Due to their low densities and high specific strength and stiffness, magnesium alloy sheets are very attractive lightweight materials for automotive and electrical products. However, the magnesium alloy sheets are usually formed at elevated temperature because of their poor formability at room temperature. To use of the magnesium alloy sheets for an industrial, their mechanical properties at elevated temperature and appropriate forming process conditions have to be developed. In this study, non-isothermal simulations of a square cup drawing from magnesium alloy sheets have been conducted to evaluate a proper forming process conditions such as the tool temperature, the tool shoulder radius, friction between the blank and the tools. According to this study, appropriate forming process conditions of square cup drawing at elevated temperature from magnesium alloy sheets are suggested.

To achieve the weight reduction of a vehicle, Magnesium alloys are widely used in automobile parts because of its lightweight characteristics. Magnesium alloys also have advantages in recycling, stiffness, NVH , heat protection. But Magnesium alloy parts are mainly manufactured by diecasting processes, their productivity was not so high compared to by sheet metal working. We are developing vehicle hood using magnesium sheets. In this study we designed magnesium alloy hood which have equivalent mechanical characteristics to steel hood. Using finite element method we decided thickness of magnesium sheets under some design requirements and we changed the shape of hood inner panel and hinge reinforcements. Outer and inner panel thickness was 1.3mm, 1.5mm respectively. Panel dentibility analysis was performed to conform the new magnesium design by nonlinear FEM package. Formability and hemming of Magnesium sheets are the subjects for further study because they have poor stretchability compared to steel sheets.
Magnesium material could be widely used in the automotive industry because of its high strength to weight ratio, but the electric resistance spot welding process of magnesium sheets is difficult because of its low electric resistance and high thermal conduction and thermal expansion. For this reason, an electric resistance surface friction spot welding process using rotating dies is suggested for the spot welding of magnesium metal sheets. This welding method can be characterized by three heating methods: (1) electric resistance heating on contacted surface, (2) surface friction heating by rotating dies, and (3) thermal conduction heating from heated steel electrodes, for the fusion of metal at the interfacial zone between the two magnesium sheets. This welding process also has variables to explore, such as welding currents, diameters of the steel electrode, and rotating dies. It was found that the welding strength could reach industrial requirements by applying a welding current of 11.0kA, with steel electrodes of 12mm diameter, with rotating dies of 4.4 mm diameter, under the condition of a revolution speed of 1200rpm of rotating dies, for the surface friction spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets of 1.4mm thickness.

Being a lightweight material, magnesium is increasingly employed in automotive parts. However, because of its hexagonal closed-packed (HCP) crystal structure, in which only the basal plane can move, the magnesium alloy sheets show low ductility and formability at room temperature. Thus the press forming of magnesium alloy sheets has been performed at elevated temperature within range of $200^{\circ}C{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. However, we confirmed that using rotational incremental forming magnesium alloy sheets were formed without any heating at previous study. In this study, at the forming of square cup using rotational incremental sheet forming, the strain distributions were obtained and it was compared with forming limit curve at neck (FLCN). Also, forming limit curves at fracture (FLCF) of magnesium alloy sheets were obtained at elevated temperature and it was compared with the strain distribution of square cup of magnesium alloy sheet. In this study, we confirmed that conventional forming limit curves can not predict rotational incremental forming.

In this study, an electric resistance dual-spot welding process using a copper electrode inserted in a heating electrode is suggested for the spot welding of AZ31 magnesium sheets. This spot-welding process involves two heating methods for welding at the interfacial zone between the magnesium sheets, one of which is the heating method by thermal conduction from the heating electrode heated by the welding current induced to the steel electrode, and the other heating method uses the electric resistance between the contacted surfaces of the two sheets by the welding current induced to the copper electrode. This welding process includes the welding variables, such as the current induced in the heating electrode and the copper electrode, and the outer diameters of the heating electrode. This is because the heat conducted from the heating electrode can be maintained at a higher temperature in the welding zone, which has a slow cooling effect on the nugget of the melted metal after the welding step. The pressure exerted during the pressing of the magnesium sheets by the heating electrode can be increased around the nugget zone at the spot-welding zone. Thus, it not only reduces the warping effect of the elastoplastic deformation of sheets, but also the corona bond can make it less prone to cracking at the welded zone, thereby reducing the number of nuggets expelled out of the corona bond. In conclusion, it was known that an electric resistance dual spot welding process using the copper electrode inserted in the heating electrode can improve the welding properties in the electric resistance spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium sheets.

Due to their low density, high specific strength and electromagnetic interference shielding, magnesium alloy sheets are used increasingly more often in automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries. However, magnesium ally sheets should be usually formed at elevated temperature because of their poor formability at room temperature. For the use of magnesium alloy sheets for an industrial, their mechanical properties at elevated temperature and appropriate forming process conditions have to be developed. In this study, the warm deep drawing process of AZ31 sheets is studied numerically by non-isothermal simulation. The difference between the isothermal simulation results and the non-isothermal simulation results and the progress of warm forming are discussed.

Magnesium alloy sheets have unique mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening response. The unusual mechanical behavior of magnesium alloys has been understood by the limited symmetry crystal structure of HCP metals or by deformation twinning. In the present study, the continuum plasticity models considering the unusual plastic behavior of magnesium alloy sheet were derived for a finite element analysis. A new hardening law based on two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metal sheets such as Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. In terms of the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified to include the anisotropy of magnesium alloys.

Durability of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams with CFRP sheets under wetting and drying cycles of magnesium sulfate attack is investigated in this research. Accordingly, 18 RC beams were designed and made where 10 of them were strengthened by CFRP sheets at their tension side. Magnesium sulfate attack and wetting and drying cycles with water and magnesium sulfate solution were considered as exposure conditions. Finally, flexural performance of the beams was measured before and after 5 months of exposure. Results indicated that the bending capacity of the strengthened RC beams was reduced about 10% after 5 months of immersion in the magnesium sulfate solution. Wetting and drying cycles of magnesium sulfate solution reduced the bending capacity of the strengthened RC beams about 7%. Also, flexural capacity reduction of the strengthened RC beams in water and under wetting and drying cycles of water was negligible.
Magnesium sheet used in electrical device due to mobility and EMF shielding characteristics. Magnesium case by press forming was advantageous compare with conventional die casting process, because of its thin gauge of wall and surface quality. But it need to makes the boss to fix inner part or assemble the case. CD stud welding was effective way for joining the boss to the thin gauge case of the electrical devices. In this study, we investigated the performances of the magnesium boss welder To measure the process parameters such as the force and the weld current, we design the monitoring system for CD stud welding. We test the characteristics of CD stud welding for AZ31 sheets at some variables. Finally we select the optimum welding range of magnesium sheets in CD stud welding process.
