Development of Micro Milling EDM and Analysis of Machined Characteristics (마이크로 밀링 EDM 머신 개발 및 가공특성 분석)

  • Micromachining is gaining popularity due to recent advancements in MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). Using conventional micromachining, it is relatively difficult to produce moving components in the order of microns. Photolithography for silicon material has high accuracy machining, but it has low aspect ratio. X-ray lithography has ultra high accuracy machining, but it has expensive cost. Micro-EDM(electro discharge machining) has been gaining popularity as a new alternative method to fabricate micro-structures. In this study, Micro-EDM machine is developed available for fabricate micro-structures and two processes such as side cut EDM and milling EDM is proposed. Several sets of experiment results have been performed to study the characteristics of the machining process.

  • Modal analysis is an important and essential process in design of a high speed machining center. Generally, modal analysis of a built-in spindle system has not taken the work piece's shape and dimension into consideration. Since small and long work pieces influence greatly the natural frequency of the entire system, the high speed spindle system which continuously makes small machine parts by long work pieces for improvement of machining time has to consider the machining work pieces. Therefore frequency characteristics of the spindle system with long work pieces are studied in this paper.

  • An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of pipe. In this paper, another method of magnetic abrasive machining in which the N and S magnetic poles are feed and a workpiece is rotated only is tried in a fine-pipe, and its finishing characteristics is experimently investigated by various effective factors such as feeding amplitude. From the experimental results, it is found that the feed effects of magnetic poles on the finishing characteristics are large in internal finishing.

  • Various processes have been developed to improve the performance of the lubrication oil pump in a recent automobile industry. In particular, trochoidal profile has been widely used for the lubrication oil pump because it is easy to flow control and a lot of oil feed rate is obtained. Accuracy of the trochoidal profile as a core component of the lubricating oil pump affects the driving performance. So, it is necessary to develop efficient processing of the trochoidal profile. In this study, a machining process for the trochoidal profile is developed by turn-mill. Cutting force, surface roughness and tool wear were evaluated in accordance with machining conditions.

  • Recently, miniaturization and mass production are the main trends in manufacturing fields. Therefore, ultraprecision machining and MEMS technology have been taken more and more important position in machining of microparts. Micro endmilling is one of the prominent technology that has wide spectrum of application field ranging from macro parts to micro products, such as PDP and IT components, in precision products manufacturing. However, the deburring is significant problem in making smooth and precise parts in micro endmilling. This paper shows removal characteristics of burr generated by micro endmilling process. Additionally, it is necessary to understand the formation mechanism of burr of micro barrier ribs to find proper deburring method.

Micro-Hole Machining Using MEDM According to Machining Depth (미소구멍의 가공 깊이에 따른 미세방전 가공특성)

  • In order to make a deep and precise micro-hole, electrode wear and clearance between the electrode and the workpiece are important parameters using micro-electrical discharge machining. In this study, experiments were carried out to show the characteristics of electrode wear and radial clearance with respect to the depth of machined hole. Electrode wear varied with respect to the depth of hole. With deeper machined hole, bigger clearance was observed. Also it was found that the diameter of electrode influences machining characteristics of deep holes.

  • Micro-machining technology has been adopted for shape accuracy of micrometer and sub-micrometer scale, surface roughness of tens nanometer in industries. In micro-machining process the quality of machined surface is derived from machining condition and tooling. This paper investigates AE(acoustic emission) and cutting force signals according to machined surface quality related to machining condition. Machined surface quality was analyzed by the AE and cutting force parameter which reflect surface morphology. The characteristics of signal were extracted for process optimization by monitoring both the tool condition and the machined surface texture in micro end milling process.

  • From the experimental study of Wire-Cut EDM of die-material(SKD-11), machining characteristics such as machining rate, surface roughness and hardness have been observed and evaluated under the conditions varing pulse on time, pulse off time, peak voltage after fixing other conditions. It was found that various operating conditions have significant influences on machining rate, surface roughness. Hardness of workpiece was unaffected by operating conditions.

  • The ultra-precision machining is widely used for final machining process of precision parts, so in this study, mirror surface finishing systems using the micro abrasive film, one of ultra-precision machining method, have to examine mirror surface characteristics of the cylindrical workpiece(SM45) such as surface roughness, workpiece removal and evaluated under the condition varing film feed rate, applied pressure, grinding speed after fixing other condition. It was found that varrious machining condition have significant influences on workpiece removal, surface roughness.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of a developed micro grooving machine. Experiments have been conducted on the various grooving condition such as spindle revolution speed, feed rates and depth of groove. V and U-shaped blade tool and STD11 workpiece was used in this study. Evaluating the machining conditions, RMS and frequency spectrum analysis of AE(acoustic emission) signals according to each conditions were applied. As a result, this study presented the process to optimize micro grooving condition and possibility of application of AE technique in groove machining.
