Use of Software Agent Technology in Management Information System: A Literature Review and Classification

  • Technological innovations over the years have accentuated the workings in corporate- connected organizations and different application platforms. Hence, a unified management information system (MIS) that can utilize the Web and propel programming developments is required. Software agents, the latest developments in computer software technology, can be utilized to rapidly and effortlessly build integrated information systems. Consequently, 59 research papers on the use of software agents in MIS were identified from top 40 MIS journals published between 2007 and 2017. Then, we reviewed and classified all the research papers according to two categories: application fields and application categories. The application fields consisted of eight sub-groups: manufacturing, telecommunication systems, traffic and transportation management, information filtering and gathering, electronic commerce, business process management, entertainment, and medical care; whereas the application categories consisted of three sub-groups: multi-agent systems, personal assistants, and multi-agent simulation. The research papers were further divided into journal and year of publication, and journal and application field. The objective of our research was to understand the trend of the use software agent technology in MIS by examining the published research paper beside to add knowledge and content to the information system academic discipline.

Safety Ontology Modeling and Verification on MIS of Ship-Building and Repairing Enterprise

  • Shipbuilding and repairing enterprise has the characteristics of many hazards and accidents. Therefore, the safety management ability of shipbuilding and repairing MIS (management information system) must be effectively guaranteed. The verification on safety management is the necessary measure to ensure and improve the safety management ability of MIS. Safety verification can not only increase the safety of MIS, but also make early warning of potential risks in management to avoid the accidents. Based on the authoritative standards in the field of safety in shipbuilding and repairing enterprise, this paper applied modeling and verification method based on ontology to safety verification of MIS, extracted the concepts and associations from related safety standards to construct axiom set to support safety verification on MIS of shipbuilding and repairing enterprise. Then, this paper developed the corresponding safety ontology modeling and verification tool-SOMVT. By the application and comparison of two examples, this paper effectively verified the safety of MIS to prove the modeling method and the SOMVT can improve the safety of MIS in a much more effective and stable way to traditional manual analysis.

STRATEGY-ORIENTED EVALUATION OF MIS

  • Performance evaluation is essential for the successful management and operation of MIS. The more MIS grows and relevant investment enlarges, the more performance evaluation grows in importance. However, MIS managers as well as top management still have difficulty in evaluating the performance of MIS. This arises from various reasons, such as the specialty of MIS, diversified influences of MIS, multidimensionality of evaluation items, and the difference between evaluation levels. In this paper, MIS is understood in a broad sense. MIS's scope is of a very wide range from each application system to system innovation view. The MIS should support the firm's objectives, and, consequently, MIS evaluation should be implemented at corporate level, not merely at application system level. The most critical problem of MIS evaluation is that a systematic frame covering various viewpoints and factors of MIS evaluation does not exist. Not a single measure covers all aspects of MIS evaluation. To help resolve this problem, this paper proposes an hierarchical approach for practical use that includes most aspects of evaluation approaches from previous studies, and, furthermore, emphasizes the evaluation of strategic aspects of MIS.

MIS 평가 유형과 MIS 성과 간의 상황적 관계에 관한 연구 (Contingent Analysis of the Relationship between Evaluation type and MIS Performance)

  • The most critical problem of MIS evaluation is the lack of the systematic framework to cover various factors and viewpoints. To solve this problem, this study takes the multi-level and contingent approach to performance evaluation, composed of three levels: evaluating the contribution of MIS to an organization [strategy level]; evaluating the activities of MIS department or MIS function as an organizational sub-function through the overall MIS lifecycle [function level]; and evaluating the quality or productivity of the application systems as MIS outputs [system level]. Ideal MIS evaluation should include all three levels of the hierarchy with balanced importance. However, MIS evaluationcanbedividedintothreetypes,suchasstrategy-oriented, function-oriented and system-oriented evaluation, depending on the focus and emphasis of evaluation. The usage pattern of each evaluation type is analyzed according to contingent variables of MIS evaluation such as MIS maturity, information intensity and firm size, and top management's intent. It is also found that the firms of higher MIS maturity and top management's intent use the strategy-oriented evaluation type, and the firms with strategy-oriented evaluation type show a higher MIS performance. Further, MIS maturity and top management's intent show contingent effects between evaluation type and MIS performance. Some managerial implications can be drawn based on the results of the study. First, strategy-oriented evaluation of MIS is more important as many firms more often use information technology as a strategic weapon. Second, MIS performance varies with evaluation type. Therefore, the design of MIS evaluation framework should be done carefully in the strategic and managerial contexts. Third, firms are recommend to use a different evaluation type according to organizational characteristics such as MIS maturity and information intensity.

경영정보학분야의 계량서지학적 분석 (Bibliometric Analysis on MIS Research)

  • Thie study examines MIS researchers, research themes, methodology, and intellectual structure in order to analyze general research patterns in the field of MIS. The methods used for this study are subject analysis of the journal articles, citation analysis, and author co-citation analysis, The source articles are all the papers in $\lceil$Journal of Korean MIS Society$\rfloor$ and MIS papers in $\lceil$Korean Management Review$\rfloor$ and $\lceil$Journal of Korean MS/OR Society$\rfloor$. In results, core journals in MIS are MIS Quarterly, Management Science, and Communications of ACM. Core authors inlcude Ives, DeSanctis, Ginzberg, Lucas, Rockart, and Davis. The major areas in Korean MIS research turn out to be information system management, DSS/GDSS strategic information systems and AI applications.

  • MIS personnel should not only be capable of developing technically sounded systems, but also act as the companion role of strategic management. For this reason, it is important to direct efficient human resource management for MIS personnel. For directing efficient MIS human resource management, this paper studies the relationship of major types of MIS career orientation, job satisfaction and organizational commitment based on the work area of MIS personnel, Based on the empirical analysis using questionnaires answered from MIS personnel of Korean public and private enterprises, the hypotheses of this study were proved. The result of this research shows most of the domestic MIS personnel tends to line up with technology and management favoritism for their career orientation. If an individual career orientation and his or her work area are matched, it presents higher job satisfaction. Furthermore, a group of management orientation shows higher organizational commitment than a group of technology arientation among MIS personnel with identical job satisfaction. Therefore, this study suggests that career orientation of MIS personnel affect the job satisfaction and organizational commitment. In the future, a career management system suitable to the MIS personnel should be developed to improve the effectiveness of MIS organization.

농업 정보 시스템 개발을 위한 정보 요구 분석 전략 (Strategies for Information Requirements Analysis for Agricultural Management Information System Developments)

  • This study proposes strategies for information requirements analysis (IRA) for successful agricultural management information system (MIS) development. The study frist defines IRA based on literature review and emphasizes the importance of IRA by its position in SDLC (System Developments Life Cycle). Then, the study reviews fifteen cases of agricultural MIS development projects appeared in the report of all the MIS related ARPC(Agricultural R&D Promotion Center) projects from 1995 to 1998 and finds that IRA is not properly performed in most of the projects. Finally, this study proposes seven strategies for IRA for successful agricultural MIS development based on the finding of this study and those from the literature related to IRA methods.

  • 최근 정보기술의 급격한 발달과 함께 정보시스템의 개념과 역할에도 많은 변화가 나타나고 있다. 더불어 정보시스템의 효과적인 관리와 운영을 위해서는 보다 체계적인 MIS 평가가 요청되고 있는 실정이다. 이전부터 MIS 평가에 관한 많은 연구들이 이루어져 왔으나, 관점의 다양성과 MIS의 도입성과의 포괄성으로 인해 MIS 평가를 위한 사용자 만족도가 개별 시스템에서 산출되는 결과물에 대한 평가로 국한되어왔다. 이에 본 연구에서는 기존의 MIS 평가에 관한 연구들을 기초로 변화된 MIS를 종합적으로 평가할 수 있는 개념적인 프레임워크를 제시하였다. 즉 MIS도입으로 인한 결과물에 대한 사용자 만족도 및 조직 전체의 변화에 대한 만족도 등 기존의 MIS 평가에서 제시된 다양한 관점과 평가방법을 종합하여 새로운 평가 프레임워크를 제시하였다.

원자력분야 학술정보 통합정보관리시스템 구현에 관한 연구 (A Research on the Implementation and Estimation of an Integrated System for Information Management in the Field of Nuclear Science and Engineering)

  • 본 연구는 정부의 원자력 분야 정보 인프라 구축사업의 지원으로 이루어진 연구로서 한국원자력연구소가 국가 원자력 정보센터로서의 기능을 적극 수행하기 위하여 원자력분야 학술정보통합정보관리시스템인 NUCLIS21(Nuclear Information System21)을 구축한 프로젝트이다. 본 시스템은 웹기반의 이용자 중심 단일 인터페이스를 제공하여 국가 원자력 분야 정보기반구축은 물론 기존 정보센터의 정보관리시스템을 개선하는데 목적이 있다. 또한 구축된 시스템은 원자력 분야 학술정보 통합정보관리시스템으로서 크게 두 가지로 먼저 경영정보시스템(MIS)과의 연계모듈과 6개의 하위시스템으로 즉, OPAC과 연동되는 통합검색 시스템, My Library 시스템, 정보수집 시스템, 편목 시스템, 정보제공 시스템, 연속간행물 시스템으로 구성된다. 그 특징은 경영정보시스템(MIS)과 연계하여 연구 프로젝트 등 연구관련 정보를 반입하여 관련 정보를 제공함으로써 이용자의 연구 주제별 맞춤정보, 상호작용, 후속 서비스 등이 가능하도록 구성하였다. 구축결과 시스템의 평가는 만족도를 조사하였는데 이용자 만족도는 정보제공의 충실성은 75.7% (200명), 신속성은 62.1% (164명), 편리성은 78.4% (207명)가 대부분 만족한다고 응답하여 전체적인 시스템 만족도는 비교적 높게 나타났다.

"경영정보학연구"의 연구 다양성 평가 (An Empirical Study on Research Diversity in "Journal of MIS Research")

  • This study assessed diversity in MIS research by examining 357 articles published in Journal of MIS Research from 1991 to 2003. The classification system developed by Vessey et al.(2002) was employed to examine research diversity of the articles. The classification system comprises four key characteristics of diversity such as research topic, research method, level of analysis, and reference discipline. The results of our study were also compared with Vessey et al,(2002)'s results to address problems in current MIS research and to suggest some recommendations for the future MIS research in Korea.
