Urban maglev should have such characteristics as not only environmentally friendliness and excellent driving capability but also curve negotiation performance because its routes have many sharp curves. Due to normal mechanism of urban maglev its relative displacements of secondary spring are bigger than conventional railway vehicle and the centering force of levitation magnet is smaller than wheel-on-rail system. These features of maglev affect the curving negotiation and so the additional steering device is to be required on Urban maglev to improve the running performance at sharp curve of less than about R50m. Some developed urban maglev had the passive steering device which consists of mechanical linkage or hydraulic cylinder and closed-route piping. But it has drawback as complexity of layout of understructure of vehicle and functional limitation of passive mechanism regarding transient curve. These demerits could be solved by using active steering system. But it has a weak point that an active device should have actuators and additional inverter or hydraulic power source. In this paper, the semi-active steering system for urban maglev is to be introduced.
In 2013, Korea will become the world's second country to operate the urban Maglev system with the inauguration of demonstration line at Incheon International Airport. A prototype Maglev is under the test at KIMM's(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, Daejeon) track. This Maglev is an EMS(Electromagnetic suspension)-type vehicle of controlled $8{\pm}3mm$ air gap. The air gap between electromagnet and the guiderail in an EMS-type Maglev must be maintained within an allowable deviation by controlling the magnet. The air gap response is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics of the elevated guideway. For this reason, the interaction between the vehicle with electromagnets and the elevated guideway must be understood to ensure safe running. The purpose of this paper is to compare vibration characteristics of the vehicle on the switching system and other sections when the full weight condition of urban maglev vehicle that 26.5 tons per car(empty car weight 19 tons + passenger condition 7.5 tons), is applied. Through such results, Maglev vehicles and switching system can be established and the levitation stability can be improved.
Test Results and Status of development of the urban transit maglev system(UTM-O1) are reported. Maglev Project Team in KIMM, in cooperation with Hyundai Precision Company and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute(KERI), has successfully finished the second stage development project (1995. 5-1998. 8) and demonstrated a prototype two vehicle consisted urban maglev train operating in the speed range of 50km/h. In this paper, we report various test results of the UTM-01 system, present status of quo and future prospect, and what have been done so far to improve the performance of the maglev system overall.

The flexible multibody dynamic model of an EMS-type Maglev vehicle is necessary in design stage to predict its behavior, load history and levitation performance. Especially in EMS-type Maglev vehicle, the body flexibility of its bogie with electromagnets affects the levitation performance because its feedback control system is more sensitive to vibration of bogie structure. The flexible multibody dynamic model of a 1/2 Maglev vehicle under test is presented. The basic modeling procedure is almost the same as in other applications. However, the feedback control system model unique in EMS-type maglev vehicle must be included in the model. With the model proposed in this study, the dynamic behavior, load history and levitation performance are more precisely predicted. This model could realize the virtual prototyping in EMS-type Maglev vehicle area.
In this study, the new three-dimensional finite element analysis model of guideway structures considering ultra high-speed magnetic levitation train-bridge interaction, in which the various improved finite elements are used to model structural members, is proposed. The box-type bridge deck of guideway structures is modeled by Nonconforming Flat Shell finite elements with six DOF (degrees of freedom). The sidewalls on a bridge deck are idealized by using beam finite elements and spring connecting elements. The vehicle model devised for an ultra high-speed Maglev train is employed, which is composed of rigid bodies with concentrated mass. The characteristics of levitation and guidance force, which exist between the super-conducting magnet and guideway, are modeled with the equivalent spring model. By Lagrange's equations of motion, the equations of motion of Maglev train are formulated. Finally, by deriving the equations of the force acting on the guideway considering Maglev train-bridge interaction, the complete system matrices of Maglev train-guideway structure system are composed.

A new permanent magnet biased hybrid maglev actuator is developed. Compared to the classical hybrid maglev actuators, the new maglev has unique flux paths such that bias fluxes are separated with control flux paths. The control flux paths have minimum reluctances only developed by air gaps, so the currents to produce control fluxes can be minimized. The consumed power to operate this maglev system can also be minimized. The gravity load can be compensated with the static magnetic forces developed by the permanent magnet bias fluxes while external disturbances are controlled with the bidirectional AC magnetic forces developed by control fluxes by currents. 1-D circuit model is developed for this model such that the flux densities and magnetic forces are extensively analyzed. 3-D finite element model is also developed to analyze the performances of the maglev actuator.
This paper treats of the recent trends in the development, of the Magnetically levitated vehicle(Maglev) and the propulsion system of the Maglev in the world. Consequently, the material data for the guide post in the research and formulation of development policy are prevented.

This paper presents the status of advanced technologies and domestic researches for development of Korean next generation maglev. Generally, two specific configurations such as the EMS (Electromagnetic Suspension) with LSM (Linear Synchronous Motor) and EDS (Electrodynamic Suspension) with LSM can be employed as a propulsion and levitation device of high-speed maglev. Worldwide high-speed maglev developments refer to projects such as the German Transrapid with EMS, the Japanese MLX with EDS, and the U.S. Inductrack with PM (Permanent Magnet) EDS maglev system. In this paper, the propulsion and levitation systems of these world wide high-speed maglev have been reviewed and analysed.
This paper presents a framework of nonlinear dynamic analysis of a low-speed moving maglev (magnetically levitated) vehicle subjected to cross winds and controlled using a clipped-LQR actuator with time delay compensation. A four degrees-of-freedom (4-DOFs) maglev-vehicle equipped with an onboard PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller traveling over guideway girders was developed to regulate the electric current and control voltage. With this maglev-vehicle/guideway model, dynamic interaction analysis of a low-speed maglev vehicle with guideway girders was conducted using an iterative approach. Considering the time-delay issue of unsynchronized tuning forces in control process, a clipped-LQR actuator with time-delay compensation is developed to improve control effectiveness of lateral vibration of the running maglev vehicle in cross winds. Numerical simulations demonstrate that although the lateral response of the maglev vehicle moving in cross winds would be amplified significantly, the present clipped-LQR controller exhibits its control performance in suppressing the lateral vibration of the vehicle.
