The present study aimed to investigate the effect of static magnetic field (SMF) on the growth and physiological characteristics of common indoor plant species. Five foliage plant species, Spathiphyllum spp., Ardisia pusilla DC., Syngonium podophyllum, Peperomia pereskiifolia, and Pilea cadierei were potted into plastic pot equipped with round type anisotropic sintered NdFeB permanent magnet inside the pot. The surface magnetic flux density of each magnet was 3,500 G. After 6 months of growth period, the biomass accumulations of Spathiphyllum, A. pusilla, and P. cadierei under SMF were statistically higher than those of controls. Tissue water content also increased under the influence of SMF in most species. The photosynthetic rate of Spathiphyllum under SMF significantly increased but other species showed no significant difference compared with control. Although there was no significant increase in the photosynthetic rates of A. pusilla, and P. cadierei, they showed remarkable increase in total fresh weight under SMF. This suggests that the demand of assimilates for normal metabolism could be decreased under magnetic influence and thereby biomass accumulation could be more favored. But this is not always true for all plant species because P. pereskiifolia in this experiment, showed no changes in both photosynthetic rate and biomass accumulation. Leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll contents were enhanced significantly in most plant species under influence of SMF. Chlorophyll a/b ratio also increased by SMF. Although there might be a limitation depending on plant species, these results suggest that long-term exposure to SMF might allow plant to have an enhanced acclimation capacity against environmental fluctuations and optimal application of SMF could increase the practical use of indoor plants such as an attempt to improve indoor air quality.
These experiments were carried out to examine the effects of elemental substitution of Mn and La-Mn on Sr-ferrite. The calcined properties for the Mn and La-Mn substitution were examined, and the sintered magnetic properties were compared with the stoichiometric condition. The magnetic properties of calcined SrM and (La-Mn)$_{0.3}$-SrM composition were as follows, respectively; M$_{s}$ : 61.06 emu/g, $_{i}$H$_{c}$ : 4.45 kOe and M$_{s}$ : 61.06 emu/g, $_{i}$H$_{c}$ : 4.46 kOe. Also, the sintered ferrite magnets of Mn$_{0.3}$-SrM and [(La-Mn)$_{0.3}$-SrM exhibited a similar properties to the stoichiometric composition but the coercivity of (La-Mn)$_{x}$-SrM was decreased rapidly with x=0.5.

Most of the Stirling cryocoolers used for infrared detector cooling in domestic is imported. Because the cooler has a high price, short life and poor durability, demand for the coolers continues steadily. However, the cooler is highly related to defense and space technology, technology transfer or co-development with the countries having experties in cooler design is very limited. The pulse tube cooler to be developed in this study is such that the mechanical piston in low temperature actuating part is replaced by the gas piston and linear compressor is adopted, which results in low vibration, long life and better durability. It is expected that development of the pulse tube cooler will not only improve our technology to the level of advanced countries, but also enhance the skills in designing and manufacturing of the infrared detector.

Optical fibers are going to be used for telecommunication, image fibers, sensors under irradiation in nuclear power plants and various irradiation facilities. Especially, Temperature detection sensors using Raman light scattering, temperature or strain sensors using fiber gratings, magnet-optical sensors using photo-magnetic effect, are already commercialized. However, When fibers are exposed to ionizing radiation, color centers are formed in fibers which reduces their light transmission, and it is limited in applying under radiation environments. In this study, $Co^{60}$ gamma-ray induced optical attenuation on Ge-doped single mode(SM) fiber has been measured. Gamma-ray is irradiated for 4hours at the dose rate of 0.5kGy/hr, 2kGy/hr, 8kGy/hr. Consequently, gamma-ray induced loss based on radiation effects in Ge-doped SM fiber occur precisely. Furthermore, dose rate effect that the higher dose rate in the same total dose, the more increase loss of optical fiber and annealing effect that the higher the loss after irradiation, the more increase the recovery rate of the loss are observed in the fiber. This results plan to make use of bases in the study of the radiation-hardened optical fiber.
Iron oxide nanoparticles were microencapsulated using fibroin, a protein polymer of silk fiber, for theragnostic applications. The content of iron oxide was determined to be 4.28% by thermogravimetric analysis and 5.11% by magnetometer. A suspension of murine fibroblast 3T3 cells grown in medium supplemented with iron oxide-microcapsules turned clear in response to the magnetic force and the cells aggregated to the magnet direction. Neodymium magnets placed on the top of the culture dish, and attracted cells to the center of the culture surface. The cells collected on the culture surface aggregated to form a rough spheroid of 2 mm in a diameter after 72 h. In the outer layer of the cell aggregate, cells were relatively large and gathered together to form a dense tissue, but the central part was observed to undergo cell death due to the mass transfer restriction. In the outer layer, iron oxide-microcapsules were lined up like chains in the direction of magnetic force. Using microCT, it was demonstrated that the iron oxides inside the cell aggregate were not evenly distributed but biased to the magnetic direction.
Poly(ester-imide)(PEI) for the electrical insulation coating was synthesized and evaluated with one-step method as well as two-step method. For the synthesis of poly(ester-imide), imide repeat unit of N,N'-(4,4'-diphenylmethane) bistrimellitimide(DID) was initially made from trimellitic anhydride(TMA) and methylene dianiline(MDA), followed by the second stage reaction of esterification. One-step reaction was performed by reaction of TMA, MDA, dimethyl terephthalate(DMT), ethylene glycol(EG), and 1,3,5-tris-(2-hydroxy ethyl) isocyanurate(THEIC) in m-cresol solvent at a time. The synthesized poly(ester-imide) was cured with xylene, P-5030K(phenol-formaldehyde resin), TK-8(TDI type blocked polyisocyanate) and tetrapropyltitanate(TPT). It was found that the content of hydroxyl group, amount of DMT, and imide repeat unit played important role for the properties of electrical insulation coating film.

To accelerate a heavy roller coaster train with over 1G force, a lot of thrust is required and linear synchronous motor(LSM) as propulsion method is suitable for this kind of system. To increase the propulsion efficiency of LSM, precise and real-time position information of vehicle is required for accurate phase control. However, the discontinuous position information with relatively long time interval is usually transmitted from the hall-sensors on the track every magnet length. In this paper, the basic motor model based on traditional dq-axis equations is described and the motor dynamic model is produced by considering the cogging force and friction loss. To improve the position accuracy, the position estimator is also proposed for LSM control system. Simulations were performed to check the characteristics of the torque control system which includes the position estimator based on the motor model. Simulation results based on the linearized model show that this control system has an enough bandwidth and phase margin and the executed algorithm achieves an ideal effect to follow the real-time position signal. Therefore, the feasibility of position estimator is also confirmed.
This study Proposes a quadrature-typed inside-out receiver coil to obtain magnetic resonance(MR) images of lumen wall. This means that the coil should receive the signals from out-side of receiver coil. This coil has wide and uniform sensitive region to compare with previous coils such as anti-solenoid coil, octal-pole coil and so on. These coils have the disadvantages that sensitive region is narrow and inhomogenous. The proposed coil is consist of two saddle coils of which directions are orthogonal to one another. The sensitivity maps of octal-Pole coil single-saddle coil and quadrature-typed inside-out coil were obtained by computer simulation. And phantom images for each coil were obtained to evaluate the performances of the coil using both 1.5T superconducting and 0.3 Permanent magnet MRI system. The uniformity of quadrature coil's sensitivity map was superior to that of octal-polel coil. Experimentally measured SNR of quadrature coil is also 36% higher than that of single-saddle coil This study shows the possibility of quadrature-typed inside-out receiver coil for the MR lumen wall images.
After proving home-made imaging pulse sequences including tailored RF pulse by phantom, susceptibility-contrast-enhanced MR venograms of cat brain were obtained using tailored RF gradient-echo(TRGE) method. Sagittal MR imaging of the cat brain obtained by TRGE technique shows several veins, for example, dorsal sagittal sinus, straight sinus, vein of corpus callosum and internal cerebral vein, etc., compared with cats anatomical figure. Tailored RF waveform was generated by PASCAL language in ASPECT 3000 computer(Switzland, Bruker). Rectangular-shaped slice profile with bi-linear ramp function as phase distribution in the slice, at which maximum value was 2$\pi$, was fourier transformed to make tailored RF pulse. Experimental MR imaging parameters were TR/TE=205/10 msec, slice thickness TH=7mm, maxtrix size=256$\times$256, in-plane resolution=0.62$\times$0.31mm$^2$, and field of view(FOV)=8cm for both conventional gradient-echo(GE) imaging and TRGE imaging techniques.
Optimal force for orthodontic treatment is the force that produces a rapid rate of tooth movement without discomfort to the Patient or ensuing tissue damage. Recently considerable interest has been generated in the application of magnets as a way to obtain an optimal force. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of static magnetic fields of Sm-Co magnets on molecular and cellular activities. The distance of erythrocyte sedimentation was measured directly, and the activities and the syntheses of $Fe^{2+}$-related enzymes (catalase and NO synthase) and non $Fe^{2+}$-related enzyme (lactic dehydrogenase) were assayed by the spectrophotometer. The growth and the proliferation of osteoblast-like cells $MC_3T_3-E_1$ were determined by the crystal violet staining and the ${^3}H$-thymidine incorporation. The erythrocytes were exposed to the pole face flux density of 1,400 G (gauss), and the enzymes and osteoblast-like cells $MC_{3}T_3-E_1$ were exposed to the flux density of 7,000 G. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The distance of sedimentation of erythrocyte was not affected by the static magnetic fields. 2. The activities of catalase and lactic dehydrogenase were not affected by the static magnetic fields. 3. The intracellular syntheses of NO synthase and lactic dehydrogenase were not affected by the static magnetic fields. 4. The growth and the proliferation of cultured osteoblast-like cells $MC_{3}T_3-E_1$ were not affected by the static magnetic fields. These results suggested that the molecular and cellular activities were not significantly influenced by the static magnetic fields.
