  • To investigate the restoration procedure on soil physical properties and vegetation at the surface of strip road affected by timber harvesting operation. This study was carried out at strip roads constructed between 1989 and 1994 in Mt. Baekun, Kwangyang, Chollanam-Do. Soil hardness of the surface layer was improved with change of time after strip road construction, but that of 7.6~15 cm depth from the surface was not improved. According to linear regression analysis, it was estimated 16.6 years in 0~7.5 cm and 16.9 years in 7.6~15 cm soil depth to be restored to natural forest lands. The amount of surface soil erosion was 0.045$m^3$/km/yr on strip roads constructed in 1989 and 1990, and road constructed in 1994 showed the highest value (4.5$m^3$/km/yr). Vegetation coverage rates of road surface were 96.7% in strip roads constructed in 1990. Those of cutslope and fillslope were highest in roads constructed in 1990. The results indicated that strip roads were restored with change of time after road construction.

  • Community structure and habitat characteristics of Acer mono stands were studied in Mt. Giri $(127{\circ}35'E.,\;35{\circ}18'N)$ and Mt. $Baekun(127{\circ}38'E.,\;35{\circ}05'N)$. The vegetation was investigated by the Braun-Blanquet's phytosociological method. Distribution of Acev mono was most abundant on eastern and western slopes in valley side. The community structure was composed of 4 layers and average number of species appeared in each quadrat was 24. Habitats were almost covered with exposed rocks and the surface soil was classified to clay loam. The isothermal date lines of Mt. Giri and Baekun were 130 and 120 days, respectively, which is the number of days with mean daily minimum temperature below zero during the year. The daily range of temperature was compared at 4 regions during sap extraction.

  • Using GJS and fuzzy sets, a model was developed for evaluating the site-suitability of forest stands for extracting sap of Acer pictum Thunb. var. mono in Mt. Baekun area. In the model, the productivity of sap extraction was expressed as the function of biotic and abiotic site factors. Among the factors, the topographic terrain conditions and accessibility of forest stands were chosen to consider working environment of the sap extraction. The difference in measurements of the factors between sap-extraction and non-sap-extraction forest stands was used in determining the weight of the relative importance for sap extraction productivity. The weight for distance-to-stream, vegetation type and shading condition turned out relatively higher than those for tree age, distance-to-road and DBH. Based on the results, a site-suitability map in Mt. Baekun area for sap extraction was built.

  • In this study, we derived the wind speed at 50 m and 80 m above sea level from 567 stations over a period of 1 year and correlated to measured wind speed at 5 radiosonde sites. From these correlations, we derived and analyzed the spatial distribution of wind map over Korea based on hourly observational data recorded over a period of 5 years from 2004 to 2008. As a results, wind speed is generally high over seashores, mountains, and islands. Mean wind speed over Korea at 50 and 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 seasonally are highest at Spring, and then followed by Winter, Fall, and Summer. In 76 (14%) stations, mean wind speed at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are greater than $5ms^{-1}$. The prevailing winds over Korea at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are North (44%), Northwest (16%), and West (15%). In 99 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 40%, and in 62 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 50%. In 178 station, the % of prevailing winds was higher than 30%, and there are 7 stations which also have wind speeds over $5ms^{-1}$, ranking from highest to lowest, Dongsong, Daegwallyeong, Baekun Mt., Hyangrobong Mt., Sorak Mt., Gosan, and Misiryeong Mt..
