MR 댐퍼의 최적설계 : 이론적 방법 및 유한요소 방법 (Optimal Design of MR Damper : Analytical Method and Finite Element Method)

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological(MR) damper based on analytical methodology and finite element analysis. The proposed MR damper consists of MR valve and gas chamber. The MR valve is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies geometric dimensions of the valve structure that maximize the pressure drop of the MR valve or damping force of the MR damper. In this work, the single-coil annular MR valve structure is considered. After describing the schematic configuration and operating principle of MR valve and damper, a quasi-static model is derived based on Bingham model of MR fluid. The magnetic circuit of the valve and damper is then analyzed by applying the Kirchoff' s law and magnetic flux conservation rule. Based on the quasi-static modeling and the magnetic circuit analysis, the optimization problem of the MR valve and damper is built. The optimal solution of the optimization problem of the MR valve structure constrained in a specific volume is then obtained and compared with the solution obtained from finite element method.

구조물의 진동제어를 위한 MR-damper의 최적 제어력 산정 (Calculating a MR Damper's Optimal Capacity for a Control of Structural Vibration)

  • In the case where a MR-damper is employed for vibration control, it is important to decide on how much control capacity should be assigned to it against structural capacities (strength and load, etc). This paper aims to present a MR-damper's control capacity suitable for the capacities of the structure which needs to be controlled. First, a two span bridge was built equipped with a MR-damper, which constitutes a two-span MR-damper control system. Then, inflicting an earthquake load on the system, a basic experiment was performed for vibration control, and a simulation was also carried out reflecting specific control conditions such as MR-damper and rubber bearing. The comparison of the results against each other proved their validity. Then, in order to calculate an optimal control capacity of the MR-damper, structural capacity was divided into eleven cases in total and simulated. For each case, an additional load of 30 KN was inflicted everytime, thereby increasingly strengthening structural capacity. As a result of the study, it was found that the control capacity of MR-damper of 30 KN was safely secured only with lumped mass of more than 150 KN(case 6). Therefore, it is concluded the MR-damper showed the best performance of control when it exerted its capacity at around 20% of structural capacity.

  • A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using MR fluid (MR valve) is proposed for fluid power control systems. The MR or Magneto-Rheololgical fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. The MR cylinder is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet. The differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. It has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. The size of MR cylinder and piston has ${\varphi}$60mm${\times}$259mm and ${\varphi}$58mm${\times}$136.5mm in face size respectively and 0.8mm in gap length. Through experiments on the static characteristics, it is found that the differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity under little influence of the flow rate, which corresponds to a pressure control valve. Effectiveness of the MR cylinder is demonstrated through the position control of one link MR manipulator.

  • 이 연구에서는 MR 브레이크를 이용하는 새로운 형태의 햅틱 그리퍼를 제안하였다. 이를 위하여, 다양한 형태의 MR 브레이크를 고려한 뒤, 각 MR 브레이크의 제동 토크와 점성 마찰토크를 빙햄 모델에 기반하여 분석하였다. MR 브레이크의 최적설계를 위해 유한요소법과 최적화 toolbox를 통합한 새로운 알고리즘이 고안되었으며, 점성 마찰토크는 필요 제동 토크보다 작도록 구속조건을 설정하였다. 이러한 최적 설계 알고리즘을 통하여 적절한 제동 토크를 시스템에 부하할 수 있으며 무게가 최소화된 MR 브레이크를 설계할 수 있었다. 그리고 최적 설계된 MR 브레이크의 성능 또한 고찰하였다.

  • Semiactive control systems have received considerable attention for protecting structures against natural hazards such as strong earthquakes and high winds, because they not only offer the reliability of passive control systems but also maintain the versatility and adaptability of fully active control systems. Among the many semiactive control devices, magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers comprise one particularly promising class. In the field of civil engineering, much research and development on MR fluid damper-based control systems has been conducted since B. F. Spencer first introduced this unique semiactive device to civil engineering applications in mid 1990s. In 2001, MR fluid dampers were applied to the full-scale in-service civil engineering structures for the first time. This state-of-the-art paper includes a detailed literature review of control algorithms considering the characteristics of fm fluid dampers. This review provides references to semiactive control systems using MR fluid dampers. The MR fluid damper-based semiactive control systems are shown to have the potential for mitigating the responses of full-scale civil engineering structures under natural hazards.

  • This paper presents vibration control performances of a commercial magnetorheological (MR) suspension via new control strategy considering hysteresis of the field-dependent damping force of MR damper. A commercial MR damper which is applicable to high class passenger vehicle is adopted and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. Preisach hysteresis model for the MR damper is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. Then, a feed-forward compensation strategy for the MR damper is formulated and integrated with a linear quadratic regulation (LQR) feedback controller for the suspension system. Control performances of the proposed control strategy for the MR suspension is experimentally evaluated with quarter vehicle test facility.

  • This paper is concerned with the experimental research of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The modulus of the MR elastomers can be controlled by an applied magnet field, so that it can be effectively used for vibration suppression applications. The MR elastomer in this experiment is a mixture of KE-1300 silicone, carbonyl iron powder (300mesh) and a silicone hardener (CAT-1300). Three specimens were manufactured and tested by using the vibration testing instruments. The magnetic field was generated by the permanent magnets. The experimental results show that the natural frequencies of the test article with MR elastomer changes by the applied magnetic field. The performance of the MR elastomer can be increased by stronger magnetic fields. This is under investigation.

  • This paper proposes a method for damping force modeling of magnetorheological (MR) damper featuring bypass hole. After describing configuration and of the MR damper, a damping force modeling of the MR damper is derived based on Bingham model of MR fluid. MR damper consists of piston, accumulator, gap, bypass hole and coil. Damping force is consists of spring force induced by accumulator, viscous force induced at gap and bypass hole, and controllable force induced at gap.

  • This paper presents optimal design procedures of mount based on a magnetorheological(MR) fluid to isolate the vibration in heavy diesel engine system. At first, frequency response and force-displacement transmissibility methods are used to get required damping force that is necessary for effective vibration isolation. From this result, a new type of high damping force engine mount is proposed and the governing equation of Bingham plastic behavior of MR fluid in flow path is mathematically derived under cylindrical coordinates. Finally, parametric design optimization featuring finite element is performed using ANSYS software to get the required damping force in MR mount system which can be used to reduce engine vibration. Damping force of the MR mount is then determined as an objective function in this analysis based on ANSYS. Furthermore, Magnetic analysis is then applied in this process.
