  • Although magnesium alloy has received much attention to date for its lightweight and high specific strength, their applications are impeded by the low formability which is caused by the hexagonal crystal structure at room temperature. In general, equal-channel angular extrusion(ECAE) is recognized as one of the attractive severe plastic deformation techniques where the processed bulk metals generally achieve ultrafine-grained microstructure leading to improved physical characteristics and mechanical properties. ECAE process has several parameters such as angle of die, process temperature, process route and speed. During ECAE process of Mg alloy, these parameters has great influence on the extrudability and the mechanical properties of alloy. The aim of this study is to estimate the influences of process conditions on the formability of AZ31 and AZ31-CaO alloys. Mg alloys are processed through ECAE at elevated temperatures using three types of die with channel angle of $90^{\circ}$, $110^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$ using route $B_c$, respectively. This study discusses the feasibility of using ECAE to improve both formability and strength on magnesium alloys by comparative analyzing the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution in each condition.

  • The laser surface treatment of magnesium alloy was studied. $ZrO_2$ was used as sintering ceramics, and its corrosion resistance was verified. Appropriate laser parameters were proposed for homogeneous solidification of the sintered layer. The chemical compositions of the sintered layer were analyzed with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. $Na_2SO_4$ was used for a corrosion test, and the resistance of the sintered sample was confirmed. The microstructures of the sintered parts were also examined. The solidified grains on the top sintered surface were observed; however, reasonable fusion was obtained at the interface between the baseline and the ceramics. Laser surface treatment using $ZrO_2$ on magnesium alloy showed an improvement in corrosion resistance.

  • Magnesium has good castability and limited workability, so its products have been manufactured by almost casting processes. In this study, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used to butt-weld the sand casting magnesium alloys. And the effect of welding conditions such as peak power, pulse width, welding speed was evaluated in detail. As a result of this study, large underfill and plenty of spatter taken place under the conditions with high peak power. Thus, it is recommended to use low peak power and long pulse width to obtain good welds with deep penetration. It is also confirmed that the welding speed and pps(pulse per second) are directly connected at weld defects such as underfill, porosity.

  • The crystallographic texture plays an important role in both the plastic deformation and the macroscopic anisotropy of magnesium alloys. In previous study for AZ80 magnesium alloy, it was found that the main texture components of the textures vary with the deformation conditions at high temperatures. Also, the basal texture was formed at stress of more than 15-20 MPa and the non-basal texture was formed at stress of less than 15-20 MPa. Therefore, in this study, uniaxial compression deformation of AZ80 magnesium alloy was carried out at high temperature (stress of 15-20 MPa). The uniaxial compression deformation is performed at temperature of 723 K and strain rate 3.0 × 10-3s-1, with a strain range of between -0.4 and -1.3. Texture measurement was carried out on the compression planes by the Schulz reflection method using nickel filtered Cu Kα radiation. EBSD measurement was also conducted in order to observe spatial distribution of orientation. As a result of high temperature deformation, the main component of texture and its development vary depending on deformation condition of this study.

  • Magnesium alloys usage has been increased every year owing to its lightness, damping capacity, and EMI shielding, etc. In case of magnesium, it is mainly produced by diecasting due to high fluidity of melts. But, casting defect occurs many times because of low heat capacity of the magnesium. Therefore, wrought products can be applied for defect-free and mechanical properties. but it is insufficient in market share because of crystalline structure. The domestic market of wrought magnesium products are not revitalized compare to advanced countries. Accordingly we are going to forecast a domestic market of wrought products through searching the present of korean magnesium industry.

  • In recent years, Magnesium(Mg) and its alloys have become a center of special interest in the automotive industry. Due to their high specific mechanical properties, they offer a significant weight saving potential in modern vehicle constructions. Most Mg alloys show very good machinability and processability, and even the most complicated die casting parts can be easily produced. In this study, Microstructure, Vickers hardness and tensile tests were examined and performed for each specimen to verify effects of forming conditions. Also to verify upsettability and forming limit of the specimen at room temperature and elevated temperature, upsetting experiments were performed. For comparison, experiments at elevated temperature were performed for various Mg alloy, such as AZ31, AZ91, and AM50. The experimental results were compared with those of CAE analysis to propose forming limit of Magnesium alloys.

  • One of the most important characteristics of Mg alloys is the high ratio of strength to weight. This is why there is a high demand for applications with these alloys in the transportation industries to reduce the fuel consumption and to save energy. In addition, magnesium (and its alloys) is of considerable interest as a structural material, especially in the aerospace and automotive industries thanks to its low density. However, its major drawback is its high sensitivity to corrosion. Therefore, its use requires the application of a surface treatment. This study used a die-casted AZ91D Mg alloyand all the samples were annealed (in $120^{\circ}C$). The surface microstructure and phase distribution in thin-walled AZ91D magnesium components cast on a hot-chamber die-casting machine were investigated by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The reflectance differences in the bulk state comparison with the annealing state are caused by hydrogenation presence of the Mg layer under an oxidation surface layer.

  • Using lightweight materials in vehicle manufacturing in order to reduce energy consumption is one of the most effective approach to decrease pollutant emissions. As a lightweight material, magnesium is increasingly employed in automotive parts. However, because of its hexagonal closed-packed(HCP) crystal structure, in which only the basal plane can move, the magnesium alloy sheets show low ductility and formability at room temperature. Thus the press forming of magnesium alloy sheets has been performed at elevated temperature within range of $200^{\circ}C{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. Here we try the possibility of sheet metal forming at room temperature by adopting incremental forming technique with rotating tool, which is so called as rotational-incremental sheet forming(RISF). In this rotational-incremental sheet forming the spindle tool rotates on the surface of the sheet metal and moves incrementally with small pitch to fit the sheet metal on the desired shape. There are various variables defining the formability of sheet metals in the incremental forming such as speed of spindle, pitch size, lubricants, etc. In this study, we clarified the effects of spindle speed and pitch size upon formability of magnesium alloy sheets at room temperature. In case of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm of pitch size with hemispherical rotating tool of 6.0mm radius, the maximum temperature at contact area between rotating tool and sheet metal were $119.2^{\circ}C,\;130.8^{\circ}C,\;and\;177.3^{\circ}C$. Also in case of 300, 500, and 700rpm of spindle speed, the maximum temperature at the contact area were $109.7^{\circ}C,\;130.8^{\circ}C\;and\;189.8^{\circ}C$.

  • A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesium alloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraft components. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterized by SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed better corrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily due to the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restricting the diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermo vacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical properties of the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimen with an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness during the pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.
