  • The behavior of the flow about gas atomizers with a supersonic nozzle containing an under-expanded or over-expanded jet is very important with respect to performance and stability characteristics. Since detailed experiments are expensive, computational fluid mechanics have been applied recently to various relating flow field. In this study, a higher order upwind method with the 3rd order MUSCL type TVD scheme is used to solve the full Reynolds Wavier-Stokes equations. To delineate the purely exhaust jet effects, the melt flow is not considered. Comparison is made with some experimental data in terms of density fields. The influence of the exhaust-jet-to freestream pressure ratio and the effect of the protrusion length of the melt orifice are studied. The present study leads us to believe that the computational fluid mechanics should be considered as powerful tool in predicting the gas atomizer flows.

  • Three-dimensional structures of unsteady detonation wave propagating through a square-shaped tube is studied using computational method and parallel processing. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with variable-${\gamma}$ formulation and simplified one-step Arrhenius chemical reaction model were analysed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Results in three dimension show the two unsteady detonation wave propagating mode, the Rectangular and diagonal mode of detonation wave instabilities. Two different modes of instability showed the same cell length but different cell width and the geometric similarities in smoked-foil record.

  • The effects of nonequilibrium condensation on the shock boundary layer interaction over a transonic bump model were investigated experimentally and numerically. An experiment was conducted using a supersonic indraft wind tunnel. A droplet growth equation was incorporated into two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations were carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. Computations compared with the experimental results. Nonequilibirum condensation suppressed the boundary layer separation and the pressure fluctuations due to the shock boundary layer interaction. Especially the nonequilibrium condensation was helpful to suppress the high frequency components of the pressure fluctuations.

  • A computational study is performed to clarify the characteristics of supersonic moist air jet issuing from a simple sonic nozzle. The effects of the initial supersaturation on the Mach disk diameter and location, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary structures are investigated in details. The axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with droplet growth equation, are solved using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme. It is found that the Mach disk diameter increases with an increase in relative humidity of moist air. while its location is not significantly dependent on the relative humidity. As the relative humidity increases, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary are more expanded due to the local static pressure rise of nonequilibrium condensation.

  • Three-dimensional numerical study was carried out for the investigation of the detonation wave structures propagating in tubes. Fluid dynamics equations and conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The variable gas properties between unburned and burned states were considered by using variable specific heat ratio formulation. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of rectangular and diagonal mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting same cell length but different cell width in smoked-foil record. The results for the small reaction constant shows the spinning mode of three-dimensional detonation wave dynamics, which was rarely observed in the previous numerical simulation of the detonation waves.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out on recirculation zone formed downstream of a compressible flow over a backward facing step. The study has been performed by solving Two-Dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The system of governing equations has been solved, using an explicit Harten-Yee Non- MUSCL Modified flux type TVD scheme and a zero-equation algebraic turbulence model to calculate the eddy viscosity coefficient. The recirculation region dimensions are characterized over a range of Mach numbers of fixed step height 5mmThe detail of recirculation zone such as pressure, temperature, recirculation length, strength etc are reported. The variations of these characteristics due to change of Mach number are also presented.

Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record.

  • A comprehensive numerical analysis has been carried out for both non-reacting and reacting flows in a scramjet engine combustor with and without a cavity. The theoretical formulation treats the complete conservation equations of chemically reacting flows with finite-rate chemistry of hydrogen-air. Turbulence closure is achieved by means of a k-$\omega$ two-equation model. The governing equations are discretized using a MUSCL-type TVD scheme, and temporally integrated by a second-order accurate implicit scheme. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel/air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous studies. In particular, the oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the .underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only to the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flow-field. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.

  • High-speed moist air or steam flow has long been of important subject in engineering and industrial applications. Of many complicated gas dynamics problems involved in moist air flows, the most challenging task is to understand the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon when the moist air rapidly expands through a flow device. Many theoretical and experimental studies using supersonic wind tunnels have devoted to the understanding of the nonequilibrium condensation flow physics so far. However, the nonequilibrium condensation can be also generated in the subsonic flows induced by the unsteady expansion waves in shock tube. The major flow physics of the nonequilibrium condensation in this application may be different from those obtained in the supersonic wind tunnels. In the current study, the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon caused by the unsteady expansion waves in a shock tube is analyzed by using the two-dimensional, unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation. The third-order TVD MUSCL scheme is applied to solve the governing equation systems. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air in shock tube is investigated in details. The results show that the major characteristics of the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon in shock tube are very different from those in the supersonic wind tunnels.
