  • Designs of total elbow arthroplasty have been evolving with clinical experiences. Newer implants are expected to resolve current limitations and improve long term outcomes. This review article focuses on the basic knowledge of unlinked and convertible total elbow arthroplasty. There have been a variety of designs of unlinked total elbow prostheses. Some implants are still used in the market, while others are no longer commercially available. Modified and newer designs include more congruent contact surface, stemmed implant, and radiocapitellar arthroplasty. Two convertible elbow prostheses have been developed, and one implant is currently available in Korea. Conversion from an unlinked to a linked mode is performed by adding a linking cap. Unlinked total elbow arthroplasty, which restores native elbow kinematics, has a biomechanical rationale of lowering polyethylene wear and loosening of implants. It can be indicated in younger and higher demand patients, who have adequate bone stock and soft tissues. Convertible total elbow arthroplasty broadens implant selection and simplifies revision surgery. These newer prostheses possibly improve the long term outcomes and resolve disadvantages of linked prostheses in total elbow arthroplasty.

  • In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride ($SOCl_2$) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxyl groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) to make MWCNT-MPTMS. The MWCNT-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA composite particles with 3 kinds of emulsifiers, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) as a cationic, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an anionic and polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) as a nonionic emulsifier. Morphologies of composite emulsions were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphologies of emulsion polymerized MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA with SDBS showed more uniform particle size distribution compared to those of other two emulsifiers used emulsions. MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA showed $3.4^{\circ}C$ higher $T_g$ compared to pristine MWCNT/PMMA due to covalent bond formation at interface of MWCNT-MPTMS and PMMA.

  • We investigated quality changes in Setoka ([Citrus unshiu$\times$Citrus sinensis]$\times$Citrus reticulate]$\times$[Citrus reticulata$\times$Citrus sinensis]) wrapped in 30-m pore size low-density polyethylene film (LDPE) and stored at different temperatures. LDPE wrapping effectively inhibited weight loss, and fruits seemed fresh even after room temperature storage. The decay rate was higher at room temperature and with LDPE wrapping. The respiration rate of LDPE- wrapped fruits was somewhat higher than that of control samples. Thus, no modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) effect was observed when 'Setoka' citrus was studied. Acidity decreased at a constant but different rate with each storage method used, and these rates were correlated with respiration rates. Soluble solid content (SSC), however, increased during 45 days of storage a subsequent rapid decrease was then observed.

  • To establish basic techniques for protoplast fusion of Coriolus versicolor several factors affecting protoplast formation and regeneration were investigated. Protoplast isolation was at maximum with 2.5-day cultured mycelia of C. versicolor treated with the combination of two enzymes, Novozym 234 (10 mg/ml) and cellulase Onozuka R-10 (15 mg/ml), for 3-4.5 hours at $30^{\circ}C.$ As an osmotic stabilizer for stabilizing the protoplast, 0.6 M sucrose was the best for formation and regeneration of the protoplast from the mycelia of the fungus and the regeneration frequency was 3.48%. Protoplast fusion was made by a modified method of Peberdy using PEG (M.W. 4,000). The fusion frequency between two mutants of C. versicolor was 1.86% and the fusion products showed differences in growth rate and colony morphology.

  • To estimate the shelf life of red cabbage sprouts (stored at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$), the numbers of total aerobic bacteria were determined during storage. Parameters for the Gompertz model were determined and the shelf life was predicted using a modified Gompertz equation. The estimated shelf lives of red cabbage sprouts packed with polyolefin film and polyamide/polyamide/polyethylene (PA/PA/PE) film at $4^{\circ}C$ were 49.4 and 52.3 h, respectively, whereas those of red cabbage sprouts packed with polyolefin film and PA/PA/PE film at $10^{\circ}C$ were 19.7 and 22.6, respectively. The shelf life prediction equation was appropriate, based on the statistical analysis of the accuracy factor, bias factor, and mean square error. On the other hand, for red cabbage sprouts treated with aqueous $ClO_2$/fumaric acid and UV-C then packed with polyolefin film or PA/PA/PE film, the shelf life was predicted to be longer than 168 h. These results suggest that the combined treatment of aqueous $ClO_2$/fumaric acid and UV-C can be useful for improving microbial safety and extending the shelf life of red cabbage sprouts during storage.

  • A packaging system integrated in primary and secondary packages to deliver consumers fresh peach in the produce supply chain was designed and its effectiveness on quality preservation was tested. The master packaging system was designed to contain 6 individual polypropylene film (PP, $30{\mu}m$ thickness) packages of 300 g peach fruit inside $35{\mu}m$ thick low density polyethylene (LDPE) bag located in a corrugated paperboard box. As a variable to attain the desired package atmosphere around the fruit during cold storage and subsequent retail display at higher temperature, different numbers (1, 3 and 7) of microperforations in $59{\mu}m$ diameter were tested on the individual PP packages. As control treatment, six fruits were placed without wrapping in a corrugated paperboard box. During the storage at $5^{\circ}C$, the control and individual packages were periodically separated from the box or master package, moved to the simulated retail shelf conditions of $20^{\circ}C$ and then stored for 3 more days with package atmosphere and fruit quality being measured. The package with 7 microperforations was the best in the ability to attain beneficial MA of 6~10% $O_2$ and 11~19% $CO_2$ around the fruit during the chilled storage at $5^{\circ}C$ and simulated retail display at $20^{\circ}C$. Packages with smaller number of microperforations resulted in anaerobic atmosphere at the low temperature storage and/or the subsequent high temperature display. Compared to control, all the treatments with master packaging system gave better retention of fruit firmness with significantly less weight loss.

  • In this study, we identified methods to improve heat stability and skin permeability of functional protein biopolymers, such as growth factors, enzymes, and peptides. The biopolymers participate in cellular activation and catalytic functions in vivo. Therefore, when applied to cosmetics, their efficacies are expected to be helpful for skin care. However, they have disadvantages that include instability to heat and low skin permeability due to their high molecular weight. To overcome these problems, we searched for a composition that increases heat stability. Stability was improved using a polymeric humectant having a long polyethylene glycol length, compared with a mono-molecular structure humectant. Next, to enhance skin permeation, a permeation enhancing peptide was selected from a phage library. The permeation enhancing peptide can be commonly used to promote the permeation of growth factors, enzymes, and peptides. Screening was performed on the polymeric humectant formulation. One dominant peptide from the modified-screening method was identified. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the permeability of the peptide was better than that of the peptide developed through a screening system based on phosphate-buffered saline. The data indicate that the polymeric humectant formulation will be helpful for increasing the heat stability of protein ingredients and that skin permeability could be increased by a formulation-specific, penetration-enhancing peptide.

  • In this study, vinyl waste, which is the cause of environmental pollution, is recycled via an electrospinning method and applied as a separator that can be employed for energy storage devices. In detail, vinyl wastes are dissolved in a solution containing p-xylene and cyclohexanone, followed by electrospinning to obtain a vinyl waste-derived separator(VWS), and then the hydrophilic functional groups on the surface of VWS are introduced using a plasma treatment to improve wettability. Scanning electron microscopy analysis have verified that the shape and thickness of as-spun VWS vary depending on the concentration of vinyl waste. The surface hydrophility of VWS is modified by plasma treatment with applied powers ranging from 80 to 120W. The lowest contact angle is observed when the 100W power is applied to VWS(VWS-100W). In electrochemical analysis, the VWS-100W-based supercapacitor device shows the highest specific capacitance of 57.9 F g-1. This is ascribed to the high porosity achieved by electrospinning as well as the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups by the oxygen plasma treatment. In conclusion, vinyl waste is successfully recycled into separators for energy storage devices, suggesting a new way to reduce environmental pollution.

  • Clonal propagation of high-value forest trees through somatic embryogenesis (SE) has the potential to rapidly capture the benefits of breeding or genetic engineering programs and to improve raw material uniformity and quality. A major barrier to the commercialization of this technology is the low quality of the resulting embryos. Several factors limit commercialization of SE for Corsican pine, including low initiation rates, low culture survival, culture decline causing low or no embryo production, and inability of somatic embryos to fully mature, resulting in low germination and reduced vigour of somatic seedlings. The objective was to develop a Corsican pine maturation medium that would produce cotyledonary embryos capable of germination. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, and significant differences between treatments determined by multiple range test at P=0.05. Corsican pine (Pinus nigra var. maritima) cultures were initiated on modified !P6 medium. Modifications of the same media were used for culture multiplication and maintenance. Embryogenic cultures were maintained on the same medium semi solidified with 2.5 g/l Gelrite. A maturation medium, capable of promoting the development of Corsican pine somatic embryos that can germinate, is a combination of iP6 modified salts, 2% maltose, 13% polyethylene glycol (PEG), 5 mg!l abscisic acid (ABA), and 2.5 g/l Gelrite. After initiation and once enough tissue developed they were grown in liquid medium. Embryogenic cell suspensions were established by adding 0.951.05 g of 10- to 14-day-old semisolid-grown embryogenic tissue to 9 ml of liquid maintenance media in a 250ml Erlenmeyer flask. Cultures were then incubated in the dark at 2022$^{\circ}$C and rotated at 120 rpm. After 2.53 months on maturation medium, somatic embryos were selected that exhibited normal embryo shape. Ten embryos were placed horizontally on 20 ml of either germination medium ($\frac{2}{1}$strength Murashige and Skoog (1962) salts with 2.5 g/l activated charcoal) or same medium with copper sulphate adjusted to 0.25 mg/1 to compensate for copper adsorption by activated carbon. 2% and 4% maltose was substituted by 7.5% and 13% PEG respectively to improve the yield of the embryos. Substitution of' maltose with PEG was clearly beneficial to embryo development. When 2% of the maltose was replaced with 7.5% PEG, many embryos developed to large bullet-shaped embryos. At latter stages of development most embryos callused and stopped development. A few short, barrel-shaped cotyledonary embryos formed that were covered by callus on the sides and base. When 4% of the maltose was removed and substituted with 13% PEG, the embryos developed further, emerging from the callus and increasing yield slightly. Microscopic examination of the cultures showed differing morphologies, varying from mostly single cells or clumps to well-formed somatic embryos that resembled early zygotic embryos only liquid cultures with organized early-stag. A procedure for converting and acclimating germinants to growth in soil and greenhouse conditions is also tested. Seedling conversion and growth were highly related to the quality of the germinant at the time of planting. Germinants with larger shoots, longer, straighter hypocotyls and longer roots performed best. When mature zygotic embryos germinate the root emerges, before or coincident with the shoot. In contrast, somatic embryos germinate in reverse sequence, with the cotyledons greening first, then shoot emergence and then, much later, if at all, the appearance of the root. Somatic seedlings, produced from the maturation medium, showed 100% survival when planted in a field setting. Somatic seedlings showed normal yearly growth relative to standard seedlings from natural seed.

  • The object of this study is to investigate the quality change of sweet basil grown with selenium(Se) in hydroponic culture. Sweet basil was cultured with 1 fold herb nutrient solution as suggested by European vegetable R & D Center in Belgium. Before three weeks harvest, sodium selenate(N $a_2$Se $O_4$) was supplied to 2 and 4 mg. $L^{-1}$ in the nutrient solution. Sweet basil was stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$ using 40um ceramic film and PET (polyethylene terephalate) for 15 days in modified atmosphere(MA) storage condition. The weight loss of sweet basil was higher in non-treatment compared to Se treatments in both of two films but it was decreased over 5% in PET treatment. Se concentrations in leaf tissues increased in the response to the treated levels of N $a_2$Se $O_4$concentrations, and this tendency was appeared similar results after storage. There was no significant effect of packing materials on volatilization of Se in sweet basil. The total chlorophyll and essential oil content was increased with increasing N $a_2$Se $O_4$concentration in nutrient solution. The amount of volatilization flavor was not higher at N $a_2$Se $O_4$4mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment compare to others during storage. Se content was 112.73 ug. $g^{-1}$ dry mass at 2 mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment before storage and the decrease of Se content was observed by 50% at 15 days after storage. The condition, which N $a_2$Se $O_4$2mg. $L^{-1}$$^{plement}$ in nutrient solution during growth stage and stored with 40um ceramic film on 1$0^{\circ}C$are acceptable for maintaining of sweet basil quality. Moreover it can be a proper Se concentration for human health. Overall, Se treatment in nutrient solution has effect on promoting and maintaining quality of herb during storage life. Also, there was not significant change of essential oil compounds by volatilization of Se.mpounds by volatilization of Se.
