A Cross-Layer based Video Transmission Scheme using Efficient Bandwidth Estimation in IEEE 802.11e EDCA (IEEE 802.11e EDCA에서 효율적인 대역폭 측정을 통한 Cross-Layer 기반의 비디오 전송 기법)

  • Promoting quality of streaming service in wireless networks has attracted intensive research over the years. Instable wireless channel condition causes high transmission delay and packet loss, due to fading and interference. Therefore, they lead to degrade quality of video streaming service. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group is currently working on a new standard called IEEE 802.11e to support quality of service in WLANs. And several schemes were proposed in order to guarantee QoS. However, they are not adaptable to network condition. Accordingly, they suffered video quality degradation, due to buffer overflow or packet loss. In this paper, to promote quality of video streaming service in WLANs, we propose a cross-layer architecture based on IEEE 802.11e EDCA model. Our cross-layer architecture provides differentiated transmission mechanism of IEEE 802.11e EDCA based on priority of MPEG-4 video frames and adaptively controls the transmission rate by dropping video frames through the efficient bandwidth estimation based on distinction of each AC. Through the simulation, proposed scheme is shown to be able to improve end-to-end qualify for video streaming service in WLANs.

  • The 2-D discrete cosine transform (DCT) is an integral part of video and image processing; it is used in both the PEG and MPEG enciding standards. As streaming video is brought to mobile devices, it becomes important that it is possible to calculate the DCT in an energy-efficient manner. In this paper, we present a new algorithm the DCT with a linear array PEs. This design is optimized for energy efficiency. We analyze the energy, area, and latency tradeoffs available with this design and then compare its energy dissipation, area, and latency to those of Xilinx's optimized IP core.

  • In Mobile IP-enabled wireless LAN (WLAN), packet flows are corrupted due to the handoff of a mobile node (MN) at the link and network layers, which results in burst packet losses and can cause temporary buffer underflow in a streaming client at the MN. This transient behavior hurts time-sensitive streaming media applications severely. Among many suggestions to address this handoff problem, few studies are concerned with empirical issues regarding the practical validation of handoff options on the time-sensitive streaming media applications. In this paper, targeting seamless streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN, we introduce a seamless media streaming framework that estimates accurate pre-buffering level to compensate the handoff latency. In addition, we propose a link-layer (L2) assisted seamless media streaming system as a preliminary version of this framework. The proposed system is designed to reduce the handoff latency and to overcome the playback disruption from an implementation viewpoint. A packet buffering and forwarding mechanism with L2 trigger is implemented to reduce the handoff latency and to eliminate burst packet losses generated during the handoff. A pre-buffering adjustment is also performed to compensate the handoff latency. The experimental results show that the proposed approach eliminates packet losses during the handoff and thus verify the feasibility of seamless media streaming over Mobile IP-enabled WLAN.

  • Most Embedded Web Camera Server products currently deployed on the market adopt JPEG for compression of video data continuously acquired from the cameras. However, JPEG does not efficiently compress the continuous video stream, and is not appropriate for the Internet where the transmission bandwidth is not guaranteed. In our previous work, we presented the result of designing and implementing an embedded web camera streaming server using MPEG4 codec. But the server in our previous work did not show good performance since one CPU had to both compress and process the network transmission. In this paper, we present our efforts to improve our previous result by using dual CPUs, where DSP is employed for data compression and StrongARM is used for network processing. Better performance has been observed, but it is found that still more time is needed to optimize the performance.

  • 디지털멀티미디어방송(DMB)은 고품질의 방송 영상 및 부가 데이터를 이동 중인 차량내에서나 휴대형 단말에서 수신할 수 있는 이동 멀티미디어 방송 서비스이다. 그러나 현재 국내에서 상용화 되고 있는 지상파와 위성 DMB 서비스는 아직 비디오와 오디오에 기반한 단순한 컨텐츠에 중심을 두고 있어 사용자의 기대치에 미치지 못하고 있는 상황이다. 그리하여 현재처럼 단순히 기존의 오디오와 비디오에 기반한 케이블 TV프로그램을 그대로 옮겨올 것이 아니라, 다양한 미디어 객체들을 추가하여 사용자 인터랙티브한 대화형 멀티미디어 컨텐츠를 지원하고 더 나아가서 사용자와 서비스 제공자와의 인터랙션을 지원하는 양방향 데이터 서비스에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 실시간 양방향 대화형 DMB 서비스를 최종목표로 먼저 PC환경에서 뿐만아니라 모바일 환경에서 MPEG-4 컨텐츠의 스트리밍 시스템을 구현함으로써 DMB시스템을 시뮬레이션 한다.

Design and Implementation of a H.264 Video player based on DirectShow via Bluetooth (블루투스를 이용한 DirectShow기반의 H.264 동영상 플레이어의 설계 및 구현)

  • Bluetooth is a popular wireless data transmission method with low power consumption, but it has low data transmission rate. Thus, although many video stream players of a local or network file exist, there have been few players of video stream transmitted via Bluetooth. MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec is one of video codecs available with best compression rates for a certain quality, so a H.264 encoder seems to be adequate for video stream to be transmitted via Bluetooth. In this paper, we present a DirectShow filter based player of video stream encoded by H.264 codec, which is transmitted via Bluetooth. Details on the design and implementation of this program are described. Experimental results are shown to demonstrate the validity of the implemented program using various video samples.

Cross-layer Design of Packet Scheduling for Real-Time Multimedia Streaming (실시간 멀티미디어 스트리밍을 위한 계층 통합 패킷 스케줄링 기법)

  • Improving packet loss does not necessarily coincide with the improvement in user perceivable QoS because each frame carries different degree of importance. We propose Significance-aware packet scheduling (SAPS) to maximize user perceivable QoS. SAPS carries out two fundamental issues of packet scheduling: "What to transmit" and "When to transmit?" To adapt to the available bandwidth, it is necessarily to transmit the subset of the data packets if the entire set of packets can not be transmitted. "Packet Significance" quantifies the importance of the frame by elaborately incorporating frames' dependency. Greedy approach is used in selecting packets and transmission schedule is determined based on the Packet Significance. The proposed scheme is tested using publicly available MPEG-4 video clips. Decoding engine is embedded in the simulation software and user perceivable QoS is exposeed in termstermiSNR. Throughout the simulation based experiment, the performance of the proposed scheme is compared two other schemes: Size-based packet scheduling and Bit-rate based best effort packet scheduling. SAPS successfully incorporates the semantics of a packet and improves user perceivable QoS significantly. It successfully provides unequal protection to more important packets.

  • With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity becoming more common in today's handheld mobile devices, single-chip multi-radio combo-modules, which integrate two or more heterogeneous wireless radios on a single chip, are becoming more and more popular. The key requirement for combo solutions is that the quality of the user experience (QoE) must not be compromised by degrading connectivity performance. Therefore, characterizing and understanding the behaviour of combo-module is of vital importance to ensure this requirement in various environments. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the use of combo-modules on the performance of mobile video streaming over a Wi-Fi network. Our study reveals that the use of combo-modules incurs considerable side effects on QoE for mobile video streaming applications when the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth operate at the same time in the 2.4GHz ISM band. We reveal that rate-based adaptive algorithms, including the most popular adaptive bitrate streaming MPEG-DASH, is more severely affected by this phenomenon than buffer-based adaptive algorithms.

  • 본 논문에서는 IP-TV 보금을 위해서 고성능 저가의 IP-TV(Internet Protocol TV) 셋탑박스의 필요성을 감안하여 TV를 통한 인터넷 컨텐츠 이용에 최적화된 IP-TV 셋탑박스를 제조업체(Ninelanes)와 공동으로 개발하였다. 개발된 셋탑박스는 브로드밴드를 이용한 VOD서비스, 1Mbps급의 DVD급 화질을 지원하고 스트리밍 비디오와 저장된 콘텐츠를 직접 재생할 수 있다. 개발된 셋탑박스는 VHS(450kbps), DVD급(750kbps), DVD(1.2Mbps), MP3, AC3, MPEG-2/4, VP4/5/6, WMV9, DVIX 등의 다양한 디지털 미디어 재생 포맷을 지원 할 수 있도록 개발되어 가격경쟁력 향상 및 멀티미디어 지원환경 구축, 인코더방식의 코덱 전환이 가능하다. 또한 고집적, 저전력, 고성능, 저가형 개발 개념으로 개발된 이 셋탑박스는 각종 IP-TV기능을 펌웨어나 소프트웨어 수정으로 시스템 변경이 가능하여 IP-TV 셋탑박스 보급에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

Efficient postprocessing method for low bit-rate video and its performance evaluation (저 비트율 비디오를 위한 효과적인 후처리 기법 및 성능 평가)

  • 본 논문에서는 인터넷 스트리밍 및 모바일 응용 등에서 요구되는 저 비트율 비디오를 위한 효과적인 후처리 기법을 제안한다. 블록기반 압축영상의 특성상 낮은 비트율에서는 블록킹 현상과 같은 화질열화가 불가피하다. 이러한 블록기반 압축영상의 블록킹 현상에 대하여 본 논문에서 제안한 디블록킹 기법은 블록 경계 주변의 특성에 따라 필터링 모드를 달리 적용하여 효율적으로 블록킹 현상을 제거함으로서 주관적, 객관적 화질을 향상시킨다. 제안한 알고리즘에서는 모드 선택의 정확성을 높이기 위하여 저역통과필터를 이용한 간단한 전처리 과정을 거치도록 하고, 또한 영상의 실제 에지와 블록킹 현상을 구분하기 위하여 3가지 모드를 도입하며, 이를 통해 필터링에 의한 실제 에지 부분의 화질열화를 방지하도록 한다. 마지막으로 corner outlier와 같은 특수한 artifact의 제거를 위해 별도의 모드를 추가한다. 실험에서는 MPEG-4로 복호된 영상에 대하여 제안한 필터를 적용하고, 최근 표준화가 완료된 H.264의 루프필터 및 최근 발표된 저 비트율 비디오에 대한 후처리 기법과의 비교실험을 통하여 제안된 방법의 성능을 평가한다.
