This paper deals with the characteristics of a small scale $high-T_c$ superconducting(HTSC) levitation system. The levitation tester. which models after electrodynamic suspension(EDS) maglev, consists of one HTSC magnet, a reaction plate, and force measuring components. Instead of moving magnet, AC current was applied to the fixed HTSC magnet. The magnet also has persistent current switch(PCS). The inductance of the magnet was 18.5 mH and total joint resistance of the magnet was $5.74{\times}10^{-7}\Omega$. AC current was applied into the HTSC magnet with various frequencies and the levitation force was calculated and measured. According to the increase of the vehicle speed, the levitation force was saturated.
The KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) superconducting magnet system consist of 16 TF(Toroidal Field) and 14 PF(Poloidal Field) coils. Internally-cooled cabled superconductors will be used for the magnet system. The magnet system adopt a superconducting CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) type. The KSTAR PF 6, 7 CICCs use NbTi Superconducting cable with stainless steel 316LN conduit while the other PF CICC use Incoloy 908 conduit. For the fabrication of PF CICC, superconducting cables have been fabricated and the cable has the diameter of 22.3mm. A continuous CICC jacketing system is developed for the CICC jacketing and the jacketing system uses the tube-mill process, which consists of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The cabling and the jacketing process is described. The welding condition and design specification of CICCs are also discussed. The fabrication results including the geometrical specification and the void fraction will be discussed.
The Magnet Methodology is not the recording of knowledge, skills, techniques, and other information from the past, but creating a knowledge base using present issues of problems for students' and teachers' life-span development through the exploration of career choices and development. In short, it is the multi-cooperative information system for commensalism. It is the magnet program that connects various level of educational institutions under a certain theme and enables students to choose on their own. And this magnet program is being adminstered by the magnet school. And some regular schools provide magnet program as vocational educations and extra-curricular activities. Magnet program reflects the concept of desegregation which was proposed by the U.S. Federal Court decision against the racial conflict which had culminated in the 60s and 70s. Magnet program enables students to choose their own programs and schools, and gives teachers and students the opportunities to develop their teaching method and learning method. That's why magnet program is called continuous, future-oriented one. Teachers and students can also get fair judgement on their activities due to the voluntary magnet program. It mainly deals with practical issues, so it is very realistic to establish the multi cooperative information system including companies, homes, communities, or governments under these practical issues. The openness of magnet program is guaranteed not only by the characteristics of the program but also by the physical layout of the magnet schools. There are no doors and walls, and classrooms are facing one another and sharing all the opinions and information. This precisely corresponds to the concept of co-existence of eco-system and the interdisciplinary approach which is essential to solve our problems.
Portable low-cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems have the potential to enable "point-of-care" and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to people in underdeveloped countries and areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets/magnet arrays/magnet assemblies are attractive to be used as a source of static magnetic field to realize the portability and to lower the cost for an MRI scanner. However, when taking the canonical Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required in a scanner, resulting in the facts that either a bulky magnet/magnet array is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if the magnet/magnet array is scaled down to a portable size. Recently, with the progress on image reconstruction based on non-linear gradient field, static field patterns without spatial linearity can be used as spatial encoding magnetic fields (SEMs) to encode MRI signals for imaging. As a result, the requirements for the homogeneity of the static field can be relaxed, which allows permanent magnets/magnet arrays with reduced sizes, reduced weight to image a bigger volume covering organs such as a head. It offers opportunities of constructing a truly portable low-cost MRI scanner. For this exciting potential application, permanent magnets/magnet arrays have attracted increased attention recently. A magnet/magnet array is strongly associated with the imaging volume of an MRI scanner, image reconstruction methods, and RF excitation and RF coils, etc. through field patterns and field homogeneity. This paper offers a review of permanent magnets and magnet arrays of different kinds, especially those that can be used for spatial encoding towards the development of a portable and low-cost MRI system. It is aimed to familiarize the readers with relevant knowledge, literature, and the latest updates of the development on permanent magnets and magnet arrays for MRI. Perspectives on and challenges of using a permanent magnet/magnet array to supply a patterned static magnetic field, which does not have spatial linearity nor high field homogeneity, for image reconstruction in a portable setup are discussed.

The severe problem in improving the positioning precision of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) is the large detent farce caused by the permanent magnet arrangement. It is generally an undesired effect that contributes to the torque ripple, vibration and noise of machine. The detent force is arisen from the difference of the position of a permanent magnet end and a tooth position. In this paper, the four methods to reduce detent force were studied and analyzed. The methods are adjusting the width of permanent magnet, varying the shape of armature teeth, relocating the permanent magnet, and adjusting the width of permanent magnet and relocating the permanent magnet at the same time. To analyze the detent farce according to flour methods, a two-dimensional Finite Element Analysis [FEA] was used and we compared with the ratio of reduction of the detent farce according to the flour methods.
Radioactive Corrosion Products (CRUD) which are generated by the neutron activation of general corrosion products at the nuclear power plant are the major source of occupational radiation exposure. Most of the CRUD has a characteristic of showing strong ferrimagnetisms. Along with the new development and production of permanent magnet (rare earth magnet) which generates much stronger magnetic field than the conventional magnet, new type of magnetic filter that can separate CRUD efficiently and eventually reduce radiation exposure of personnel at nuclear power plant is suggested. This separator consists of inner and outer magnet assemblies, coolant channel and container surrounding the outer magnet assembly. The rotational motion of the inner and outer permanent magnet assemblies surrounding the coolant channel by driving motor system produces moving alternating magnetic fields in the coolant channel. The CRUD can be separated from the coolant by the moving alternating magnetic field. This study describes the results of preliminary experiment performed with the different flow rates of coolant and rotation velocities of magnet assemblies. This new magnetic filter shows better performance results of filtering the magnetite at coolant (water). How rates, rotating velocities of magnet assemblies and particle sizes turn out to be very important design parameters.
The NdFeB magnet can be classified into the sintered magnet and bonded magnet. The former has superior magnet characteristics but the degree of freedom in shape is highly restricted, whereas the latter has a high degree of freedom, but its magnet characteristics are inferior to the former. When a NdFeB magnet is used at the elevated temperature, part of Nd must be replaced with a high priced Dy to increase its coercive force. For these reasons, a Dy free and high performance NdFeB bonded magnet is desired strongly. The author successfully developed a Dy free NdFeB anisotropic bonded magnet based on discovery of new phenomena called as d-HDDR reaction and its mass production process such as a thermally balanced hydrogen reaction furnace, micro capsuled powder, compression molding / injection molding under magnetic field, magnetic die and so on. Applied to DC brush seat motor for automotive use, the motor has become 50% small in size and weight. The commercialization of a half sized motor for automotive use has been realized up to the market share of 30%. At present, its commercialization is extending to various types of motors such as power tool, ABS motor, wiper motor, window motor, electric bike power motor, and compressor motor. It is expected that the applications will be increasingly enlarged to EV motor, wind generator, EPS motor, washing machine, and glass cutting machine. This innovative technology has realized Dy free high performance magnet and mudt make big contribution to not only rare element strategies but also energy conservation.
The following study carried out the characteristic analysis based on the magnet segment of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) for the urban railway vehicles. IPMSM affects the electromagnetic characteristics through the change in magnetic flux based on the rotor structure, and significantly influences the structural features through the change of pressure. Therefore, satisfied by the demanded traction force of the IPMSM, magnet segment derived three different model types. The 1-segment PM model consisted an undivided permanent magnet. The 2-Bridge model consisted a divided permanent magnet with the application of Bridge. The 3-Bridge model consisted additional dividing with one more Bridge applied. The electromagnetic characteristics of the three models were compared and analyzed along with the structural features regarding the scattering of permanent magnet based on strong centrifugal force from the rotation of the rotor at high speed. In conclusion, the final model with electromagnetic characteristics and structural features most suitable of IPMSM for the urban railway vehicles was derived, and the effectiveness was verified through the characteristic experiments after the production of the derived model.
Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (IPMSMs) with rare earth magnet are widely used in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. IPMSMs having high efficiency, high torque, and a wide speed range are employed in propulsion system. And the rotor in an IPMSM is generally made of a rare earth magnet to achieve a large energy product and high torque. This paper discusses issues regarding design and performance of IPMSMs using different factors of BH magnetic characteristic. It is necessary to choose factors of magnetic material according to permanent magnet shape in rotor for high performance. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is selected to obtain factors of magnetic material according to variety of rotor shapes. The RSM is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques useful for the analysis of problems in which a response of interest in influenced by several variables and the objective is to optimize response. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the torque characteristics of an IPMSM having magnet BH hysteresis curve with different rotor shape. Factors of residual flux density (Br) factor and intrinsic coercive force (Hc) are important parameters in RSM for rotor shape. The rotor shapes for IPMSMs having magnet BH characteristic were investigated using the RSM, and three shapes were analyzed in detail using FEA. The results lead to design consequence of IPMSMs in the various rare earth magnet materials.
This research has been performed to provide fundamental design aspects of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators(PMSGs) for a kilowatt class wind turbine. When it comes to kilowatt class wind turbines, the typical type of generators are Axial Flux Permanent Magnet(AFPM) generators. However, Radial Flux Permanent Magnet(RFPM) generators have been optimally designed to study the output characteristics of a kilowatt class wind turbine in Graduate School of Wind Energy, POSTECH. An existing squirrel-cage rotor has been modified for another newly designed permanent magnet rotor to utilize the commercially existing stator rotor. Electromagnetic analysis utilizing Finite Element Methods tools(ANSYS, MAXWELL 2D) has been applied to analyze the system.
