  • Recently reduction of industrial products in size and weight has been increased by application of micro-drills in gadgets of high precision and a great interest of a micro-drilling has been raised. Due to the lack of tool stiffness and the chip packing, the micro-drilling requires not only the robust tool structure which has not affected by vibration but also effective drilling methods designed to prevent tool fracture from cutting troubles. This paper presents an optimum design shape of a 0.15 mm micro-drill associated with a new manufacturing process to improve the production rate and to lengthen the tool life and suggestions on the micro-drilling characteristic properties associated with the tool life and workpiece quality.

  • Chatter is a relative vibration between workpiece and tool in machining of metals, and is an important limiting factor of production rate and surface quality, and also reduces the life of machine-tool itself and its tool. In this study, in order to suppress the machining chatter, the spring and the rubber damper are adopted to the tool post of a lathe. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows. 1. The spring and the damper employed in the tool post for the suppression of chatter increase the maximum chatter-free depth of cut and optimum values found for spring constant and compressive strain are 95kg/mm, 0.1954 respectively. 2. On the optimum condition resulting in this experimental study, the modified tool post increased 6 times in the maximum chatter-free depth of cut as compared with the conventional tool post.

  • The surface, generated by end milling operation, is deteriorated by tool runout, vibration, friction, tool deflection, etc. In many source, deflection of tool affects to surfave accuracy. To develop a surface accracy model, method for the prediction of the topography of machined surfaces has been developed based on models of machine tool kinematics and cutting tool geometry. This model accounts for not only the ideal geometrical surface, but also the deflection of tool resulted in cutting force. For the more accurate prediction of cutting force, flexible end mill model is used to simulate cutting process. Compute simu;ation have shown the feasibility of the surface generation system.

  • A tool holder system has been designed to measure cutting forces in diamond turning. This system includes a 3-component piezo-electric tranducer. In this research, tool holder system is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of structure is simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. In addition, tool holder system is verified by vibration test using accelerometer. This system will aid to the development of Fast Tool Servo.

  • As the most precision equipment requiring very strict vibration environment are vulnerable to the surrounding vibration condition, they adapt the passive or active vibration isolation system. When it comes to the passive isolation system, the resonance of the isolation system causes excessive resonance response, and finally results in the degrade the equipment performance. This paper deals with the active control method to control this resonance induced response, and includes the experiment on the active control for controlling the resonance response on the table against the excitation of the same frequency with the natural frequency of the isolation system. The electromagnetic actuator was designed and the control effect was verified by the experiment. The experiment showed that the electromagnetic actuator is effective for controlling the low frequency isolation resonance response of the precision equipment.

  • It is the first step to establish the exact vibration model of the structure when constructing the smart structure with desired vibration scheme. In this paper, vibration model of beam with piezoelectric element boned on the surface is presented by considering the thickness effect of the bond layer. In contrast to the previous papers which neglect the effect of bond layer, the presented vibration model considers the effect of bond layer assuming the prefect bond condition. The perfect bond condition is tested by comparing the controllability of beams with three types of bond layer. An optimal vibration control of the beam can be performed when there exists perfect-bond condition between the piezoelectric element and the main structure.

  • This study developes the vibration model to estimate the vibration energy of compact disc player's mainbase assembly which is supported by dampers and springs, and this model is verified by experiment. From frequency response function, we investigate the natural frequency and mode shape in the up/down direction for mainbase assembly. In order to determine the analysis frequency band, we investigate the excitation frequency of road from the vehicle test. As the characteristics of dampers and springs are changed, we carry out the sensitivity analysis of vibration energy for mainbase assembly which include optical pick-up and feeding system. And we found out that the properties of damper were dominant element in the vibration energy of mainbase assembly's CG(center of gravity).

  • Conventional cutting(CC) and Ultrasonic Vibration Cutting(UVC) of 20[KHz] are practised with standard lathe for fine ceramics(A1$_{2}$O$_{3}$. UVC is suggested to good cutting method for difficult-to-machine-materials and it is known to excellent cutting method to super precision cutting and elevation of productibility for general, nonferrous matals. In this research, main results to be obtained are as follows: 1. From the CC and UVC results by general lathe with sintering diamond tool, the surface roughness and roundness are improved in UVC. Also tool life is longer in UVC than CC. From the observation of machined surface, it is found that brittle fracutural material remove occured in fine ceramics cutting. 2. It is verified that the thrust force is the biggest in fine ceramics cutting, principal force is the next, and feed rate force the third and it is appear a little, on the other hand the principal force is the biggest in metal cutting, feed rate frece is the second, and thrust force is the next.
