  • The aim of the current study is to compare the performance of large 2 MW and 3 MW wind turbines operating on existing onshore wind farms using Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory and Angular Momentum (AM) theory and illustrate the performance characteristic curves of the turbines as a function of wind speed (U∞). To achieve this, the measurement data obtained from two different Wind Energy Power Plants (WEPPs) located in the Hatay region of Turkey was used. Two different horizontal-axis wind turbines with capacities of 2 MW and 3 MW were selected for evaluation and comparison. The hub-height wind speed (UD), turbine power output (P), atmospheric air temperature (Tatm) and turbine rotational speed (Ω) data were used in the evaluation of the turbine performance characteristics. Curves of turbine power output (P), axial flow induction factor (a), turbine rotational speed (Ω), turbine power coefficient (CP), blade tip speed ratio (λ), thrust force coefficient (CT) and thrust force (T) as a function of U∞ were obtained for the 2 MW and 3 MW wind turbines and these characteristic curves were compared. Results revealed that, for the same wind speed conditions, the higher-capacity wind turbine (3 MW) was operating at higher turbine power coefficient rates, while rotating at lower rotational speed ratios than the lower-capacity wind turbine (2 MW).

  • To maximize power generation and reduce the construction cost of a commercial utility-grade wind turbine, the size of the wind turbine should be large. The initial design of the 12 MW University of Ulsan(UOU) Floating Offshore Wind Turbine(FOWT) was carried out based on the 5 MW National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) offshore wind turbine model. The existing 5 MW NREL offshore wind turbines have been expanded to 12 MW UOU FOWT using the geometric law of similarity and then redesigned for each factor. The resonance of the tower is the most important dynamic responses of a wind turbine, and it should be designed by avoiding resonance due to cyclic load during turbine operations. The natural frequency of the tower needs to avoid being within the frequency range corresponding to the rotational speed of the blades, 1P, and the blade passing frequency, 3P. To avoid resonance, vibration can be reduced by modifying the stiffness or mass. The direct expansion of the 5 MW wind turbine support structure caused a resonance problem with the tower of the 12 MW FOWT and the tower length and diameter was adjusted to avoid a match of the first natural frequency and 3P excitation of the tower.

  • 5MW wind turbine is regarded as a promising system for offshore wind farms in the western sea of Korean. And the wind turbine is developed in many companies but not much information is known about it. In this study, aerodynamics and control characteristics depending on several control methods is reviewed on 5MW wind turbine, in which configuration data of the turbine are used from the previous study of NREL. For the calculations, GH_Bladed, which is certificated software by GL, is used and compared with data from FAST code of NREL. This study shows that how much power production, and aerodynamic performances and loads can be obtained with different controls in the operation of 5MW wind turbine, which is expected to be useful in the design of the wind turbine system.

  • The pitch control system in wind turbines becomes more and more important as the wind turbines are larger in multi-MW size. PI controller has been applied in most pitch controllers and it has been known that gain-scheduling is essential for pitch control of wind turbines. A demo model of 2 MW wind turbine which represents the whole dynamics of wind turbine including dynamic behaviors of blade, tower and rotational shaft is given in the commercial Bladed S/W for real wind turbines. In this paper, some results on step responses of the pitch PI controller and effectiveness of gain-scheduled pitch PI controller are presented through the Bladed S/W for the 2 MW wind turbine.

  • A multi-MW wind turbine is a huge mechanical structure, of which the rotor diameter is more or less than 100 m. Rotor blades experience unsymmetric mechanical loads caused by the interaction of incoming wind with the tower and wind shear effect. These mechanical loads are transferred to the entire structure of the wind turbine and are known as the major reasons for shortening the life span of the wind turbine. Therefore, as the size of wind turbine gets bigger, the mitigation of mechanical loads becomes more important issue in wind turbine control system design. In this paper, a concept of an individual pitch control(IPC), which minimizes the mechanical loads of rotor blades, is introduced, and simulation results using IPC are discussed.

  • Torque control methods of wind turbine are mainly classified into two methods: torque-mode and speed-mode methods. The traditional torque-mode method, in which generator torque proportional to square of generator speed is determined, has been chosen in many wind turbines but its response is slower as they are larger in multi-MW size. Torque control methods based on both speed-mode and torque-mode can be used to make response of wind turbine faster. In this paper, two torque control methods based on the traditional torque-mode method are applied to a 2.75 MW wind turbine. It is shown through some simulation results for real turbulence wind speeds that torque control method based on torque-mode has the merit of reducing fluctuations of generated power than PI controller based on speed-mode.

  • A PMSG in variable speed wind turbine needs to know the position of rotor for vector control. Since the position sensor has the disadvantage in terms of cost, complexity of the system, a sensorless algorithm is needed. The sensorless strategy using the back EMF estimation is used for PMSG Wind Turbine. This algorithm is comparatively easy to implement than other strategies. This paper introduces the application of stable sensorless control for 2MW direct drive PMSG. In order to confirm the sensorless algorithm, the implementation is proceeded using 2MW direct drive PMSG from no-load condition to full-load condition. To drive 2MW PMSG artificially, 2MW PMSG connected PMSG through the mechanical coupling.

  • The global performance of the 5 MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine in random waves with or without steady/dynamic winds is numerically simulated by using the turbine-floater-mooring fully coupled dynamic analysis program FAST-CHARM3D in time domain. The numerical simulations are based on the complete second-order diffraction/radiation potential formulations along with nonlinear viscous-drag force estimations at the body's instantaneous position. The sensitivity of hull motions and mooring dynamics with varying wave-kinematics extrapolation methods above MWL(mean-water level) and column drag coefficients is investigated. The effects of steady and dynamic winds are also illustrated. When dynamic wind is added to the irregular waves, it additionally introduces low-frequency wind loading and aerodynamic damping. The numerically simulated results for the 5 MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine by FAST-CHARM3D are also extensively compared with the DeepCWind model-test results by Technip/NREL/UMaine. Those numerical-simulation results have good correlation with experimental results for all the cases considered.

  • A comparison study between computational-fluid-dynamics simulation and wind tunnel test for a megawatt-class wind turbine is conducted. For the study, flow-field in wake, basic aerodynamic performance, and effect of the yaw error for a 1/86 scaled-down model of the NREL offshore 5 MW wind turbine are numerically calculated using commercial software "FloEFD" with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computed results are compared to the wind tunnel test performed by the constant-velocity mode for the model. It is shown that discrepancy are found between the two results at lower tip-speed ratio and higher yaw angle, however, the velocity-defection distribution in the wake, the torque coefficient at moderated and high tip-speed ratios are in good agreement with the wind tunnel test.

  • Idealized PID-controlled rotor-speed error for blade pitch control of wind turbines responds as a second-order system with natural frequency and damping ratio for closed-loop system. RISO National Laboratory has recommended specific natural frequency(=0.6 rad/s) and damping ratio(=0.7) for 2 MW wind turbine. The baseline controller for 5 MW wind turbine of NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) is designed based on the same values of RISO recommendation. This study investigates the effect of the natural frequency and damping ratio of the controller for NREL 5 MW wind turbine. It is confirmed that RISO recommendation shall be tuned for each wind turbine.
