  • In present paper, we used magnesium alloy having a lower density and higher electrical conductivity for bipolar plate to reduce the weight of PEM fuel cell. The silver was coated to prevent corrosion and form passivation film on the metal surface with sputtering. In acid proof evaluation for setting optimal coating conditions, the homogeneity of coating thickness was improved by coating with the thickness of 3 ${\mu}m$ which not indicated any micro cracks and the temperature $180^{\circ}C$. The performance test and evaluation based on the clamping pressure and channel depth to determine the configuration of bipolar plate for assembling single cell was implemented. And then we assembled single cell with this bipolar plate and implemented the performance test to ensure and compare the current-voltage performance followed as several factors such as coating or non-coating, the change of clamping pressure, the change of channel depth, etc. As these results, the maximum power density of single cell with the coated bipolar plate was 192 $mW/cm^2$ and it was confirmed that the power density per unit mass was better than existing metal bipolar plate.

  • This study focuses on the microstructural development of 99% magnesium alloy sheet manufactured using twin roll casting (TRC) process. Herein, a plate with a thickness of 5 mm was manufactured using the TRC process, homogenization heat treatment was performed at 400℃ for 2-32 h, and finally, the change in microstructure was evaluated via optical microscopy and textural analysis. The results suggest that the plate manufactured using the TRC process was not destroyed and was successfully rolled into a plate. Microscopic observation suggested that the dendritic cast structure was arranged along the rolling direction. And the central layer of the rolled plate, where was present in a liquid state at the beginning of rolling, solidified later during the TRC process to form central segregation. The initial cast structure and inhomogeneous structure of the plate were recrystallized by homogenization heat treatment for only 2 h, and it was confirmed that the segregated part of the central layer became homogeneous and recrystallization occurred. Grain growth occurred as the heat treatment time increased, and secondary recrystallization occurred, wherein only some grains were grown. The textural analysis, which was conducted via X-ray diffraction, confirmed that the relatively weak basal plane texture developed using the TRC process was formed into a random texture after heat treatment.

  • The aim of the present article is to study the micropolar thermoelastic interactions in an infinite Kelvin-Voigt type viscoelastic thermally conducting plate. The coupled dynamic thermoelasticity and generalized theories of thermoelasticity, namely, Lord and Shulman's and Green and Lindsay's are employed by assuming the mechanical behaviour as dynamic to study the problem. The model has been simplified by using Helmholtz decomposition technique and the resulting equations have been solved by using variable separable method to obtain the secular equations in isolated mathematical conditions for homogeneous isotropic micropolar thermo-viscoelastic plate for symmetric and skew-symmetric wave modes. The dispersion curves, attenuation coefficients, amplitudes of stresses and temperature distribution for symmetric and skew-symmetric modes are computed numerically and presented graphically for a magnesium crystal.

  • The effect of the presence of magnesium ions in the preparation of calcium phosphate (CP) thin films on the physicochemical and biological properties of the films has been investigated in this study. Five different surfaces were used and the culture plate (CTL) and CP film prepared in the absence of magnesium (CaP) were used for the comparison. Three different films were prepared at different magnesium concentrations. CP films prepared at the Mg concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 mM were designated as CaPL, CaPM, and CaPH, respectively. The observation of surface morphology of the CP films using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed that the presence of magnesium affected considerably the morphology of the films including a decrease of surface porosity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the determination of the crystallinity of the CP films showed that the structure of the films was amorphous. Examination using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the prepared films consisted of calcium, phophorus, and magnesium. Cell adhesion assays elucidated that cell adhered less as the magnesium concentration increased. However, cell proliferation assays demonstrated that the cells proliferated more actively on the films prepared at the higher magnesium concentration. These results suggest that the presence of magnesium may promote the biocompatibility of CP films.

  • An inverter scroll compressor is used for the air conditioning in cars. Scrolls would be changed from the aluminum material to the magnesium material in order to satisfy the light weight trends of cars. The material changing influences on the scroll dimensions particularly the gap between two scrolls. Since the larger gap declines the performance of the compression, the gap between wraps of scrolls or the gap between wraps of scrolls to the plate of the opposite scroll is regarded as an important design variable. This paper is focused on the effects of the thermal stress due to the materials changing. The temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet is about 60 degrees and the highest operating temperature in the compressor is less than 110 degrees. The level of thermal stresses in the magnesium scroll is less than the result from aluminum one. The trend of the deformation is revealed that the normal directional deformation is 2 times lager than the in-plane directional deformation. Therefore the gap between the top of the wrap to the plate of the opposite scroll become more important than the other gaps. The orbiting scroll deforms larger than the fixed scroll by the thermal stresses. The deformation of the magnesium scroll is about 10% lager than that of the aluminum scroll. This value is similar to the ratio of the coefficients of thermal expansion of two materials. At the initial design stage, the results give many useful guides to engineers to propose gaps between parts.

  • Corrosion failure analysis of the flow plate, which is one of the accessories of the plate heat exchanger in a district heating system, was performed. The flow plate is made of 316 stainless steel, and water at different temperatures in the flow plate exchanges heat in a non-contact manner. The flow plate samples in which water mixing issues occurred were collected. Corrosion-induced pits, oxides, and contaminants were observed at locations where two plates are regularly in contact. The EDS analysis of the surface oxides and contaminants revealed that they were composed of carbon, silicon, and magnesium, which came from chemical adhesives. The IC/ICP analyses showed that the concentration of chloride ions was 30 ~ 40 ppm, which was not sufficient to cause corrosion of stainless steel. In the crevice, a local decrease in dissolved oxygen occurs along with an increase in chloride ions, thus forming an acidic environment. These environments destroyed the passive film of stainless steel, resulting in pits. Moreover, contaminants formed a narrower gap between the two metal plates and inhibited the diffusion of ions, thereby accelerating crevice corrosion.

  • Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate whiskers ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH) were prepared using hydrothermal reaction with magnesium oxide (MgO) and magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) as the starting materials. The effects of the molar ratio of $MgSO_4$/MgO and amount of $NH_4OH$ were studied. As a result, 513 MHSH whiskers co-existed with hexagonal plate $Mg(OH)_2$ at low concentration of $SO_4^{2-}$. The molar ratio of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$/MgO was 7:1, uniform 513 MHSH whiskers were formed without impurity such as $Mg(OH)_2$. Appropriate amount of $NH_4OH$ has affected to formation of high quality MHSH. Their morphologies and structures were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA).
