In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, linear channel estimation algorithms are widely applied owing to their simple structures. However, they may cause pilot contamination, which affects the subsequent data detection performance. Therefore, herein, for an uplink multicell massive multiuser MIMO system, we consider using an alternating projection (AP) for channel estimation to eliminate the effect of pilot contamination and improve the performance of data detection in terms of the bit error rates as well. Even though the AP is nonlinear, it iteratively searches the best solution in only one dimension, and the computational complexity is thus modest. We have analyzed the mean square error with respect to the signal-to-interference ratios for both the cooperative and non-cooperative multicell scenarios. From the simulation results, we observed that the channel estimation results via the AP benefit the following signal detection more than that via the least squares for both the cooperative and non-cooperative multicell scenarios.

In this letter, we propose an efficient near-optimal detection scheme (that makes use of a generalized sphere decoder (GSD)) for blind multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. In practical MU-MIMO systems, a receiver suffers from interference because the precoding matrix, the result of the precoding technique used, is quantized with limited feedback and is thus imperfect. The proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performance with low complexity by using a GSD to detect several additional interference signals. In addition, the proposed scheme is suitable for use in blind systems.

In this paper, we analyze the symbol error rate (SER) performance of maximum likelihood (ML) joint detection in downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems by deriving a tight union bound on the symbol error rate (SER). The union bound for ML joint detection is utilized to demonstrate the performance of MIMO MC-CDMA systems quantitatively in multiuser and frequency selective Rayleigh fading environments. An analysis of the diversity order of the systems shows the effects of multiple users, spread subcarriers, and multiple antennas on the ML joint detection performance. Furthermore, the analysis shows that MIMO MC-CDMA systems without full loading can achieve more diversify than MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.

An important drawback in Lattice Reduction (LR) aided detectors has been investigated. For the solution, an improved LR aided detection with ignorable complexity overhead is proposed for MIMO system, where the additional correction operation is performed for the case of unreliable symbol decision. We found that LR aided detection errors mainly occur when the lattice points after the inverse lattice transform in the final step fall outside the constellation point set. In the proposed scheme, we check whether or not the lattice point obtained through LR detection is out of constellation. Only for the case of out of constellation, we additionally perform ML search with reduced search region restricted to the neighboring points near to the obtained lattice points. Using this approach, we can effectively and significantly improve the detection performance with just a slight complexity overhead which is negligible compared to full searched ML scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves the detection performance near to that of the ML detection with a lower computational complexity.

In this paper, we propose an iterative soft dimension reduction based multi-input multi-output (MIMO) detection for coded spatial multiplexing system. In spite of better performance of iterative MIMO detection, its computational complexity gives a significant burden to the receivers. To mitigate this problem, we propose a scheme employing all ordering successive interference cancellation (AOSIC) for hard-decision detection and dimension reduction soft demodulator (DRSD) with iterative decoding for soft-decision detectors, respectively. This scheme can reduce complexity of iterative soft MIMO detection and provide better performance than other conventional detectors.
This paper describes a VLSI implementation of BLAST detection for MIMO-OFDM systems. To achieve high speed requirement, we propose the fully pipeline architecture for BLAST structure. This design is implemented using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. For a 4-transmit and 4-receive antennas system, it takes $7.5{\mu}s$ to calculate nulling vector and detection order from 48 channel matrixes.
In this paper, binary pulse-position modulation (2PPM) time-hoping (TH) ultra-wideband (UWB) system is applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system using vertical bell lab layered space-time (V-BLAST) structure to achieve high-data-rate communications. This UWB-MIMO system and its receivers are analyzed, and its BER performances are evaluated. In the receiver, various MIMO detection algorithms such as zero-forcing (ZF), ZF-ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC), minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE), MMSE-OSIC and maximum likelihood (ML) are comparatively studied.

Spatial multiuser access is investigated for the reverse link of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In particular, we consider two alternative a aches to spatial multiuser access that adopt the same detection algorithm at the base station: one is a closed-loop approach based on singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel matrix, whereas the other is an open-loop approach based in space-time block coding (STBC). We develop multiuser detection algorithms for these two spatial multiuser access schemes based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Then, we compare the bit error rate (BER) performance of the two schemes and a single-user MIMO scheme. Interestingly, it is found that the STBC approach can provide much better BER performance than the SVD approach as well as than a single-user MIMO scheme.

In next generation wireless communication systems based on OFDM, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is adopted in order to achieve high data throughput with limited bandwidth. As one of MIMO techniques, spatial multiplexing scheme needs high performance data detection algorithm that can be performed with low computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can compute QRM-MLD with reduced complexity. Also, hybrid detection technique is proposed, which can reduce the complexity by selecting between MMSE and QRM-MLD according to the channel condition. The proposed algorithm provides the trade-off between performance and complexity. The computer simulations for downlink transmission in 3GPP LTE system show that less than 0.1dB performance degradation can be achieved at 0.1% BER with 59% reduction on computational complexity compared with the conventional QRM-MLD algorithm.

In spatially multiplexed MIMO systems that enable high data rate transmission over wireless communication channels, the spatial demultiplexing at the receiver is a challenging task, and various demultiplexing methods have been developed recently by many researchers. Among the previous methods, maximum likelihood detection with QR decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MM)), and sphere decoding (SD) schemes have been reported to achieve a (near) maximum likelihood (ML) performance. In this paper, we propose a novel signal detection method that achieves a near ML performance in a computationally efficient manner. The proposed method is demonstrated via a set of computer simulations that the proposed method achieves a near ML performance while requiring a complexity that is comparable to that of the conventional MMSE-OSIC. We also show that the log likelihood ratio (LLR) values for all bits are obtained without additional calculation but as byproduct in the proposed detection method, while in the previous QRM-MLD, SD, additional computation is necessary after the hard decision for LLR calculation.
