  • Professional journal articles, while eye-catching, nay also be somewhat superficial and formal. In fact, interior design magazines focus on providing images rather than texts to appeal to readers. Thus, it has been difficult for interior design magazines to represent interior designers who are serious about their career. The KOSID Journal, on the other hand, is not a professional journal, but handles current Issues that are most sensitive and important to professional interior designers and provides understanding of contemporary interior design trends. In this respect, this study analyzed the contents of the KOSID Journal, from its founding issue (1983) until it began to serve academic purposes with the establishment of the Interior Design Association in 1992 and discussions of the interior design discourse of the time.

The Portrayal of the Image of Women in Cosmetic Advertisements

  • The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate how women's visual images in cosmetic magazine advertisements have changed over time and (2) to examine whether women's images in advertisements have changed in regards to the symbolic ambiguity of dress and appearance styles according to the time period. Social identity theory was used as the theoretical framework to understand the change of gender identity and physical appearance. The two magazines of Vogue and Working Woman were selected for the years of 1981, 1991, and 2001. The findings of the study showed that women's make-up colors portrayed in cosmetics magazine advertisements changed from artificial to natural over 20 years and messages in cosmetics magazine advertisement changed from a focus on attractiveness to a focus on skin-care and health. However, appearance styles of women in the advertisements analyzed were predominantly more feminine than masculine for the entire time period studied.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend and meanings of the decoration which has appeared on fashion magazines from 1995 through 2005. The method of this study is to analyze 1627 decorations represented in fashion magazine focused on blouse, jacket and one-piece. As a result of this study I drew the following conclusion. First, the decoration reflects a life-style that modern people persue comfort, casual wear. Second, the decoration redefines the feminine identity by fusing different factors of fashion style. Third, the decoration reflects the hybrid tendencies through reconstruction by merging different culture or things.

A Study on the Cultural Meanings of Underclothes Advertisements in Women's Magazines (여성잡지에 나타난 속옷광고의 문화적 의미 연구)

  • This study examines the cultural meanings of underclothes advertisements through the analysis of advertisement messages appeared in women's magazines of Korea which are , and published between 1965 and 1999 mainly targeting the women at the age of 20s through 40s. The method of study is mainly qualitative with subsidiary citations from the results of content analysis. The advertisement messages identified in underclothes advertisements are 1) body care, 2) gender role, 3) commercialization of eroticism, 4) feminism, 5) men's social status and masculinity, 6) social issues of concern and ideologies of the time. Advertisements produce a new meaning through a dynamic mixture of the advertisement's visual and verbal factors. Such a new meaning then can become a part of culture and therefore we can obtain insights of a society culture by analyzing the advertisement messages of underclothes advertisements. Advertisements bring definite changes to the culture through long-term and implicit influences on the constituents of the culture.

Analysis of Fashion Magazine Advertising by FCB GRID (FCB GRID 상품분류에 의한 패션잡지 광고 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the types of expression of fashion magazine advertising using the Foote, Cone and Belding(FCB) GRID model. Consequently, this study examined the presentation of fashion magazine advertising. The fashion magazine advertising(771 cases in women's magazines, 120 cases in men's magazines) was classified according to the FCB GRID model. The fashion magazine advertising was categorized into high involvement-feeling goods(jewelry, accessories, bags, shoes, perfumes, men and women dresses, jeans, bathing suits etc.), low involvement-feeling goods(casual wears, imitation accessories etc.), high involvement-thinking goods(cosmetics, underwears, sports shoes etc.) and low involvement-thinking goods(hair goods, sports wears, undergarments etc.). A great of the fashion advertising consisted of photography and the emotional approach. Thinking goods placed emphasis on the functional value, whereas high involvement-feeling goods placed emphasis on the emotional value and low involvement-feeling goods on the fashionable value.

Analysis on Printing Advertisements Appearing Monthly Magazines for Korean Women (여성잡지광고의 레이아웃요소와 제품생명주기에 관한 연구)

  • Two-page spread sheet advertising appearing on monthly women's magazine were selected and analyzed for this study. All 299 advertisements were sampled from 5 kinds of women's magazines published from January to June in 2002. The results shows that; 1) all elements of layout in advertisements are significantly related to product life cycle; 2) Similarity of layout type proposed to differentiate layout from competitor's advertisements; 3) Realistic picture of products using high technological equipments and skill occupied most of ad space. It proposed the possibility of varied illustration type; finally, Using foreign models both imported products and domestic products are increased. It shows that the level of westernized insight of current consumer.

A Study on the Expression of Apparel Advertising in Men's Apparel

  • The purpose of this study was to offer basic resource for effective advertising strategy of men's apparel by analysing the characteristics of the appeal types in the men's apparel ads. 272 photographs were collected the following magazines ; fashion magazine, men's magazine, luxury magazine, woman's general magazine, and fashion professional magazine. It was related to the men's apparel ads of magazines above from January to December of 2001. The results of this study was as follows; Appeal types of apparel advertising in men's apparel were divided into style appeal, informercial appeal, sexual appeal, lifestyle appeal, image appeal, and masculinity appeal and appeared other appeal types according to men's fashion style, brand types, and magazine types. It also was closely connected with the men's market positioning. Consequently, the study will be helpful to plan the effective and economic strategy of men's apparel ads.
