  • 영상 정보의 발전으로 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스를 가능하게 하였고 네트워크와 IT의 발전으로 사용자가 풍부한 정보를 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였다. 이러한 동영상과 정지영상의 많은 정보를 압축하는 여러 방식 중에서 디지털 비디오 압축 관련 국제 표준안 중 MPEG-4와 H.264가 발표되었다. 유연성이 좋은 MPEG-4와 달리 H.264는 비디오 프레임의 효율적인 압축과 신뢰성을 강조 한다. 특히 H.264의 압축 기술은 HDTV처럼 큰 영상 뿐 아니라 카메라폰이나 DMB등의 특히 작은 크기의 영상에서 고품질의 영상을 보다 효율적으로 제공 한다. 본 논문은 기존의 동영상 압축 표준에 비하여 높은 압축성능과 유연성의 장점을 가지고 있고 표준 H.264/AVC에서 공간적 예측을 사용하여 비디오 프레임을 압축하는 방법인 Intra coding 에서 사용하는 여러 모드 중 4*4 예측모드를 연구하여 C언어를 이용한 최적화된 시뮬레이션과 Intra coding decoder의 성능평가를 통한 최적화를 실시하였고, 최적화된 예측 정보를 바탕으로 Intra coding decoder를 VHDL언어를 이용하여 하드웨어로 구현하였다.

Fast Motion Estimation Algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264 Transcoder

  • In this paper, we propose a fast ME (motion estimation) algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264 Transcoder. Whereas 2 modes ($8{\times}8$, $16{\times}16$) are used for ME in MPEG-4 simple profile, ME using 7 modes is supported for further enhanced coding efficiency in H.264. The transcoding speed is affected dominantly by the computational complexity of encoder part in transcoder, where ME module of H.264 encoder has high complexity due to using 7 modes. In order to increase the speed of transcoding between MPEG-4 and H.264, we use 3 PMVs (predicted motion vectors) and the mode information of MBs (macroblocks) provided from the decoder part of transcoder. Since the proposed 3 PMVs are very close to an optimal motion vector, and we consider only some restricted modes according to the MB information transferred from decoder part, the proposed scheme can speed up the transcoding procedure without loss of image quality. We show experimental results which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, where performance of our scheme is compared with that of the conventional fast algorithm for H.264.

DSP real-time implementation of the MPEG-I Layer 3 decoder using $OakDSPCore^{\circledR}$ ($OakDSPCore^{\circledR}$를 애용한 MPEG-I Layer 3 decoder 의 DSP 실시간 구현)

  • 본 논문에서는 국제 표준화기구(ISO) 산하의 동영상 전문가 그룹(MPEG)의 오디오 압축방법들중 하나인 MPEG-I layer 3 의 복호화기를 고정 소수점으로 변환한 후, $OakDSPCore^{\circledR}$를 기반으로 전 과정을 어셈블리어로 실시간 구현하였다. 실시간 구현에 사용된 $OakDSPCore^{\circledR}$는 DSP Group사에서 개발된 저전력 소비형 16-비트 고정 소수점 DSPCore로서 40MIPS의 성능을 가지고 있으며, 음성/오디오, 통신, 디지털 셀룰라폰 같은 소비자의 맞게 ASIC화할 수 있는 장점을 가지고 있다. 구현된 MP3 복호화기는 약33 MIPS의 복잡도를 나타내며, 사용된 메모리양은 프로그램 ROM 3.1K words, 데이터 ROM(table) 10.82K words 및 ROM 6.1K words이다. 구현된 MP3 복호화기는 OMNI-MEDIASOUND에서 제공하는 4개의 test 벡터들을 bit-exact하게 통과하였다.

Low-Complexity MPEG-4 Shape Encoding towards Realtime Object-Based Applications

  • Although frame-based MPEG-4 video services have been successfully deployed since 2000, MPEG-4 video coding is now facing great competition in becoming a dominant player in the market. Object-based coding is one of the key functionalities of MPEG-4 video coding. Real-time object-based video encoding is also important for multimedia broadcasting for the near future. Object-based video services using MPEG-4 have not yet made a successful debut due to several reasons. One of the critical problems is the coding complexity of object-based video coding over frame-based video coding. Since a video object is described with an arbitrary shape, the bitstream contains not only motion and texture data but also shape data. This has introduced additional complexity to the decoder side as well as to the encoder side. In this paper, we have analyzed the current MPEG-4 video encoding tools and proposed efficient coding technologies that reduce the complexity of the encoder. Using the proposed coding schemes, we have obtained a 56 percent reduction in shape-coding complexity over the MPEG-4 video reference software (Microsoft version, 2000 edition).

  • MPEG-2 AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) is the most advanced coding scheme available for high quality audio coding. This MPEG-2 AAC audio Standard allows for ITU-R ‘indistinguishable’ quality according to at data rates of 320 kb/s for five full-bandwidth channel audio signals. The compression ratio is around a factor of 1.4 better compared to MPEG Layer 3, you get the same quality at 70% of the bitrate. This paper suggest optimization method for MDCT/IMDCT (Modified Discrete Cosine Transform/Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) in Encoder and Decoder for AAC.

  • An MPEG-2 AAC Huffman decoding method based on the fixed length compacted codeword tables, where each codeword can contain multiple number of Huffman codes, was proposed. The proposed method enhances the searching efficiency by finding multiple symbols in a single search, i.e., a direct memory reading of the compacted codeword table. The memory usage is significantly saved by separately handling the Huffman codes that exceed the length of the compacted codewords. The trade-off relation between the computational complexity and the amount of memory usage was analytically derived to find the proper codeword length of the compacted codewords for the design of MPEG-2 AAC decoder. To validate the proposed algorithm, its performance was experimentally evaluated with an implemented MPEG-2 AAC decoder. The results showed that the computational complexity of the proposed method is reduced to 54% of that of the most up-to-date method.

Static Conformance Test of MPEG-4 Visual Decoders Using Test Bitstreams (시험 비트열을 이용한 MPEG-4 텍스처 디코딩의 정적 Conformance Test)

  • MPEG-4 visual conformance standard specifies methods to verify whether bitstreams and decoders meet the requirements at the specified profile and level. The test of decoders can be divided into two parts: the static test and the dynamic test. The static test can be performed by examining the decoder output with that of a reference decoder. This paper proposes design methods of test bitstreams for static test of texture decoding, and shows the test results.

  • This paper deals with FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) implementation of the AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) decoder. On modern computer culture, according to the high quality data is required in multimedia systems area such as CD, DAT(Digital Audio Tape) and modem. So, the technology of data compression far data transmission is necessity now. MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) would be a standard of those technology. MPEG-2 AAC is the availableness and ITU-R advanced coding scheme far high quality audio coding. This MPEG-2 AAC audio standard allows ITU-R 'indistinguishable' quality according to at data rates of 320 Kbit/sec for five full-bandwidth channel audio signals. The compression ratio is around a factor of 1.4 better compared to MPEG Layer-III, it gets the same quality at 70% of the titrate. In this paper, for a real time processing MPEG2 AAC decoding, it is implemented on FPGA chip. The architecture designed is composed of general DSP(Digital Signal Processor). And the Processor designed is coded using VHDL language. The verification is operated with the simulator of C language programmed and ECAD tool.

A Real-Time Multiple Circular Buffer Model for Streaming MPEG-4 Media (MPEG-4 미디어 스트리밍에 적합한 실시간형 다중원형버퍼 모델)

  • MPEG-4 is a standard for multimedia applications and provides a set of technologies to satisfy the needs of authors, service providers and end users alike. In this paper, we suggest a Real-time Multiple Circular Buffer (M4RM Buffer) model, which is suitable for streaming these MPEG-4 contents efficiently. M4RM buffer generates each structure of the buffer, which matches well with each object composing an MPEG-4 content, according to the transferred information, and manipulates multiple read/write operations only by its reference. It divides the decoder buffer and the composition buffer, which are described in the standard, by the unit of frame allocated to minimize the range of access. This buffer unit of a frame is allocated according to the object description. Also, it processes the objects synchronization within the buffer and provides APIs for an efficient buffer management to process the real-time user events. Based on the performance evaluation, we show that M4RM buffer model decreases the waiting time in a buffer frame, and so allows the real-time streaming of an MPEG-4 content using the smaller size of the memory block than IM1-2D and Window Media Player.

An Efficient Hardware Architecture of Intra Prediction in H.264/AVC Decoder (H.264/AVC 디코더용 인트라 예측기의 효율적인 하드웨어 구현)

  • H.264/AVC is the upcoming video coding standard of ITU-T H.264 and ISO MPEG-4 AVC. The new standard can achieve a significant improvement up to 50% in compression ratio compared to MPEG-4 advanced simple profile. In this paper, we propose the novel intra prediction scheme to speed up intra prediction process in H.264/AVC decoder and show the hardware architecture for it. The proposed scheme uses the concurrent processing of the 4$\times$4 intra prediction, which is based on that some 4$\times$4 block pairs in a 16$\times$16 luma block can be processed concurrently. The proposed scheme can reduce intra prediction time by 33 %.
