  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the extent of prolongation in P300 latency by sleep deprivation and personality variables. Methods: Eighteen healthy male college students participated in this study. Subjects remained awake for 37 hours under continuous surveillance. In the morning and evening of two consecutive study days, P300 was checked four times. MMPI and STAI-T were checked in the morning of the first day. The 18 subjects were divided into two groups according to their extent of P300 prolongation by sleep deprivation: Group A consisted of short P300 latency prolonged subjects, and group B of long latency prolonged subjects. The MMPI profiles and STAI-T scores of these two groups were compared. Results: Group B showed significantly higher scores in the Mf subscale (t=-2.16, df=16, p=0.046) and Pa subscale (t=-2.61, df=16, p=0.019) than group A. Group B also showed higher F subscale scores at a marginally significant level (t=-2.11, df=16, p=0.052). Conclusion: These results suggest that subjects with higher scores in F, Mf, and Pa subscales tend to have delayed cognitive process and decreased efficiency of mental process by sleep deprivation. It can be hypothesized that individuals who are sensitive, passive, dependent, and easily projecting are susceptible to the deterioration of cognitive function by total sleep deprivation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the association of personality characteristics with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Methods: Four hundred and fifty one college students in Gyeonggi-do completed the revised version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) and a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 25.0 software (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). Results: Mean values of the number of positive answers of TMD symptoms were significantly higher in higher scorers on hypochondriasis (Hs), depression (D), paranoia (Pa) (Hs>60, D>64, Pa>59) (p<0.01). Higher scorers on Hs, hysteria (Hy), schizophrenia (Sc), Pa, psychasthenia (Pt) (Hy>64, Sc>64, Pt>64) exhibited significantly higher mean values of the number of positive answers of contributing factors for TMD (p<0.01, p<0.001). Low scorers on social introversion ($Si{\leq}44$) exhibited significantly lower mean value of the number of positive answers of contributing factors for TMD than high or moderate scorers on Si (Si>64, 45-64) (p<0.01, p<0.05). The percentage of subjects who responded that they had at least one TMD symptom was significantly higher in higher scorers on Hs, Pt, D (p<0.05, p<0.01). The significantly higher percentage of higher scorers on D, Pa reported at least one contributing factor for TMD (p<0.05). The percentage of subjects who responded that they had at least one TMD symptom or one contributing factor for TMD was significantly different among three groups divided by T-score on Si (p<0.01, p<0.05). T-scores of Hs, D, Hy, Pt and Sc showed significant correlation with the numbers of TMD symptoms and contributing factors for TMD, respectively (p<0.001). A correlation was found between T-score of Pd and the number of TMD symptoms (p<0.001). T-score of Si correlated to the number of contributing factors for TMD (p<0.001). Conclusions: Most clinical scales of MMPI-2 were found to be related to TMD. Psychological assessment including MMPI-2 may play a role in predicting treatment outcome and planning treatment of TMD.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the psychological characteristics of patients with functional dyspepsia. Methods: The subjects included ninety patients with functional dyspepsia and sixty four psychiatric out-patients. We administered Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) and Illness Behavior Questionnaire(IBQ). Results: There were no significant differences between the patients with functional dyspepsia and the psychiatric out-patients by MMPI. Two groups both showed a higher distribution in hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria subscales than in any other subscales. The patients with functional dyspepsia showed lower scores in disease conviction and affective disturbance subscales in IBQ than the psychiatric out-patients. The distribution of scores of the other IBQ subscales were similar between the patients with functional dyspepsia and the psychiatric out-patients. The patients with functional dyspepsia were divided into three groups for the Multivariate cluster analysis: normal, similar to psychiatric out-patient, and severe neurotic. The severe neurotic group showed higher scores in hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, psychathenia, and schizophrenia subscales in MMPI and showed significant different scores in affective disturbance, disease conviction, psychological and somatic concerns, affective disturbance, denial, and irritability subscales in IBQ. Conclusion: If patients with functional dyspepsia show severe neurotic behavior, such as those in, they would need appropriate psychiatric intervention.

  • This study was designed to determine whether non-violent criminal and normal control on the basis of concentration of levels of trace mineral and toxic metal by analysis of human scalp hair. The subjects were selected 87 nonviolent criminal from a prison population and 120 normal control from periodic health checks for study. Hair samples were taken from the napes and Minnesota Multiple Personality Inventory (MMPI) was performed also. Five trace mineral (Zn, Cu, Mg, Fe, Na) and two toxic metal (lead, cadmium) contents were determined by an atomic absorption spectrometer. The contents of zinc and magnesium in hair of non-violent criminal were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.01). In the case of lead and cadimum, mean value of criminal group was significantly higher than control group. Significantly higher T-score of MMPI was seen in non-violent criminal group fur psychopathic deviate (Pd), paranoia scale (Pa), and Mania scale (Ma) than control group, but T-score of depression scale (D) was significantly higher in the control group. In the non-violent criminal group, the content of copper inversely proportion to T-score of Hs, D, Hy, Pd, Mf, Pa, Pt, Sc, Si except Ma, also Zinc inversely proportion to T-score of Hy, Mf, Pa, Pt. These results suggest that difference of some hair mineral contents exist between criminal and normal control group. Thus further studies are necessary to determine whether violent and nonviolent criminal group attributed biochemical imbalance with carefully constructed and controlled studies.

  • Objectives : In this study, we aimed to elucidate the demographic and psychological characteristics of maladaptive soldiers in the Republic of Korean Army. Methods : Study participants included 110 male conscripts who had participated in the Green camp, which was a form of group psychosocial treatment program for maladaptive soldiers. All participants were interviewed and diagnosed by a psychiatrist, and classified into two groups according to whether they left or rejoined the army. We analyzed the differences between these two groups in terms of demographic features, psychiatric diagnosis and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) subscores. Results : Compared with soldiers who rejoined their units, those who left military service exhibited significantly lower educational level (p=0.041) and a higher rate in psychiatric treatment prior to enlistment (p=0.011). Among the 106 subjects, 63 (59.4%) and 23 (21.7%) were diagnosed with personality disorder and adjustment disorder, respectively. Further, those who left military service were diagnosed more frequently with mood disorder (p=0.001) and schizophrenia (p=0.014) than those who rejoined their units. Additionally, the MMPI scores of soldiers who left military service were significantly higher on the psychasthenia (p=0.028) and schizophrenia (p=0.039) scales than those of soldiers who rejoined their units. Conclusion : Most of the maladaptive soldiers were diagnosed with mental disorders. The results of this study suggest that systematic, consistent psychiatric evaluation and intervention for maladaptive male conscripts is crucial in the Republic of Korean army.
