ODSB and OSSB Error Performance Analysis of MMoF Systems in Rician Fading Channel

  • Error performance of two modulation schemes of millimeter-wave over fiber (MMoF) system i.e., optical double side band (ODSB) and optical single side band (OSSB) modulations is analyzed under Rician fading. Bit error rates (BER) of two detection techniques i.e., coherent and noncoherent detection are also compared in Rician fading. In aspect of error performance, ODSB modulation scheme has better BER than OSSB modulation scheme has under Rician fading. On the other hand, OSSB modulation scheme is advantageous in case of considering high bandwidth efficiency and small power degradation. Coherent detection technique is proper in Rician fading, because coherent detection provides more SNR gain whether fading is serious or not. Noncoherent detection can be applied when we need a simple receiver structure.

Evaluation of Transformation Capacity for Degradation of Ethylene Chlorides by Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b

  • The transformation capacity (T$\_$c/) of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b in the degradation of ethylene chlorides was determined by measuring the decrease of soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) activity of resting cells in batch experiments. All measurements of sMMO activity were taken in the presence of 20 mM formate to avoid the deficiency of reducing power, and within 2 hrs to avoid the effect of natural inactivation from instability of the resting cells. The constant T$\_$c/ values of 0.58 ${\pm}$ 0.132 and 0.80 ${\pm}$ 0.17 ${\mu}$mol/mg cell were obtained for trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,2-dichloroethylene (cis and trans-1,2-DCE), respectively, regardless of their concentrations. The transformation capacity measured by this method can be used to predict the amount of cells that should be stimulated in in-situ bioremediation.

Gap arthroplasty with active mouth opening exercises using an interocclusal splint in temporomandibular joint ankylosis patients

  • Background: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis during early childhood may lead to disturbances in growth and facial asymmetry and to serious difficulties in eating as well as in breathing during sleep. The purpose of this study is to describe the effectiveness of an interocclusal splint (IOS) for active mouth opening exercises in the treatment of TMJ ankylosis. Methods: A total of nine patients with 13 instances of TMJ ankylosis from 2008 to 2010 were included in this study, of which five patients were male and four patients were female. Five patients demonstrated unilateral ankylosis, while five patients showed bilateral symptoms. Ankylosed mass resection with coronoidectomy, fibrotic scar release, and resection of stylohyoid ligament calcification was performed with gap arthroplasty without an interpositional graft, and all patients were assessed for maximum mouth opening (MMO) during a mean 6.6-year follow-up period. Results: All patients were subjected to postoperative mouth opening exercises from the day of the operation with the help of an IOS, which was based on an impression taken during surgery. All patients were sufficiently comfortable moving their mandible according to the IOS's guiding plane and impingement, and satisfactory results were achieved, in which MMO was improved by 35 mm more than 6 years after surgery. Conclusions: Complete and adequate resection of the ankylosed mass and postoperative active mouth opening exercises are essential in the treatment of TMJ ankylosis. Moreover, a more comfortable mouth opening guide and interdigitation can be achieved using an IOS, and newly organized fibrosis in the gap space between the newly made resected condylar head and temporal fossa can be suggested.

  • Introduction: Limited mouth opening is a representative clinical symptom of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWOR). Various treatment methods have been proposed for patients with ADDWOR. This study examined the clinical effectiveness of template therapy for patients with mouth opening difficulty due to the ADDWOR. Material and Methods: A total of 14 patients (female 12, male 2, average age: $29.1{\pm}14.4$), who had been treated in the template clinic, Sooncheonhyang University Bucheon Hospital, from January of 2006 to December of 2008, were enrolled in this study. The subjects were selected according to the following criteria: more than 2 weeks after the onset of locking, mouth opening range <35 mm, and confirmed ADDWOR without a synovial pathology by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All patients were treated with the template appliance, instructed to wear it while sleeping and exercise for at least 10 hours per day. The maximum mouth opening (MMO) range and pain recognition scores before and after template therapy were recorded and compared. A paired t-test and Wilcoxon's signed rank test were used for statistical analysis. Results: After the periodical follow up, significant improvement in the opening range was observed in the template treatment group. The average MMO range before treatment was $30.2{\pm}3.5mm$ and the average MMO after treatment and follow up was $47.1{\pm}4.7mm$. The mean amount of mouth opening increment was $16.9{\pm}5.4mm$ (P<0.01) and the pain recognition scores before and after treatment was also improved.(P=0.001) Conclusion: The template appliance proved to be efficient for the treatment of TMD with a closed lock and painful joint due to ADDWOR.

Methylosinus trichosporium을 이용한 메탄으로부터 메탄올 생성에 관한 연구 (Studies on Methanol Production from Methane by Methylosinus trichosporium)

  • 본 연구에서는 에탄 자화균인 Methylosinus trichosporim OB3b를 이용하여 메탄으로부터 에탄올 생성에 관한 실험을 수행하였다. 에탄으로부터 에탄올을 생성하기 위해서는 메탄 산화과정 중 두번 째 효소인 methanol dehydrogenase 효소의 활성을 부분 저해해야 하므로 이를 위해 EDTA를 사용한 결과 EDTA가 methanol dehydrogenase의 저해제 임을 확인하였고 배지에 6mM EDTA를 첨가하였을 때 전혀 첨가하지 않았을 때와 비교하여 메탄올 생 성이 약 5배 정도 증가되어 lOmmole/L의 에탄율을 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 Cu의 존재유무가 에단올 생성 에 미치는 영향을 실험한 결과 ImM Cu 존재시 $5\mu\textrm{M}$ Cu 존재하에 비해 메탄올 생성이 약 2.5배 증가되어 약 11mmole/L의 메탄올을 얻을 수 있었는데 이는 Cu 존재가 입자상(particulate) MMO의 생성을 촉 진시키며 생성된 이 세포 단위중량당 MMO 활성이 높은 pMMO가 에탄으로부터 에탄올의 생성을 촉진 시키는 것으로 생각된다. 그리고 온도가 에탄올 생 성에 미치는 영향을 실험한 결과 온도가 3TC에서 $30^{\circ}C , 25^{\circ}C$ 로 낮아점에 따라 생성 메단올 농도가 증 가하여 15.5mmole/L에 이르렀고 메탄 소비속도도 증가됨을 알 수 있였다. 또한 메단과 산소의 구생성 분비가 에탄올 생성에 미치는 영향을 실험한 결과 산소대비 에탄 농도가 증가할수록 생성 에탄올의 농 도 및 세포농도가 증가됨을 알 수 였다. 그리하여 50% 메탄, 50% 산소 존재하에 비해 70% 에탄, 30% 산소 경우에는 약 50% 증가된 15.3 mmole/L 농도의 머l단올을 얻을 수가 있였으며 세포농도도 많이 증가됨을 알 수 있다.

로제 카이와(Roger Caillois)의 놀이론을 통한 온라인 게임 고찰 (A study on MMO RPG Online Game through Roger Callois's Theory)

  • 인간과 컴퓨터와의 새로운 놀이의 수단으로 부각된 온라인 게임은 그 비중이 갈수록 커지고 있다. 온라인게임 인구의 확대에 따라 각양각색의 게임들이 출시되고 있으나 사용자들로부터 호평받는 게임은 소수에 불과한 실정이다. 따라서 온라인 게임이 사용자들을 유인하는 근원적 속성을 파악해야 하는 과제를 갖게 된다. 본연구에서는 온라인 게임의 이해를 위해 놀이에 대한 날카로운 통찰을 보여준 로제 카이와(Roger Caillois)의 놀이론을 활용하고자 한다. 카이와의 놀이론은 비록 컴퓨터 게임의 시대를 경험하지 못한 채 저술되었다 할지라도 놀이를 문화와의 상관관계에서 주목하여 인간을 열광케 하는 놀이의 영역을 4가지 범주로 분류하였다는데 최대의 가치가 있다. 4개의 놀이의 범주는 각각 경쟁, 모의, 운, 현기증과 같은 독특한 재미의 성질에 기반하여 구성된다. 아곤의 경쟁은 끊임없이 도전하여 자신의 우수성을 인정받고 싶어하는 인간의 심리, 미미크리의 모의는 가장과 가면놀이의 형태로서 연출되는 감정이입의 즐거움, 알레아의 운은 전지전능한 누군가에게 자신을 의탁하여 운명의 은혜를 기대하는 우연놀이의 확률이 주는 즐거움, 이린크스의 현기증은 정신의 혼란상태에서 의식이 마비되어 있는 순간의 쾌감을 주는 것이다. 이 연구를 통해 온라인 게임의 근원적인 재미의 원리, 흥미와 몰입을 가능하게 하는 구조로서 자극의 인플레이션을 이해하도록 한다.

Retromandibular reduction of medially dislocated condylar process fractures

  • Background Condylar process fractures account for one-third of all mandibular fractures, and the distal fragment is prone to dislocate to the medial side due to the pulling of the lateral pterygoid muscle. Retromandibular approaches are commonly used, but the intraoperative view becomes limited in medially dislocated fractures. This study summarized a series of cases of retromandibular reduction for medially dislocated condylar process fractures and described our supplementary procedure to realign the dislocated condylar process. Methods Nine patients with medially dislocated condylar process fractures underwent surgical correction from January 2012 to December 2016. In 6 of them, it was possible to realign the fractures with a conventional retromandibular approach, but for 3 cases of severe dislocation to the middle cranial fossa, a supplementary transoral procedure was carried out. The angle difference between the ramus and condyle, ramus height, and maximal mouth opening (MMO) were evaluated. Results All 9 cases were restored to the proper anatomical alignment without any major complications, and postoperative images revealed successful union. The angle difference was $8.94^{\circ}{\pm}4.11^{\circ}$ preoperatively, and $0.99{\pm}0.49^{\circ}$ at the 6-month follow-up. The pretreatment ramus height difference was $6.12{\pm}6.09mm$, and the postoperative difference was $0.18{\pm}0.10mm$. These changes after surgery were statistically significant. The MMO before surgery was $11.44{\pm}3.0mm$, and the postoperative MMO was $37.2{\pm}2.9mm$, reflecting a significant increase after reduction. Conclusions Retromandibular reduction is a useful method in medially dislocated condylar process fractures, and additional transoral assistance should be considered to realign condylar processes that severely dislocate to the middle cranial fossa.

당뇨환자를 위한 올리고당 첨가 콩 아이스크림 : 품질특성과 당뇨 흰쥐에서의 혈당 및 지질 개선에 미치는 효과 (Oligosaccharide-Supplemented Soy Ice Cream for Diabetic Patients : Quality Characteristics and Effects on Blood Sugar and Lipids in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate not only quality characteristics such as overrun, meltdown and sensory evaluation of oligosaccharide-supplemented soy ice cream but also physiological effects of ice cream with soy and/or oligosaccharide on blood sugar and lipid profile in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Powder of parched soybean was added at $7.6\%$ replacing skimmed milk and cream, soybean oil at $7.6\%$ replacing milk oil in cream, and fructooli-gosaccharide at $9.5\%$ replacing sucrose on weight basis. Five kinds of ice cream were prepared: MMS (skimmed milk, milk oil, sucrose), MMO (skimmed milk, milk oil, oligosaccharide), SSS (soybean, soybean oil, sucrose), SSO (soybean, soybean oil, oligosaccharide), and BSO (black soybean, soybean oil, oligosaccharide). Overrun and meltdown of soy ice cream were significantly lower than those of milk ice cream. Scores of sensory evaluation especially in mouth feel and melting feel in mouth were lower in soy ice cream. Freeze-dried ice cream was supplemented to AIN93-based diets at $30\%$(w/w). Sprague-Dawley male rats with diabetes induced by injecting streptozotocin were fed experimental diets for 4 weeks. Plasma glucose level was significantly lowered in SSO group compared with MMS group. Plasma insulin levels of MMO and SSO groups were not significantly different from that of normal group, while those of MMS and SSO group were significantly lower than normal group. Plasma cholesterol was decreased in groups fed ice cream supplemented either soybean or fructooligosaccharide compared to MMS group. HDL-cholesterol level was elevated and triglyceride was decreased significantly in MMO group compared to MMS group. LDL-cholesterol levels of SSS and BSO groups and liver triglyceride level of SSO group were significantly lower compared to MMS group. In conclusion, oligosaccharide-supplemented soy ice cream lowered blood sugar, and ice cream supplemented with soybean and/or oligosaccharide improved lipid profile in diabetic rats.

Electron Transfer to Hydroxylase through Component Interactions in Soluble Methane Monooxygenase

  • The hydroxylation of methane (CH4) is crucial to the field of environmental microbiology, owing to the heat capacity of methane, which is much higher than that of carbon dioxide (CO2). Soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO), a member of the bacterial multicomponent monooxygenase (BMM) superfamily, is essential for the hydroxylation of specific substrates, including hydroxylase (MMOH), regulatory component (MMOB), and reductase (MMOR). The diiron active site positioned in the MMOH α-subunit is reduced through the interaction of MMOR in the catalytic cycle. The electron transfer pathway, however, is not yet fully understood due to the absence of complex structures with reductases. A type II methanotroph, Methylosinus sporium 5, successfully expressed sMMO and hydroxylase, which were purified for the study of the mechanisms. Studies on the MMOH-MMOB interaction have demonstrated that Tyr76 and Trp78 induce hydrophobic interactions through π-π stacking. Structural analysis and sequencing of the ferredoxin domain in MMOR (MMOR-Fd) suggested that Tyr93 and Tyr95 could be key residues for electron transfer. Mutational studies of these residues have shown that the concentrations of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and iron ions are changed. The measurements of dissociation constants (Kds) between hydroxylase and mutated reductases confirmed that the binding affinities were not significantly changed, although the specific enzyme activities were significantly reduced by MMOR-Y93A. This result shows that Tyr93 could be a crucial residue for the electron transfer route at the interface between hydroxylase and reductase.

Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b를 이용한 2단계 CSTR/살수층 생물막 반응기에서 기상의 trichloroethylene(TCE) 분해 (Gas-phase TCE Degradation in a Two-stage CSTR/TBR System Using Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b)

  • 본 연구에서는 난분해성 물질인 기상의 TCE를 효과적으로 처리하기 위하여 CSTR과 TBR을 연결한 2단계 생물막 반응기를 제작ㆍ운전하였다. TBR에는 TCE 분해능이 탁월한 메탄자화균인 Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b를 활성탄에 고정화시켰고, 기상의 TCE를 유입부에 연속적으로 공급하여 분해시켰다. 개발된 반응기 시스템의 효율을 조사하기 위해 다양한 운전조건에서 TCE 분해속도, TCE 전화율 및 cMMO 활성변화 등을 조사하였다. 여러 가지의 유입부 TCE 농도에서 운전한 결과 80 $\mu$mol/L의 고농도까지 처리가 가능함을 알 수 있었고, TCE를 포함한 기체의 유속을 변화시켰을 때 유속이 증가함에 따라 낮은 유속(50~200 mL/min)에서는 직선적으로 TCE를 분해속도 및 전화율이 증가하다가 높은 유속(200~600 mL/min)에서는 일정하게 유지되었다. TBR의 온도를 달리하였을 때, 2$0^{\circ}C$의 낮은 온도에서 3$0^{\circ}C$의 높은 온도보다 TCE 전화율 및 분해속도가 증가되어 TBR에서의 TCE 분해반응이 물질전달 저해를 받음을 알 수 있었다. CSTR에서의 희석속도가 낮으면 TCE 분해속도와 전화율의 감소 및 sMMO 활성 저하 현상이 일어남을 관측할 수 있었고, TBR에서 TCE 분해 과정에서 불활성화된 sMMO 및 세포 활성을 효과적으로 재활성화시키기 위해서는 CSTR의 희석속도를 높이 유지해야함을 알 수 있었다. 약 270일 이상의 운전기간 동안 운전조건을 다양하게 변경시켜도 매우 안정되게 시스템이 유지됨을 알 수 있었고, 최고분해속도는 525 mg TCE/Lㆍday 정도로 높아 개발된 2단계 CSTR/TBR 시스템의 우수성을 알 수 있었다.
