  • This paper deals with the result of an analysis on the effect of the power generation by municipal solid waste(MSW)-refuse derived fuel(RDF) and the introduction of tipping fee sharing between RDF manufacturing and power generation project. As a model case for the MSW generated at small and medium cities in our country, an analysis of the RDF power generation and Tipping fee sharing shows that 1) MSW amount of 7,800* $10^3 $t/y could produce 1,950*$10^3$t/y of RDF 2) Electric power generated by MSW-RDF could supply 290,000 households/year and 98,548 C-t/y of $CO_2$ could be reduced. 3) Tipping Fee should be shared by the considering of the contents of project of both side between RDF Production and power generation.

  • As improving our standard of living, demographic change or industrial development, MSW that is closely linked to human behavior has been occurred much change. Notably, we usually have incinerated the combustible waste. In the process, they also emit a large amount of greenhouse gas that has directly affected the global warming and environmental pollution. Therefore, we need to make control system to manage future production and reduce generation of MSW. Thus this study analyzed the generation of MSW according to household members and floor area in apartment housing occupies the highest share. Then, we used both a correlation analysis and a regression analysis to make new estimation model of MSW generation. Based on this study, the results were used to suggest a method to efficiently handle MSW in the case of planning urban environment. Also, build a database to set up the integrated management system of MSW in the future.

  • Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the effects of food delivery service use frequency and the proportion of single-person households on the generation of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste). Additionally, the study analyzes MSW increase during the COVID-19 period. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses annual information on MSW and related characteristics of 228 Si, Gun, and Gu, which are administrative districts of Korea, from 2015 to 2020. Panel fixed effect model is employed for estimations. Findings - The study finds that food delivery and single-person household have significant effects only on recyclable and standard garbage bag MSW, respectively, not on all produce types of MSW. Additionally, it is estimated that, during the COVID-19 period, the increasing effect of food delivery is intensified while single-person households diminish its increasing effect. Lastly, the study confirms that the marginal effect on the increasing effect of MSW generation by the number of household members. Research implications or Originality - The estimated results are expected to provide useful information for the related policies. In particular, it is necessary to focus more on recyclable MSW concerning the developing delivery culture, and regarding changes in the family structure, focus more on the number of household members than single-person households.

  • This study analyzed the correlation between generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), number of tourists, and area of accommodation facilities of small island such as Shin, Si, Mo and Jangbong island in Ongjin county, Incheon for use as basic data for estimation of MSW generation. An analysis of statistics data from september in 2012 to august in 2018 showed MSW generation was steadily increasing, and MSW generation in 2018 was increased by about 3.98 times compared to 2012. In summer, which is the tourist season, MSW generation was 2.43~9.39 times higher than in winter. MSW generation was influenced by the number of tourists. As of August 2018, generation rate of per capita of MSW was $0.839kg/cap{\cdot}day$, which was about 3.71 times higher than August 2013. Area of accommodation increased continuously from 2008 to 2017, increasing by about 8.32 times. The coefficient of determination between the area of accommodation and the number of tourists was 0.8418. Also coefficient of determination between area of accommodation and MSW generation were 0.9370 and 0.6025 before and after August in 2015, respectively. Accommodation was lacked due to increase of tourists. Although accommodation was scarce because of increase in the number of tourists since 2015, the coefficient of determination decreased due to the increase in waste generation.

  • This study is proposing a System Dynamics Model for estimating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission from treating Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in South Korea for years 2000 to 2030. The government of country decided to decrease the total GHG emission from waste sector in 2030 as per Business-as-usual level. In context, four scenarios are generated to predict GHG emission from treating the MSW with three processes i.e., landfill, incineration and recycling. For prior step, MSW generation rate is projected for present and future case using population and waste generation per capita data. It is found that population and total MSW are directly correlated. The total population will increase to 56.27 million and total MSW will be 21.59 million tons in 2030. The methods for estimating GHG emission from landfill, incineration and recycling are adopted from IPCC, 2006 guidelines. The study indicates that Scenario 2 is best to adopt for decreasing the total GHG emission in future where recycling waste is increased to 75% and landfill waste is decreased to 7.6%. Lastly, it is concluded that choosing proper method for treating the MSW in country can result into savings of GHG emission.

  • The paper aims to characterise the waste generated in municipality of Varanasi, the most populated city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. MSW is a heterogeneous waste and composition of the waste varied from season to season. The generation, collection and management of waste have become a major environmental problem in most of the developing cities. MSW was collected from open dumping grounds for 2 consecutive years. Each year was classified into 3 seasons of 4 months. On analysis it was found that the biodegradable fraction is always more than other fractions with a minimum of 48.25% in rainy season. With such a high fraction of biodegradable wastes, options such as composting and biomethanation could be tried to convert waste into energy. The average weight of waste generation at present is 0.460 kg per capita per day. The study showed that waste generation and collection were increasing every year, which may be attributed to increase in population.

  • In this study, the physico chemical characteristic of MSW and sludge in west area of Kangwondo was investigated for database, managing the waste and waste treatment facility. The sampling sites were selected as 6 different MSW generation area and 2 sludge generation area. it is necessary to measure the characteristics of MSW to build the data-base. The year of 2000, 197.4ton/day of MSW which was generated in this area. This MSW was composed of 26.6% food wastes, 24.2% of papers, 22.8% of plastics & vinyls, 9.6% of textiles, 3.80% of wood, 2.8% of rubbers & leathers and others, respectively. Most of MSW are composed of food, paper and plastic waste and combustible waste is more than 89%. The generation of papers and vinyls are almost same for different seasons For 3-components of MSW, moisture is 40.2%, combustible component is 52.1% and ash is 7.7% and for 3-components of sludge, moisture is 83.3%, combustible component is 7.7% and ash is 9%. The chemical element has the high order of carbon(51.6%), oxygen(38.6%), hydrogen(7%) on the dry basis of wastes. And the high heating value of MSW is 4989.4 Kcal/kg sludge is 4428.04 Kcal/kg and low heating value of the MSW which is measured by calorimeter is 2032.88kcal/kg. From the leaching test of wastes, there is no heavy metals.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the generation rates, composition, propertion and lower heating values of each material in the municipal solid wastes(MSW) as well as the effect of landfill leachate on the environment in Taejon. The results are as follows: 1. The annual average generation rate of MSW in Taejon is approximately 1.7kg/c.d. 2. The weight percent of combustible matters is on average 80 and the lower heating value of MSW is measured to be more than 1,700 kcal/kg after removing the briquette component. 3. It is necessary for us to take a proper management system for leachate treatment in the landfill because it has many problems in the sewage and groundwater. 4. It is recommeded that MSW be treated by multiple methods such as the sanitary landfill, resources and recovery, composting and incineration.

  • Many cities and provinces are rapidly depleting landfill spaces. As the result, some municities have adopted to incinerate their municipal solid waste(MSW). The motive behind the choice is that incineration significantly reduces the volume of solid waste in need of disposal, destroys the harmful organic compounds that are present in MSW, and provides an attractive source of alternative energy. Conclusively, the generation of MSW ash is expected to increse in the furture. However, disposing the MSW ash in landfills may not always be an environmentally or an economically feasible solution. This paper addresses the various issues associated with MSW ash and its possible use in construction applications.
