An Integrated Surface Water-Groundwater Modeling by Using Fully Combined SWAT MODFLOW Model (완전연동형 SWAT-MODFLOW 모형을 이용한 지표수-지하수 통합 유출모의)

  • This paper suggests a novel approach of integrating the quasi-distributed watershed model SWAT with the fully-distributed groundwater model MODFLOW. Since the SWAT model has semi distributed features, its groundwater components hardly considers distributed parameters such as hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient. Generating a detailed representation of groundwater recharge, head distribution and pumping rate is equally difficult. To solve these problems, the method of exchanging the characteristics of the hydrologic response units (HRUs) in SWAT with cells in MODFLOW by fully combined manner is proposed. The linkage is completed by considering the interaction between the stream network and the aquifer to reflect boundary flow. This approach is provisionally applied to Gyungancheon basin in Korea. The application demonstrates a combined model which enables an interaction between saturated zones and channel reaches. This interaction plays an essential role in the runoff generation in the Gyungancheon basin. The comprehensive results show a wide applicability of the model which represents the temporal-spatial groundwater head distribution and recharge.

  • 본 연구에서는 준분포형 지표수 유출모형인 SWAT과 3차원 지하수 유동모형인 MODFLOW의 완전연동형 결합모형을 독자적으로 개발했다. SWAT의 지하수 모형성분은 집중형이므로 분포형 매개변수와 변화하는 양수량, 지하수위의 변화등을 고려하지 못하며 MODFLOW모형은 주요 입력자요인 함양량의 정확한 산정이 어렵다. 두 프로그램의 연결작업은 지하수 함양량의 전달과정과 하천네트워크-대수층간의 상호작용을 고려하여 완성하였으며 경안천유역의 오산천 소유역에 모형을 시험구동을 수행했다. 시험구동결과 결합모형은 수문모형 혹은 지하수 모형만으로는 해결되지 않는 하천-대수층간의 경계유량을 고려한 유출해석이 가늠해짐으로써 유역내 지하수 유출량 및 총 유출량의 신뢰성이 증대될 것으로 기대된다.

  • In this study, comprehensive evaluation on the fully coupled SWAT-MODFLOW model is performed. Since combined model can consider the spatially varied daily recharge rate, groundwater modeling would be greatly enhanced. Also, combined model has been able to generate the distribution of groundwater heads with time, surface-subsurface flow modeling would be greatly advanced. River-aquifer interaction is well established in the combined model considering two-way interactions. Consequently, the reliability of groundwater discharge and total runoff of watershed would be greatly enhanced when combined model is used.

  • In this study, the conduct of underground water flow system with 3 dimensions is interpreted in order to examine closely the actual condition regarding the flow of the underground water which is forecast from the tunnel segment and the interpretation result which selects the design and the construction technique of the tunnel segment was applied. Also, an obstacle to construct that relates with the underground water flow in construction duration in advance will be able to apply with information that is necessary in order to establish the countermeasure. The objective tunnel is the BEOPGI tunnel segment that is 2 parallel tunnels that are a one-way 2 lane and the parameters of the MODFLOW model executing the boring investigation and the permeability examination were presumed. The underground water flow of the excavation tunnel inside was interpreted by the MODFLOW model using the parameters which is presumed and two values which compared with calculated value and observed value are the same almost. Also, when the underground water discharge quantify that followed in tunnel excavation tries to compare, the underground water total discharge quantity from tunnel point of start until destination was presumed as 0.0269㎥/day/$m^2$.

Groundwater Analysis for Jun Stream Basin in Donghae City using MODFLOW (MODFLOW를 이용한 동해시 전천유역의 지하수분석)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the change of groundwater and its effect to hydraulic head or parameter sensitivity in order to predict the effect of a new groundwater well using MODFLOW. With the downstream area of the Jun stream basin in the Donghae city, two condition were simulated; (i) First simulation condition is to simulate natural steady-state and the groundwater heads for observation wells are calibrated. After the calibration, existing wells are simulated to find out the pure effect of the next simulation condition, (ii) Secondly, the design wells are planed and simulated for the solution of water shortage problem at Donghae city. As a result of the simulation, the maximum drawdown which is approximately 0.35m occurs in layer 1. This represents that there is no intrusion of salty water and the design plan is acceptable. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of each parameter in MODFLOW is accomplished. We found out that the sensitive parameters are initial head, anisotropic factor, hydraulic conductivity, and general head boundary

Integrated Surface-groundwater Analysis in Jeju Island (제주 지역 지표수-지하수 연계 해석)

  • In Jeju island, the surface runoff characteristics are quite different from those of inland. Most of streams show dried characteristics by means of large portion of recharge which goes to the deep aquifer. For this reason, the accurate estimation of hydrologic components by using watershed model like SWAT is very difficult. On the other hand, the integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model is able to simulate the complex runoff structure including stream-aquifer interaction, spatial-temporal groundwater recharge and so on. The comprehensive results of Pyoseon region in Jeju island show that the amount of groundwater discharge to stream is very small, but it might be added to the discharge into the sea. Statistical analysis shows that SWAT-MODFLOW's results represent better than SWAT's. Also, SWAT-MODFLOW produces a reasonable water budget which shows a quite similar pattern of observed one. This result proves that the integrated SWAT-MODFLOW can be used as a proper tool for hydrologic analysis of entire Jeju island.

  • Problems that arise from the use of groundwater can be minimized by connecting surface water with groundwater. We investigated the groundwater level at Osibcheon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk Province, and performed borehole investigation. We then used the SWAI-MODFLOW model to analyze variations in groundwater level and discharge amount. We also discuss how to assess the potential of groundwater dams in Korean by analyzing the hydrogeological properties of the candidate site.

  • For construction and design of tunnels, groundwater flow models are used to find the influence of groundwater to the stability of tunnels considering the geological condition around the tunnels and the materials used in tunnel linings. For the analysis of tunnel flow, some commercial programs, e.g. MODFLOW, SEEP/W etc., are used. These programs have limitations that MODFLOW could not define curved surface smoothly in three dimensional flow media and SEEP/W is the 2-dimensional flow model. In this paper, the ability of a finite element program developed for analyzing 3-dimensional groundwater flow is examined. Confined steady state groundwater flow solution in non-homogeneous media is obtained using isoparametric element with eight trilinear hexahedron nodes and is compared with the result of MODFLOW. It was found that the solution yielded a good result with the three dimensional flow studied.

  • This study investigated the modeling of dissolution Diesel to estimate the behavior of contaminants in the ground. The modeling based on the initial concentration change considering dissolution potential of pure Diesel and Xylene was performed using VISUAL MODFLOW, and was compared with general modeling ignored the initial concentration change condition.

  • 본 연구에서는 지표수-지하수 상호작용을 모의할 수 있는 SWAT-MODFLOW 모형을 이용하여 수변지역의 토지이용 변화에 따른 혼합대의 수문학적 특성 변화를 분석하였다. 연구를 위해 선정된 시험유역의 불수투지역, 농경지 등 기존 수변 토지이용도가 초지, 갯버들 등의 식생이 식재된 지역으로 변경되는 상황을 가정하여 SWAT-MODFLOW 모형을 적용, 지표수-지하수 상호작용을 중심으로 하는 수문학적 특성 변화를 모의 분석하였다. 수변의 토지이용을 초지로 변경하였을 경우 혼합대의 지표수-지하수 교환량이 다소 증가하는 것으로 모의되었으며, 수변 지역 토양의 토양 수분량 또한 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 수변 지역에 갯벌들을 식재하는 경우 초지에 비해 지표수-지하수 교환량 및 토양 수분량의 증가폭이 더욱 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 분석 결과 SWAT-MODFLOW 모형은 수변 토지 이용의 변화에 따른 수문학적 특성 변화를 모의할 수 있는 것으로 판명되었으며, 향후 실측자료와의 비교 연구 등을 실시하여 정확도가 입증된다면, 각종 수생태 복원사업의 계획 수립 시 토지이용 변화에 따른 효과 분석 모의에 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
