Depression and Social Support among Adults in Jeju Province, South Korea (제주지역 성인의 사회적 지지와 우울)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare depression and social support according to general characteristics and to investigate the influence of social support on depression. Methods: This study analyzed raw data from a project funded by Jeju Province. Data were collected through home visit interview with 750 households selected by using a randomized cluster sampling method. CES-D was used to measure depression, and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey was used to measure social support. The data of 1,155 subjects were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and regression. Results: The mean was 11.35 for depression and 75.53 for social support. Women showed a higher depression score and a lower social support score than men did. Older people; the divorced or the bereaved; and those in groups comprising people with lower education, lower social class, poor health, or high stress presented higher depression and lower social support. The result of stepwise regression showed that social support was one of the predictive variables of depression, and 22% of variance was explained by social support in this study. Conclusions: Social support was a powerful predictive variable of depression, and it was suggested that to prevent and manage depression, strategies that enhance social support should be developed and evaluated.

Risk Assessment of 5-Chloro-2-Methylisothiazol-3(2H)-One/2-Methylisothiazol-3(2H)-One (CMIT/MIT) Used as a Preservative in Cosmetics

  • The mixture of 5-chloro-2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (CMIT) and 2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (MIT), CMIT/MIT, is a preservative in cosmetics. CMIT/MIT is a highly effective preservative; however, it is also a commonly known skin sensitizer. Therefore, in the present study, a risk assessment for safety management of CMIT/MIT was conducted on products containing 0.0015% of CMIT/MIT, which is the maximum MIT level allowed in current products. The no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for CMIT/MIT was 2.8 mg/kg bw/day obtained from a two-generation reproductive toxicity test, and the skin sensitization toxicity standard value for CMIT/MIT, or the no expected sensitization induction level (NESIL), was $1.25{\mu}g/cm^2/day$ in humans. According to a calculation of body exposure to cosmetics use, the systemic exposure dosage (SED) was calculated as 0.00423 mg/kg bw/day when leave-on and rinse-off products were considered. Additionally, the consumer exposure level (CEL) amounted to $0.77512{\mu}g/cm^2/day$ for all representative cosmetics and $0.00584{\mu}g/cm^2/day$ for rinse-off products only. As a result, the non-cancer margin of safety (MOS) was calculated as 633, and CMIT/MIT was determined to be safe when all representative cosmetics were evaluated. In addition, the skin sensitization acceptable exposure level (AEL)/CEL was calculated as 0.00538 for all representative cosmetics and 2.14225 for rinse-off products; thus, CMIT/MIT was considered a skin sensitizer when all representative cosmetics were evaluated. Current regulations indicate that CMIT/MIT can only be used at concentrations 0.0015% or less and is prohibited from use in other cosmetics products. According to the results of this risk assessment, the CMIT/MIT regulatory values currently used in cosmetics are evaluated as appropriate.

The Association of Social Support with Health Status and Health Behavior among Rural Aged Population (일부 농촌 지역 노인의 사회적 지지와 건강수준 및 건강행태와의 관련성)

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of social support with health status and health behavior. Methods: This study was conducted with 79 elderly people in Gunja-ri, Dongsan-myun, Chuncheon. We performed face to face interview which was composed of socio-demographic characteristics, social support, health status and health behavior. The association between social support and result variables was analysed by Chi-square test and logistic regression. We used SAS ver9.1 for statistic analysis. Results: Mean age of the study population was 72.0$\pm$7.0, social support score was 14.3$\pm$4.7 with full marks of 20 and 36.25% of the total population were shown to have depression. When the social support score was changed, depression (p=0.0007) and physical exercise (p=0.0312) showed significant difference. The self-rated health status was significantly related to the relationship with family members (OR=0.25, 95% CI=0.07-0.95) and the quality of sleep was also significantly associated to the relationship with family members (OR=0.21, 95% CI=0.06-0.73). The physical exercise was done significantly less in the group without close friends than in the group with many close friends (OR=0.21, 95% CI=0.05-0.94) and the depression was significantly more in the group without community participation than in the group with community participation (OR=4.79, 95% CI=1.62-14.15). Conclusions: Through this study, we could conclude that the social support factors are associated with health status and health behavior. Therefore, to improve the health status of rural elderly, we need to approach to develop social support.

Analysis of Characterization in Commercial Extra Virgin Olive Oils (유통 압착올리브유의 이화학적인 특성)

  • To analyze and differentiate volatile compounds of 13 extra virgin olive oils from market, solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) GC-MS and electronic nose (EN) equipped with metal oxide sensors were applied. The volatiles identified in extra virgin olive oils include hexanal, 4-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, acetic acid, and 2,4-dimethyl-heptane, etc. Response from EN was analysed by the principal component analysis. Proportion of the first Principal component was 99.70%, suggesting that each aroma pattern of the 13 extra virgin olive oils could be discriminated by EN. Fatty acid compositions were oleic (61.1${\sim}$77.9 mole%), palmitic (11.7${\sim}$16.5 mole%), linoleic (4.7${\sim}$9.7 mole%), stearic (2.5${\sim}$2.9 mole%), Palmitoleic (0.8${\sim}$2.4 mole%), and linolenic acid (0.7${\sim}$1.2 mole%). In color study, extra virgin olive oil showed $L^{\ast}$ value of 81.7${\sim}$92.9, $a^{\ast}$ value of -28.3${\sim}$13.5 and $b^{\ast}$ value of 52.2${\sim}$139.0. Total phenol and ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ contents were 6.2${\sim}$24.9 mg/100 g and 5.5${\sim}$12.8 mg/100 g, respectively. In Rancimat test, the induction period of 13 extra virgin olive oils showed 31.76${\sim}$54.04 hr while their POV ranged from 13.5 to 22.9 meq/kg oil.
