Development of Micro-EDM Machine for Microshaft and Microhole Machining (미세 축ㆍ구멍 가공을 위한 미세방전가공기의 개발)

  • Recently, the needs of machining technologies of very small parts have been increasing with advent of micro-revolution. These technologies have mostly used the method applied to semi-conductor production process such as LIGA, etc. But they have serious difficulties to settle down in terms of workpiece materials, machining thickness, 3-dimensional structure. Therefore. mciro-machining technology using EDM(Electrical Discharge Machining) was proposed. It is very difficult to machine the micro-parts (microshaft, microhole) using conventional machining. Micro-machining using BDM can machine the micro-parts easily because it requires little machining force. This MEDM(Micro-EDM) need the capabilities to move a electrode and control a discharge energy precisely, and the gap control strategy to maintain the optimal discharge condition is necessary. Therefore, in this study, the new EDM machine with high precision motion stage and high-performance EDM device was developed. Using this MEDM machine, we have machined microshaft and microhole with various shapes and sizes.

Model Development for Machining Process Sequencing and Machine Tool Selection (가공 순서 결정과 기계 선택을 위한 모형 개발)

  • Traditionally, machining process sequence was influenced and constrained by the design information obtained from CAD data base, i.e., class of operations, geometric shape, tooling, geometric tolerance, etc. However, even though all the constraints from design information are considered, there may exist more than one way to feasibly machine parts. This research is focused on the integrated problem of operations sequencing and machine tools selection in the presence of the product mix and their production volumes. With the transitional costs among machining operations, the operation sequencing problem can be formulated as a well-known Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). The transitional cost between two operations is expressed as the sum of total machining time of the parts on a machine for the first operation and transportation time of the parts from the first machine to a machine for the second operation. Therefore, the operation sequencing problem formulated as TSP cannot be solved without transitional costs for all operation pairs. When solved separately or serially, their mutual optima cannot be guaranteed. Machining operations sequencing and machine tool selection problems are two core problems in process planning for discretely machined parts. In this paper, the interrelated two problems are integrated and analyzed, zero-one integer programming model for the integrated problem is formulated, and the solution methods are developed using a Tabu Search technique.

Thermal Stability of Amorphous Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn Prepared by Mechanical Alloying

  • Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn quaternary amorphous alloys of $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$, $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$, and $Ti_{50}Cu_{23}Ni_{20}Sn_7$ composition were prepared by mechanical alloying in a planetary high-energy ball-mill (AGO-2). The amorphization of all three alloys was found to set in after milling at 300rpm speed for 2h. A complete amorphization was observed for $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$ and $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$ after 30h and 20h of milling, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed that the thermal stability increased in the order of $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$, $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$, and $Ti_{50}Cu_{23}Ni_{20}Sn_7$.

  • In this work, effect of various process-control agents (PCAs) on the mechanical alloying of amorphous alloy of $Al_{85}Y_8Ni_5Co_2$ has been investigated. The dependence of the particle shape, size and crystallization behavior of the amorphous alloy powders on the type of PCAs and their concentrations was investigated by using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the additive of toluene could affect positively the amorphization and thermally induced crystallization processes, as well as the size refinement, morphology and particle-size distribution of as-milled powders in comparison with alloy obtained without PCA.

  • The needs of ultraprecision machine tools, which manufacture and machine the high precision parts used in computers, semiconductors and othe rprecise machines, have been increased recentrly. So it is important to design the driving parts of the ultraprecision machine tools which affect significantly on the performance of them. In this paper, the dynamic analyses on the belt-drive system were studied. The correlational equations between the acoustic natural frequency and the tension of belt were derived by experiments. The dynamic delections while the dynamic loads on the motor system changed were analyzed by the finite element analysis. The nonlinear characteristics of the bearings on the dynamic performance was studied and the belt connecting the motor to the spindle of a machine tool was modeled by the truss element and the beam element.

  • The machining Parts must be Produced within the specification of drawing and those will be able to meet faction and efficiency. At that time, it is very important not only precision machine and machining technique but also the measurement technique. So, the improvement of measurement technique is to be joined together at once with improvement of machining technique. Finally, the quality and value of the parts are decided by precision measurement. This paper aims to study on the measurement uncertainty when the machined parts are inspected with 3-dimensional coordinate measuring machine. The objectives remove an error of measurement and remove a quality of mass products.

  • Identifying linear form of the parts of precision machine, precise monitoring is indispensable. Therefore, in this study, close-range photogrammetry being tried to screw one of the parts of precision machine, using non-metric camera that is calibrated by plumb line method. Also, it is analyzed three dimensional values of tortien, offset, section and thickness. From results of this study, monitoring of the parts of precision machine was conducted efficiently using non-metric camera and possibility of this application was proved.

  • This paper analyses the tool switching problem in the dynamic environment, where parts to be processed on a flexible machine arrive randomly. As the total number of tools required to Process a set of parts on the machine is generally larger than the available magazine storage capacity, tool switches between parts are usually necessary. We assume that tool switching must be made just before the processing of the parts. Since the time required for tool switches can be significant relative to processing time and cause the processing of parts to be delayed, it is desirable to minimize the number of tool switches. Therefore, we present one heuristic algorithm to minimize the total number of tool switches and the t)reposed heuristic is compared with the KTNS (Keep Tool Needed Soonest) policy on randomly generated problems.
