MPEG-D USAC: Unified Speech and Audio Coding Technology (MPEG-D USAC: 통합 음성 오디오 부호화 기술)

  • As mobile devices become multi-functional, and converge into a single platform, there is a strong need for a codec that is able to provide consistent quality for speech and music content MPEG-D USAC standardization activities started at the 82nd MPEG meeting with a CfP and approved WD3 at the 88th MPEG meeting. MPEG-D USAC is converged technology of AMR-WB+ and HE-AAC V2. Specifically, USAC utilizes three core codecs (AAC ACELP and TCX) for low frequency regions, SBR for high frequency regions and the MPEG Surround tool for stereo information. USAC can provide consistent sound quality for both speech and music content and can be applied to various applications such as multi-media download to mobile device Digital radio Mobile TV and audio books.

  • MPEG 비디오 그룹은 MPEG-I 표준의 일부로 포인트 클라우드(Point Cloud) 압축을 위한 비디오 기반 포인트 클라우드 부호화(V-PCC)와 몰입형(immersive) 비디오 압축을 위한 MPEG Immersive Video(MIV) 표준을 개발하고 있다. 최근에는 포인트 클라우드 및 몰입형 비디오와 같은 체적형(volumetric) 비디오를 모두 압축할 수 있도록 V-PCC 와 MIV 를 통합한 V3C(Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding) 표준화를 진행하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 V3C 코덱을 사용한 3DoF+(3 Degree of Freedom plus) 비디오 부호화 방안을 분석한다. 또한 V3C 코덱의 2D 코덱으로 기존 HEVC 대신 VVC 를 사용할 경우의 부호화 성능 향상을 분석한다.

  • In this paper, we proposed an improved method on the picture order of coding (POC) of MPEG-5 Essential video Coding (EVC) encoder to support a short intra period for Video-based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC). As a codec-agnostically designed standard, V-PCC claimed to be able to work with a lot of codecs. Current EVC test model software shows that the baseline profile could not provide appropriate POC calculation. The proposed method offers a solution to this POC-related problem and provides up to 44.6% coding grains for EVC based V-PCC.

  • 본 고에서는 최근 국제표준으로 완성된 MPEG Video-based Point Cloud Compression(V-PCC) 표준 기술에 대해 소개하고자 한다. AR/VR 등 새로운 미디어 응용의 출현과 함께 그 관심이 3D 그래픽 데이터에 더 많이 모아지는 가운데, 지금까지는 효율적인 압축에 관심이 높지 않았던 포인트 클라우드 데이터의 표준 압축 기술로 만들어진 V-PCC 표준의 표준화 현황과 주요 응용분야, 그리고 주요 압축 기술에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.

  • 최근 사용자에게 더욱 몰입감 있는 콘텐츠를 제공하기 위한 기술에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있으며 기존의 2D 콘텐츠와는 다른 새로운 방식인 3D 콘텐츠에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으며 그 중 가장 대표적인 것이 Point Cloud 영상이라고 할 수 있다. Point Cloud의 경우 수많은 3차원 좌표를 가진 점들로 구성되어 있으며 각 점들마다 Attribute 값을 이용하여 색상 등의 표현이 가능한 구조로 이루어져 있다. 이러한 특성 때문에 Point Cloud 데이터는 방대한 용량을 가지고 있으며 기존의 2D 방식과 데이터 구조가 상이하기 때문에 새로운 압축 표준이 요구되었다. 이에 미디어 표준화 단체인 MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group)에서는 MPEG-I(Immersive) 차세대 프로젝트 그룹을 이용하여 이러한 움직임에 대응하고 있다. MPEG-I의 part 5(Video-based Point Cloud Compression, V-PCC)에서는 객체를 대상으로 하여 기존의 비디오 코덱을 활용한 Point Cloud 압축 표준화를 진행중이다. V-PCC 데이터의 경우 기존의 2D 영상 데이터와 같이 전송을 통해 소비될 가능성이 아주 높기 때문에 이에 대한 고려가 필요하다. 현재 MPEG에서 표준화를 완료한 MMT(MPEG Media Transport)라는 전송 표준이 존재하기 때문에 이 기술을 활용 가능할 것으로 보인다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 Point Cloud 데이터를 압축한 V-PCC 데이터를 전송 표준 방식인 MMT를 이용하여 전송하는 방안에 대하여 제안한다.

  • 최근 디바이스와 5G 통신의 비약적인 발전을 통해 가상/증강 현실 분야, 자율 주행 등 3차원 그래픽스 기술에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있으며, 3차원 정보를 면밀하게 표현할 수 있는 포인트 클라우드와 다시점 초실감 콘텐츠가 주목받고 있다. 이와 같은 콘텐츠는 전통적인 2D 비디오 대비 많은 데이터를 사용하고 있기에, 효율적 사용을 위해서는 압축이 필수적으로 요구된다. 이에 따라 국제표준화기구인 ISO/IEC 산하 Moving Picture Expert Group(MPEG)에서는 고밀도 포인트 클라우드 및 초다시점 실감형 콘텐츠에 대한 압축 방안으로 V-PCC(Video based Point Cloud Compression) 및 MIV(MPEG Immersive Video) 기술을 표준화 중에 있으며, 또한, 압축된 데이터를 효율적으로 저장, 전송하기 위한 방안으로 Carriage of Visual Volumetric Video Coding(V3C) 표준화가 진행중에 있다. 본 고에서는 MPEG에서 진행중인 V3C 표준 기술에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.

Olfactory Interaction based on ISO/IEC 23005 Standard

  • Realistic media comprised of metadata of the five senses to provide enhanced experiences by stimulating our memory and sensations have had an increasingly pervading effect in our daily lives. Many researchers and companies are in the process of developing their own authoring systems running on different platforms to serve realistic media, resulting in compatibility issues among the systems. To tackle these issues, the International Organization for Standardization have standardized the interface, data format, protocol, API, etc. required to provide the realistic media. In particular, the ISO/IEC 23005 standard, which is called MPEG-V in SC29/WG 11, has defined XML schemas for olfaction interaction based on electronic nose (E-Nose), and scent display. In this paper, the MPEG-V standard for olfaction interaction is reviewed, and a data flow diagram that can be used for olfactory interaction based on the MPEG-V standard was designed. In addition, the necessary schemas related to the E-Nose sensor for olfactory interaction was provided.

Core Experiments for Standardization of Internet of Media Things (미디어사물인터넷의 국제표준화를 위한 핵심 실험)

  • Recently, due to the development of network environment, the internet market has been expanding, so it is necessary to standardize the data format and API to exchange information among objects. Therefore, MPEG (Moving Picture Expert Group), an international standardization organization, is establishing the MPEG-IoMT (ISO/IEC 23093) project to standardize the Internet of Things. MPEG-IoMT establishes Core Experiment (CE) and discusses overall data exchange such as data exchange procedure, markup language and communication method. In this paper, core experiments 1, 2, 4, and 5 of the core experiments of MPEG-IoMT will be discussed. The performance information of the sensor, the sensor data, the performance information of the driver, and the exchange procedure of the control command are explained and the exchange of the media additional data is discussed. We compare the markup language and communication method through experiment.

Specifically, USAC utilizes three core codecs (AAC, ACELP, and TCX) for low frequency regions, SBR for high frequency regions, the MPEG Surround for stereo information, and window transition technology for smoothing transition between various core coder. USAC can provide consistent sound quality for both speech and music contents and can be applied to various applications such as multi-media download to mobile devices, digital radio, mobile TV and audio books.

Transport Overhead Analysis in Terrestrial UHD Broadcast A/V Stream (지상파 UHD 방송 AV 스트림 오버헤드 분석)

  • This paper compares transport overhead of MPEG-2 TS, MMT and ROUTE in order to compare transport efficiency between the DTV and UHDTV. The MPEG-2 TS standard, widely used, was established for multiplexing and synchronizing encoded audio and video, additional information. In recent years, MMT and ROUTE was established as a next generation multimedia transport standard for the new broadcasting communication environment. In this paper, we compare and analyze transport overhead about three protocol. In order to analysis, we captured the UHD A/V stream in real-time broadcasting service using ROUTE and MMT, and we calculated and analyzed transport overhead using the overhead analysis program which was developed in our laboratory. Furthermore, for comparison under the same conditions, we assumed the MPEG-2 TS stream by extracting ES of UHD A/V stream based on the DTV standard. In this paper, we show the results of protocol transport efficiency in case of basic A/V stream except for additional services. And result show that MMT and ROUTE have similar overhead and MPEG-2 TS is relatively small overhead. However, since MPEG-2 TS result does not consider null packets, it is expected that the relative overhead difference will be reduced.
