  • New di-N-cyanomethylated tetraaza macrocycle 2.13-bis(cyanomethyl)-5.16-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo[$16.4.0.0^7.12$]docosane $(L^2)$ has been prepared by the reaction of 3, 14-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo $(L^1)$ with bromoacetonitrile. The square-planar complexes $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2(M=Ni(II)$ or Cu(II) can be prepared by the reaction of $L^2$ with the corresponding metal ion in acetonitrile. The cyanomethyl groups of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2readily$ react with water to $yield[ML^3](ClO_4)_2$ containing pendant amide groups. The trans-octahedral complexes $[ML^4](ClO_4)_2$, in which two imidate ester groups are coordinated to the metal ion, can be also prepared by the reaction of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2with$ methanol under mild conditions. The hydrolysis and alcoholysis reactions of $[ML^2](ClO_4)_2are$ promoted by the central metal ion, in spite of the fact that the cyanomethyl group is not involved in intramolecular coordination. The reactions are also promoted by a base such as triethylamine but are retarded by an $acid(HClO_4).Interestingly$, the imidate ester groups of $[ML^4]^2$ are unusually resistant to hydrolysis even in 0.1 M $HCIO_4$ or 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution. Crystal structure of $[NiL^4](ClO_4)_2shows$ that the Ni-N (pendant imidate ester group) bond is rlatively strong; the Ni-N bond distance is shorter then the Ni-N(tertiary) distance and is similar to the Ni-N (secondary) distance.

  • A novel malemide epoxy containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions have been synthesized by curing malemide epoxy resin (MIEB-13) and Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of macrocyclic bis-hydrazone Schiff base. The Schiff base was synthesized by reacting 1,4-dicarbnyl phenyl dihydrazide with 2,6-diformyl-4-methyl phenol. The Schiff base and its Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectral (IR, $^1H$ NMR, UV-vis., FAB mass, ESR), thermal and magnetic data. The curing reaction of maleimide epoxy compound with metal complexes was studied as curing agents. The stability of cured samples was studied by thermo-gravimetric analyses and which have excellent chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance. Further, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and definitional scanning colorimetric (DSC) techniques were confirmed the phase homogeneity of the cured systems.

  • A new di-N-cyanoethylated 14-membered tetraaza macrocycle 1,8-bis(2-cyanoethyl)-3,5,7,7,10,12,14,14-octamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane $(L^2)$ and its nickel(II) complex $[NiL^2(OAc)]^+$ have been prepared. The square-planar complex $[NiL^2](C IO_4)_2$ can be prepared by addition of $HClO_4$ to a hot aqueous solution of $[NiL^2(OAc)]^+$ The Ni-N (tertiary amino group) bond distances $(2.008{\AA})$ of $[NiL^2](C IO_4)_2$ are relatively long, and the complex exhibits a d-d transition band at unusually long wavelength (ca. 515 nm). The complex $[NiL^2](C IO_4)_2$ rapidly reacts with acetate ion or ethylenediamine (en) to produce $[NiL^2(OAc)]^+$ or [Ni(en)_3]^{2+}$, respectively, and is readily decomposed in NaOH (0.01 M) solution. The chemical properties of $[NiL^2]^{2+}$ as well as its synthetic procedure are quite different from those for other related 14-membered tetraaza macrocyclic complexes. Effects of the N-cyanoethyl and C-methyl groups on the properties of $L^2$.

  • The complexation reaction between Pb2+,TI and Cd2+ions and macrocyclic ligands, 18-crown-6 ( 18C6) and dibenzo- 18-crown-6 (DB 18C6), was studied in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)-nitromethane (NM) and dimethyl-formamide (DMF)-nitromethane binary system s by square wave polarography (SWP) technique. The stoichiometry and stability of the complexes were determined by monitoring the shifts in half-waves or peak potentials of the polarographic waves of metal ions against the Iigand concentration. In most cases, the stability constants of complexes increase with increasing amounts of the nitromethane in mixed binary solvents used in this study. The complexes formed between 18C6 and DB18C6 and these metal cations in all cases had a stoichiometry of 1 : 1. The results obtained show that there is an inverse relationship between the formation constant of complexes and the donor number of solvents based on a Gatmann donocity scale and the stability constants show a high sensitivity to the composition of the mixed solvent systems. A linear behavior was observed for variation of log Kf of I8C6 complexes vs the composition of the mixed solvent systems in NM/DMSO and NM/DMF,but a non-linear behavior was observed in the case of DB 18C6 complexes in these binary systems. In most of the systems investigated, the Pb2+ cation forms a more stable complex with the 18C6 than other two cations and the order of selectivity of this Iigand for cations is: Pb2+ > TI+,Cd2+.

  • An investigation of the interaction of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Ag(I) with two N,N'-dibenzylated nitrogen-oxygen mixed donor macrocyclic ligands, has been carried out. Tle log K values for the respective complexes in 95% methanol have been determined potentiometrically. Both ligands have formed stable complex with only Cu(II) and Ag(I) ion. Transport measurements in a bulk liquid membrane system exhibited a very high selectivity of Ag(I) ion over the other metal ions used.

  • The reactions of mercury(II) chloride with O3S2-donor macrocyclic ligands with (L1) and without (L2) dibenzosubunit afforded respective exo- (1) and endo-coordinated (2) complexes depending on the ring rigidity of the ligands. From the X-ray crystal structures and comparative NMR studies for the complexes 1 and 2, it is confirmed that the resulting species with different coordination modes exist not only in solid state but also in solution state.

  • A three-layered poly(benzyl ether) dendrimer having a bis-ethynylbenzene core was synthesized and characterized with $^{1}H$ NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS spectroscopy. The dendrimer was reacted with platinum complexes to obtain platinum-acetylide based organometallic polymers. When the dendrimer was reacted with trans-[$PtCl_{2}(PEt_{3})_{2}$], a high molecular weight polymeric compound was formed, whereas, with cis-[$PtCl_{2}dppp$], a uniform molecular weight compound was formed, which was found to be a dimeric metallacycle by $^{1}H\;NMR,\;^{31}P\;NMR$ and ESI-TOF-MS spectroscopy. Both these complexes exhibited relatively a strong emission around 440 nm, indicating that they could be potential candidates for blue emitting polymer LEDs.
