Annual variation of the surface mixed layer depth (MLD) in the southern part of the Sea of Japan is investigated based upon the oceanographic and meteorological data taken during 1971∼1975 by the Fisheries Research and Development Agency and the Central Meteorological Office of Korea. It is found that the variation of the MLD is strongly correlated with the heat exchange between the atmosphere and sea. The MLD and heat flux vary within ranges comparable to those in the Kuroshio region found by Bathen(1972) and Wyrtki(1965)

The sonic layer depth (SLD) variability is important for understanding the acoustic properties of the upper ocean that influence acoustic communications, acoustic tomography, and naval operations related to searching and detecting marine underwater vessels. Generally, the SLD is the acoustical equivalent of the mixed layer depth (MLD), although they are defined differently. In this study the SLD was compared with the MLD over the annual cycle in the East Sea using an available set of temperature-salinity observation profiles. For the comparison, various definitions and methods of the MLD had applied. As a result, the SLD in the East Sea is slight similar to the curvature method applied MLD, but the other MLD have severe differences with the SLD. Futhermore, a parabolic equation transmission model is used to evaluate the cutoff frequency trapped in surface duct. It follow that there is an optimum frequency for propagation at which the loss of sound is minimum.
One-dimensional numerical model is implemented to investigate temperature variations in the mixed layer depth (MLD) with the passage of typhoons. In the model, we assume a non-divergent, infinite ocean and consider wind effects only, excluding isostatic effects (inverse barometric effects) and upwelling with vertical movement of the water column. Numerical experiments investigate the effects of typhoon tracks on temperature variations, including their dependence on vertical resolutions in the MLD and these results are compared with those in a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). The model reproduces features of the observed temperature variations in the MLD fairly well, and implies that wind effects, rather than isostatic effects, play a predominant role in temporal and spatial temperature variations in the MLD. After the passage of typhoons, however, the model does not reproduce well the temperature variations observed in the MLD, because a limitation of the model is its inability to reproduce events such as cyclonic eddy formation (Hong et al., 2011; Masuda and Hong, 2011). The model also shows well the so called 'rightward bias' (Price, 1981) of sea surface cooling which is the most predominant in the right hand side of typhoon's track.
Seasonal variation of phytoplankton was investigated with surface mixed layer ecosystem model in the East Sea. The model consisted of four compartments (phytoplankton, zooplankton, nutrient, detritus) forced by mixed layer depths, photosynthetically available radiation and nutrient concentrations. From model results we estimated entrainment rate $2.5-4.0\;m{\cdot}day^{-1}$ to reproduce the two annual blooms, and reproduced seasonal variation of phytoplankton at southern and northern regions by the difference of surface winter mixed layer depth (MLD) using the entrainment rate value $3.0\;m{\cdot}day^{-1}$. The spring blooms in the southern and northern regions closely related to deepening of a winter surface MLD. In the southern region where MLD was shallow and phytoplankton spring bloom occurs one month in advance to the northern region where MLD was deep. The amount of light increases within the MLD during the onset of stratification and water temperature increases faster in spring in the southern region than the northern region. Decrease of phytoplankton was mainly affected by zooplankton grazing in the southern region and by nutrient exhaustion in the northern region. The fall bloom in the two regions was caused by the nutrient availability and entrainment on the phytoplankton.
Northern Arabian Sea (NAS) between $17^{\circ}N-20.5^{\circ}N$ and $59^{\circ}E-69^{\circ}E$ was observed by using Argo float daily data fur about 9 months, from April 2002 through December 2002. Results showed that during April - May mixed layer shoaled due to light winds, clear sky and intense solar insolation. Sea surface temperature (SST) rose by $2.3^{\circ}C$ and ocean gained an average of 99.8 $Wm^{-2}$. Mixed layer reached maximum depth of about 71 m during June - September owing to strong winds and cloudy skies. Ocean gained abnormally low $\sim18Wm^{-2}$ and SST dropped by $3.4^{\circ}C$. During the inter monsoon period, October, mixed layer shoaled and maintained a depth of 20 to 30 m. November - December was accompanied by moderate winds, dropping of SST by $1.5^{\circ}C$ and ocean lost an average of 52.5 $Wm^{-2}$. Mixed layer deepened gradually reaching a maximum of 62 m in December. Analysis of surface fluxes and winds suggested that winds and fluxes are the dominating factors causing deepening of mixed layer during summer and winter monsoon periods respectively. Relatively big]h correlation between MLD, net heat flux and wind speed revealed that short term variability of MLD coincided well with short term variability of surface forcing.
Ocean mixed layer (OML) depth affects diurnal cycle of sea surface temperature (SST) induced by change of solar radiation absorption and heat budget in ocean. The diurnal SST variation can lead to convection over the ocean, which can impact on localized precipitation both over coastal and inland. In this study, we investigate the OML characteristics affecting the diurnal cycle of SST for the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas. To analyze OML characteristics, HYCOM oceanic mixed layer depth (MLD) and wind field at 10 m from ERA-interim during 2008~2016 are used. In the winter, MLD is deeply formed when the strong wind field is located on perpendicular to continental slope over deep seafloor areas. Besides, cooling SST-induced vertical mixing in OML is reinforced by dry cold air originated from Siberia. The OML in summer is shallowly distributed about 20 m. In order to estimate the impact of OML model in high resolution NWP model, four experimental simulations are performed. At this time, the prognostic scheme of skin SST is applied in NWP to simulate diurnal SST. The simulation results show that CNTL (off-OML) overestimates diurnal cycle of SST, while EXPs (on-OML) indicate similar results to observations. The prediction performance for precipitation of EXPs shows improvement compared with CNTL over coastal as well as inland. This results suggest that the application of the OML model in summer season can contribute to improving the prediction for performance of SST and precipitation over coastal area and inland.
We investigated seasonal variations of the upper ocean temperature and the mixed layer depth (MLD) in an eddy-permitting global ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to assess the OGCM perfermance. The OGCM is based on the GFDL MOM3 which has a horizontal resolution of 0.5 degree and 30 vertical levels. The OGCM was integrated for 68 years using a monthly-mean climatological wind stress forcing. The model sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity were restored to the Levitus climatology with a time scale of 30 days. Annual-mean model SST shows a cold bias $(<\;-2^{\circ}C)$ in the summer hemisphere and a warm bias $(>\;1^{\circ}C)$ in the winter hemisphere mainly due to the restoring boundary condition of temperature. The model MLD captures well the observed features in most areas, with a slightly deep bias. However, in the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea, the model shows significantly deeper MLD than the climatology-mainly due to weak salinity stratifications in the model. For amplitude of seasonal variation, the model SST is smaller $(1{\sim}3^{\circ}C)$ than the observation largely due to the restoring surface boundary condition while the model MLD has larger seasonal variation $({\sim}50m)$. It is suggested that for more realistic simulation of the upper ocean structure in the present eddy-permitting ocean model, more refinements in the surface boundary condition for the thermohaline forcing and parameterization for vertical mixing are required, together with the incorporation of a sea-ice model.
We collected information on seasonal and interannual variability of surface chlorophyll a concentration between 1997-2007 from the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Satellite data were used to acquire chlorophyll a and sea surface temperature from six regions: East Sea/Ulleung Basin, East China Sea, Philippin Sea, Warm Pool region, Warm Pool North region, and Warm Pool East region. Mixed layer depth (MLD) was calculated from temperature profiles of ARGO floats data in four of the six regions during 2002-2007. In the East Sea/Ulleung Basin, seasonal variability of chlorophyll a concentration was attributed to seasonal change of MLD, while there was no significant relationship between chlorophyll a concentration and MLD in the Warm Pool region. Interannual anomaly in sea surface temperature were similar among the East Sea, East China Sea, Philippin Sea, and Warm Pool North region. The anomaly pattern was reversed in the Warm Pool East region. However, the anomaly pattern in the Warm Pool region was intermediate of the two patterns. In relation to chlorophyll a, there was a reversed interannual anomaly pattern between Warm Pool North and Warm Pool East, while the anomaly pattern in the Warm Pool region was similar to that of Warm Pool North except for the El $Ni\tilde{n}o$ years (1997/1998, 2002/2003, 2006/2007). However, there was no distinct relationship among other seas. Interestingly, in the Warm Pool and Warm Pool East regions, sea surface temperature showed a pronounced inverse pattern with chlorophyll a. This indicates a strong interrelationship among sea surface temperature-MLD-chlorophyll a in the regions. In the Warm Pool and Warm Pool East, zonal distribution of chlorophyll a concentration within the past 10 years has shown a good relationship with sea surface temperature which reflects ENSO variability.
To investigate a short-term (from 2 hours to 24 hours) variability of a mixed layer, oceanographical data (water temperature, salinity, current) and meteorological data (wind, air temperature, solar radiation) were collected at a site in the Korea Strait at the interval of one hour for 48 hours from October 12 to 14, 1993. The average rates of temporal variations of the mixed layer depth (MLD) and temperature of the mixed layer (MLT), which are very weakly correlated with the wind stress and buoyancy flux at the sea surface, are about 5.2 m/hour and 0.2$^{\circ}C$/hour, respectively. The mixed layer is relatively shallow when both MLT and MLS (salinity of the mixed layer) are low, while MLD is relatively deep when they are high. MLT shows a sudden decrease or increase. Analysis of satellite infrared images and XBT data shows that sudden increase of MLT is caused by advection of warm water. These results suggest that the short-term variation of the mixed layer in the Korea Strait in autumn, in which surface current is relatively strong and different water masses exist, is mainly determined by advection rather than air0sea interaction such as wind stress or buoyancy flux.

This study investigates effects of three different parameterizations of vertical mixing scheme on upper ocean simulation of the East Sea, focusing on the seasonal variations of the sea surface temperature(SST) and the mixed layer depth(MLD) using an ocean general circulation model(GFDL MOM1.1). The considered vertical mixing schemes are the Laplacian scheme(L scheme) that use a constant eddy coefficient, the Mellor-Yamada scheme(MY scheme), and a new scheme(Noh scheme). The Noh scheme, a second-order turbulence closure, was developed considering recent observational evidences such as the enhancement of turbulent kinetic energy near the sea surface. During summer L scheme underestimates the SST, while MY scheme overestimates the SST, compared to climatological SST. Noh scheme produces the SST in better agreement with climatological one. During winter all schemes overestimate the SST up to $4^{\circ}C$ compared to climatological SST. Vertical profiles of the basin-mean temperature show that L scheme produces higher temperature below the thermocline than those of other schemes. The winter MLD simulated from L scheme is rather large compared to that from other schemes, but the differences in MLD during summer are not significant.
