A new semiactive control strategy for seismic response reduction using a neuro-controller and a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper is proposed. The proposed control system adopts a clipped algorithm which induces the MR damper to generate approximately the desired force. The improved neuro - controller, which was developed by employing the training algorithm based on a cost function and the sensitivity evaluation algorithm replacing an emulator neural network, produces the desired active control force, and then by using the clipped algorithm the appropriate command voltage is selected in order to cause the MR damper to generate the desired control force. The simulation results show that the proposed semiactive neuro-control algorithm is quite effective to reduce seismic responses. In addition, the semi-active control system using MR fluid dampers has many attractive features, such as the bounded-input, bounded-output stability and small energy requirements. The results of this investigation, therefore, indicate that the proposed semi-active neuro-control strategy using MR fluid dampers could be effectively used for control of seismically excited structures.
Small MR dampers with a simple structure were designed and manufactured. The Bingham model was used to represent the dynamic characteristics of the damper, and the parameters of the model were estimated from experimental data which were obtained by harmonic tests. The value of the estimated yield shear force remains positive when no electric current is applied, and it increases slowly with the current. The estimated viscous damping coefficient has a value close to zero when no electric current is applied, and it increases almost linearly with the current.
This paper proposes a GA-based optimal fuzzy control technique for the vibration control of earthquakeexcited adjacent structures interconnected with semi-active magneto-rheological(MR) dampers. Rule-based fuzzy logic controllers are designed first by implementing heuristic knowledge and the genetic algorithm(GA) is then introduced to optimally tune the fuzzy controllers for enhancing the seismic performance of semi-active control system. For practical implementation, the fuzzy controller simply uses locally measured responses of the dampers involved and directly returns the input voltage to the magneto-rheological dampers in real time through the fuzzy inference mechanism. The local measurement based fuzzy controller provides optimal damping force in a decentralized manner so that it does not require a primary central controller unlike the conventional semi-active control techniques. As a result, it can avoid the unbridgeable discrepancy between the desired control force and the actual damper force that may occur in the conventional control approaches. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed control method are shown numerically on two 20-story earthquake-excited buildings interconnected with MR dampers.
Stay cables, such as used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. It has been reported that a semiactive control system using MR dampers could potentially achieve both the better performance compared to a passive control system and the adaptability with few of the detractions. However, a control system including a power supply, a controller and sensors is required to improve the control performance of MR dampers. This complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures such as long-span bridges and high-rise buildings. This paper proposes a smart damping system which consists of an MR damper and the electromagnetic induction (EMI) part that is considered as an external power source to the MR damper. The control performance of the proposed damping system has been compared with that of the passive-type control systems employing an MR damper and a linear viscous damper.
MR damper is one of the most promising control devices for civil engineering applications to earthquake hazard mitigation. However, a control system including a power supply, controller, and sensors is required to maximize the performance of the MR damper and this complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures. This paper proposes and experimentally verified a smart passive damping system using MR(Magnetorheological) dampers by introducing electromagnetic induction(EMI) system as an external power source to MR damper. It is easy to build up and maintain EMI system, because it does not require any control system such as a power supply, controller, and sensors. Numerical simulations using experimental model of EMI system are carried to verify the effectiveness of the proposed EMI system. The performances of smart passive damping system are compared with those of passive and semiactive MR dampers.
A new linearization model for MR dampers is analyzed. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force model of MR damper can be modeled as a hyperbolic tangent function of currents, positions, and velicities, which is an algebraic function with constant parameters. Model parameters can be identified with numerical method using experimental force-velocity-position data obtained from various operating conditions. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force can be linearized with a given slope of damping coefficient if there exist corresponding currents to compensate for the nonlinearity. The corresponding currents can be calculated from the inverse model when the given linear damping force is set equal to the nonlinear hysteretic damping force. The linearization controller is realized in a DSP controller such that the corresponding currents to satisfy a given damping coefficient should be calculated. Experiments show that the current inputs to the MR damper produce linearized damping force with a given slope of the damping coefficient.

A semi-active mass damping (SMD) system with magnetorheological (MR) dampers focusing on low- and mid-rise buildings is proposed in this paper. The main purpose of this study is to integrate the reliable characteristics of the traditional tuned mass damper (TMD) and the superior performance of the active mass damper (AMD) to the new system. In addition, the commonly seen solution of deploying dense seismic dampers throughout the structure nowadays to protect the main structure is also expected to switch to the developed SMD system on the roof with a similar reduction performance. In order to demonstrate this concept, a full-size three-story steel building representing a typical mid-rise building was used as the benchmark structure to verify its performance in real life. A numerical model with the interpolation technique integrated was first established to accurately predict the behavior of the MR dampers. The success of the method was proven through a performance test of the designated MR damper used in this research. With the support of the MR damper model, a specific control algorithm using a continuous-optimal control concept was then developed to protect the main structure while the response of the semi-active mass damper is discarded. The theoretical analysis and the experimental verification from a shaking table test both demonstrated the superior mitigation ability of the method. The proposed SMD system has been demonstrated to be readily implemented in practice.
