  • The method of substructure synthesis o. component mode synthesis(CMS) provides an effective means of dynamic analysis of very large and/or complex structures. In this study, residual dynamic flexibility attachment modes in hybrid component mode synthesis are considered for the purpose of exactly compensating the effect of higher order truncated modes. Following this way, the analysis accuracy of the synthesized structure can be improved effectively with less computational effort. In order to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid component mode synthesis(HCMS), numerical experiments were carried out for the models of a clamped-clamped beam. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • An expert system is developed for rational and efficient design of multi-component injection molding which is a fairly new manufacturing technique to produce plastic parts by injecting two or more materials sequentially using multiple injection units in a single machine into a single rotary mold. The knowledge base used in the present design system is primarily composed of two parts ; knowledge from domain expert and knowledge from CAE analysis. The present expert system has hour main modules ; general design guidelines for injection molding specific guidelines for multi-component injection molding redesign guidelines from the result of the CAE analysis and finally troubleshooting for multi-component injection molding. To show the validity of the present design methodology two shop floor design problems were tested ; design and fabrication of timing belt cover and power window's assist knob by using multi-component injection molding.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the Compoglass Carvifil bonded on the dentin surface according to etching or non-etching and two time application or three time application of single component. Human non-carious 60 extracted 3rd molar were used. The occlusal dentin surfaces of all teeth were exposed with Diamond Wheel Saw and polished with Lapping & Polishing machine(South Bay Technology Co., U.S.A). The teeth were then distributed randomly into four groups of 15 teeth each and dentin surface were conditioned as following. Control group : Non-etching, two times application of Syntac Single Component. (According to manufacture's instruction) Experimental group 1 : Non-etching, three times application of Syntac Single Component. Experimental group : 2 Etching, two times application of Syntac Single Component. Experimental group 3 : Etching, three times application of Syntac Single Component. Compoglass were bonded to exposed dentin surfaces and all samples were placed in distilled water for 7 days. The shear bond strengths were measured by universal testing machine (SHIMADAZU AUTOGRAPH, AGS-4D., Japan). The results were as follows : 1. Experimental group 3 revealed the highest value (30.75${\pm}$4.74 MPa) and control group revealed the lowest value(14.85${\pm}$2.69 MPa). There was significant difference of shear bond strength among four groups(P<0.01) 2. The acid-etching groups (experimental group 2, 3) had higher shear bond strengths than non etching groups(control group and experimental group 1). 3. The additional application of Syntac single component groups revealed a higher bond strength than two times application groups (control group and experimental group 2).

  • This paper presents the fault diagnosis of induction motor based on support vector machine(SVMs). SVMs are well known as intelligent classifier with strong generalization ability. Application SVMs using kernel function is widely used for multi-class classification procedure. In this paper, the algorithm of SVMs will be combined with feature extraction and reduction using component analysis such as independent component analysis, principal component analysis and their kernel(KICA and KPCA). According to the result, component analysis is very useful to extract the useful features and to reduce the dimensionality of features so that the classification procedure in SVM can perform well. Moreover, this method is used to induction motor for faults detection based on vibration and current signals. The results show that this method can well classify and separate each condition of faults in induction motor based on experimental work.

  • Non-destructive methods such as rebound hardness method and ultrasonic method are widely studied for evaluating the physical properties, condition and damage of concrete, but are not suitable for detecting delamination and cracks near the surface due to various constraints of the site as well as the accuracy. Therefore, in this study, the impact resonance method was applied to detect the separation cracks occurring near the surface of the concrete slab and bridge deck. As a next step, the principal component analysis were performed by extracting various features using the FFT data. As a result of principal component analysis, it was analyzed that the reliability was high in distinguishing defects in concrete. This feature extraction and application of principal component analysis can be used as basic data for future use of machine learning technique for the better accuracy.

  • Unwanted vibrations are inevitably induced in other directions when pure unidirectional vibration motion is desired for the vertical scratching mechanism. Pure vertical vibration motion of the scratching machine can be obtained by driving identical two motors with symmetrically positioned eccentric unbalance masses. The desired optimal condition for driving pure vertical vibration for the scratching machine is assumed to be the resonance condition in that direction. Imposing the flexibility of the scratching machine in the horizontal direction, we can find out the amount of horizontal vibration component while maintaining the resonance in vertical direction. The desired stiffness in horizontal direction which produces the minimum vibration in horizontal direction are defined which can be used as a guide line to design the supporting structure of the scratching machine.

  • This paper presents a new approach for simulating the internal faults of synchronous machines using distributed computing and Large Change Sensitivity (LCS) analysis. LCS analysis caters for a parallel solution of 3-phase model of a faulted machine within the symmetrical component-based model of interconnected network. The proposed method considers dynamic behavior of the faulty machine and connected system and tries to accurately solve the synchronous machine’s internal fault conditions in the system. The proposed method is implemented in stand-alone FORTRAN-based phasor software and the results have been compared with available recordings from real networks and precisely simulated faults by use of the ATP/EMTP as a time domain software package. An encouraging correlation between the simulation results using proposed method, ATP simulation and measurements was observed and reported. The simplified approach also enables engineers to quickly investigate their particular cases with a reasonable precision.

  • A design methodology is applied for manufacturing a disk-brake piston component and a washing machine container. The design criteria are the limit drawing ratio and the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic FEM have been applied to simulate both of the conventional manufacturing processes, respectively, which include deep drawing and forging process. Simulations of one stage process from a selected stock to the final product shape are performed for generating information on additional requirements for metal flow. The best manufacturing processes are selected, which is using a hemispherical punch in the deep drawing process for both disk-brake piston component and washing machine container.

  • In general, the performance of a component degrades as time goes by and failure of a component occurs when the performance degradation reaches a pre-specified level. It is difficult to obtain the failure time distribution data or the necessary number of failure data especially for the metal or machine part. Thus, a design of reliability qualification test based on performance distribution is more effective than failure time distribution. In this study, a performance-based reliability qualification test is developed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the use of the developed reliability qualification test. This approach could be applied to many kinds of metal or machine part whose magnitude of strength could not be evaluated during at any random points but judgement can be made by only failure of the part. Besides, it is also possible that any parts which have a similar failure characteristics could be applicable to the developed reliability qualification test.
