기계번역 시스템 측정 장치 연구 (A Research on Test Suites for Machine Translation Systems.)

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a set of basic guidelines for the construction of English test suites, a set of basic guidelines for the construction of Korean test suites to objectively evaluate the performance of machine translation systems. For this end, we constructed 650 English test sentences, 650 Korean test sentences, and developed the statistical methods and tools for the comparative evaluation of the English-Korean machine translation systems. It also evaluates the existing commercial English-Korean machine translation systems. The importance of this research lies in that it will promote an awareness of the importance and need of testing machine translation systems within the Natural Language Community. This research will also make a big contribution to the development of evaluation methods and techniques for appropriate test suites for Korean information processing systems. The results of this research can be used by the natural language community to test the performance and development of their information processing systems or machine translation systems.

Customizing an English-Korean Machine Translation System for Patent Translation

  • This paper addresses a method for customizing an English-to-Korean machine translation system from general domain to patent domain. The customizing method consists of following steps: 1) linguistically studying about characteristics of patent documents, 2) extracting unknown words from large patent documents and constructing large bilingual terminology, 3) extracting and constructing the patent-specific translation patterns 4) customizing the translation engine modules of the existing general MT system according to linguistic study about characteristics of patent documents, and 5) evaluating the accuracy of translation modules and the translation quality. This research was performed under the auspices of the MIC (Ministry of Information and Communication) of Korean government during 2005-2006. The translation accuracy of the customized English-Korean patent translation system is 82.43% on the average in 5 patent fields (machinery, electronics, chemistry, medicine and computer) according to the evaluation of 7 professional human translators. In 2006, the patent MT system started an on-line patent MT service in IPAC (International Patent Assistance Center) under MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) in Korea. In 2007, KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) tries to launch an English-Korean patent MT service.

원리에 따른 한 / 일 기계번역 시스팀 : NARA (A Principle-based Korean / Japanese Machine Translation System : NARA)

  • This paper presents methodological and theoretical principles for constructing a machine thanslation system between Korean and Japanese. We focus our discussion on the real time computing problem of the machine translation system. This problem is characterized in the time and space complexity during the machine translation. The NARA system has the real time computing algorithm which is based on a mathematical model integrating the linguistic competence and the linguistic performance of both languages, with consequence that the system NARA has also the functional characteristic : the two-way translation mechanism.

A Satisfaction Survey on the Human Translation Outcomes and Machine Translation Post-Editing Outcomes

  • This cross-sectional survey research carried out with the inquisitive agenda on satisfaction of the translation outcomes as performed by human translation and (machine translation) post-editing. The survey group consisted of 166 Korean translators primarily working with the English, Chinese, and Japanese languages. They were asked to rate the satisfactory level with accuracy, fluency, idiomatic expression, and terminology in the Richter's scale of four. The result reveals that human translation is more satisfactory than post-editing with respect to accuracy, but it is uneasy to assert that accuracy is unsatisfactory in post-editing. On the other hand, the Korean translators are less satisfied with fluency, idiomatic expression, and terminology than accuracy. It can be assumed that although human translation is more satisfactory than post-editing, the accuracy of post-editing seems to be more acknowledged than fluency, idiomatic expression, and terminology, which lead the translators to take the accuracy of raw machine-translation products and to go on to improve the fluency, idiomatic expression, and terminology. Nevertheless, Korean translators believe Korean idiomatic expressions cannot be satisfactorily produced in post-editing, while fluency and terminology can be improved in post-editing.

Simultaneous neural machine translation with a reinforced attention mechanism

  • To translate in real time, a simultaneous translation system should determine when to stop reading source tokens and generate target tokens corresponding to a partial source sentence read up to that point. However, conventional attention-based neural machine translation (NMT) models cannot produce translations with adequate latency in online scenarios because they wait until a source sentence is completed to compute alignment between the source and target tokens. To address this issue, we propose a reinforced learning (RL)-based attention mechanism, the reinforced attention mechanism, which allows a neural translation model to jointly train the stopping criterion and a partial translation model. The proposed attention mechanism comprises two modules, one to ensure translation quality and the other to address latency. Different from previous RL-based simultaneous translation systems, which learn the stopping criterion from a fixed NMT model, the modules can be trained jointly with a novel reward function. In our experiments, the proposed model has better translation quality and comparable latency compared to previous models.

숫자 기호화를 통한 신경기계번역 성능 향상 (Symbolizing Numbers to Improve Neural Machine Translation)

  • 기계 학습의 발전은 인간만이 할 수 있었던 섬세한 작업들을 기계가 할 수 있도록 이끌었고, 이에 따라 많은 기업체들은 기계 학습 기반의 번역기를 출시하였다. 현재 상용화된 번역기들은 우수한 성능을 보이지만 숫자 번역에서 문제가 발생하는 것을 발견했다. 번역기들은번역할문장에 큰숫자가 있을경우종종숫자를잘못번역하며, 같은문장에서숫자만바꿔번역할 때문장의구조를 완전히바꾸어 번역하기도 한다. 이러한 문제점은오번역의 가능성을 높이기 때문에해결해야 될 사안으로여겨진다. 본 논문에서는 Bidirectional RNN (Recurrent Neural Network), LSTM (Long Short Term Memory networks), Attention mechanism을 적용한 Neural Machine Translation 모델을 사용하여 데이터 클렌징, 사전 크기 변경을 통한 모델 최적화를 진행 하였고, 최적화된 모델에 숫자 기호화 알고리즘을 적용하여 상기 문제점을 해결하는 번역 시스템을 구현하였다. 본논문은 데이터 클렌징 방법과 사전 크기 변경, 그리고 숫자 기호화 알고리즘에 대해 서술하였으며, BLEU score (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy score) 를 이용하여 각 모델의 성능을 비교하였다.

언어적 특성과 서비스를 고려한 딥러닝 기반 한국어 방언 기계번역 연구 (Deep Learning-based Korean Dialect Machine Translation Research Considering Linguistics Features and Service)

  • 본 논문은 방언 연구, 보존, 의사소통의 중요성을 바탕으로 소외될 수 있는 방언 사용자들을 위한 한국어 방언 기계번역 연구를 진행하였다. 사용한 방언 데이터는 최상위 행정구역을 기반으로 배포된 AIHUB 방언 데이터를 사용하였다. 방언 데이터를 바탕으로 Transformer 기반의 copy mechanism을 적용하여 방언 기계번역기의 성능 향상을 도모하는 모델링 연구와 모델 배포의 효율성을 도모하는 Many-to-one 기반의 방언 기계 번역기를 제안한다. 본 논문은 one-to-one 모델과 many-to-one 모델의 성능을 비교 분석하고 이를 다양한 언어학적 시각으로 분석하였다. 실험 결과 BLEU점수를 기준으로 본 논문이 제안하는 방법론을 적용한 one-to-one 기계번역기의 성능 향상과 many-to-one 기계번역기의 유의미한 성능을 도출하였다.

공공 한영 병렬 말뭉치를 이용한 기계번역 성능 향상 연구 (A Study on the Performance Improvement of Machine Translation Using Public Korean-English Parallel Corpus)

  • 기계번역이란 소스언어를 목적언어로 컴퓨터가 번역하는 소프트웨어를 의미하며 규칙기반, 통계기반 기계번역을 거쳐 최근에는 인공신경망 기반 기계번역에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 인공신경망 기계번역에서 중요한 요소 중 하나로 고품질의 병렬 말뭉치를 뽑을 수 있는데 이제까지 한국어 관련 언어쌍의 고품질 병렬 코퍼스를 구하기 쉽지 않은 실정이었다. 최근 한국정보화진흥원의 AI HUB에서 고품질의 160만 문장의 한-영 기계번역 병렬 말뭉치를 공개하였다. 이에 본 논문은 AI HUB에서 공개한 데이터 및 현재까지 가장 많이 쓰인 한-영 병렬 데이터인 OpenSubtitles와 성능 비교를 통해 각각의 데이터의 품질을 검증하고자 한다. 테스트 데이터로 한-영 기계번역 관련 공식 테스트셋인 IWSLT에서 공개한 테스트셋을 이용하여 보다 객관성을 확보하였다. 실험결과 동일한 테스트셋으로 실험한 기존의 한-영 기계번역 관련 논문들보다 좋은 성능을 보임을 알 수 있었으며 이를 통해 고품질 데이터의 중요성을 알 수 있었다.

Cyber Learners' Use and Perceptions of Online Machine Translation Tools

  • The current study investigated cyber learners' use and perceptions of online machine translation (MT) tools. The results show that learners use several MT tools frequently and extensively for various second language learning (L2) purposes according to their needs. The learners' overall perceptions of using MT for English learning were generally positive. The learners reported several advantages of machine translation: ease of use, helpful feedback, effective revision, and facilitation of self-directed learning. At the same time, a considerable number of learners were aware of MT's drawbacks, such as awkward sentences, inaccurate grammar, and inappropriate words, and thus held a negative or skeptical view on the quality and accuracy of MT. These findings have important pedagogical implications for using MT in the context of a cyber university. For successful integration of MT in English classes, teachers need to provide appropriate guidelines and training that will help learners use MT effectively.

연관성규칙을 이용한 사용자의 인지차이가 구매행동에 미치는 영향 분석 - 기계번역 프로그램 사용자를 중심으로 (An Analysis of the Effect of Cognitive Gaps on Purchasing Behavior Using Association Rules - Foucused on Users of Machine Translation Program)

  • So far, the evaluation of machine translation has used a numerical approach, but there is evidence that it is not sufficient to reflect the characteristics or behavior of machine translation users(Hutchins, 2007; Wu et al., 2016; Park et al., 2013). Therefore, this study focused on the purpose of use and purchasing behavior of machine translation users. At this time, the indirect comparison method introduced by Morgan and Hunt(1994) was used to measure cognitive gaps and analyze the purchasing behavior of users. According to the analysis of association rules using cognitive gaps, the smaller the cognitive gap, the more positive the purchase behavior. In addition, procedural knowledge derived from language knowledge is activated in situations involving responsibility, and in routine situations, procedural knowledge trained from pragmatic knowledge works.
