f=280 Hz, and the ME coefficient seems to be saturated at $R_L>20M{\Omega}$. This frequency shift effect of $R_L$ shows that the frequency range for an ME sensor application can be modulated with the appropriate value of $R_L$. The ME output voltage has a good linear response to the ac field Hac and shows fair stability over a range of temperatures. The measured non-linearity of this sample is approximately 0.8%. This sample will allow for a low-strength magnetic ac-field sensor. The result from this sample will serve as basic data for a signal-processing circuit system.
