  • This work focused on the degradation of natural organic matter (NOM) present in lake water using a combined pkotocatalysisimicrofiltration (MF) process. The system performances were investigated in terms of organic removal efficiency and membrane permeability. The addition of iron oxide particles (IOP) into the photocatalytic membrane reactor improved initial NOM removal by sorption, but during photocatalysis the removal efficiency was reversed, probably due to the scattering of UV light by IOP. The modification of TiO$_2$ surfaces by IOP deposition was conducted to enhance the photocatalytic NOM removal efficiency. A minimal amount of Impregnation of IOP on TiO$_2$ surfaces was required to prevent the light scattering effect as well. The coating of MF membranes with IOP helped to improve the NOM removal efficiency while sorbing NOM by IOP. Regardless of tile operating conditions and particles addition examined, no significant fouling was occurring at a flux of 15 L/$m^2$-h during entire MF operation.

  • This study aims at an assessment of the effectiveness of taste & odor removal and transmembrane pressure changes in a pilot membrane plant(500m3/day) by adding PAC to MF process, and at providing a basis for applying it to the advanced water treatment process. The transmembrane pressure showed, in low turbidity of raw water, a tendency to decrease when PAC was injected at the Flux of 1, $1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$, while it increased in high Flux($1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$) in high turbidity of raw water. in addtion, it is shown that the fouling could be reduced more when PAC is injected together with appropriate amount of coagulant, than when PAC is solely injected. Taste & Odor-causing 2-MIB may not be detected in membrane filtered water, if the amount of PAC injection is increased in accordance with the increasing concentration of 2-MIB. Hence, PAC injection, as a pre-treatment process in MF membrane filtering, is supposed to be a suitable process for reducing fouling as well as for improvement effectiveness of taste & odor treatment.

  • Recently, the interest in NDMA(N-nitrosodimethylamine) has increased due to its recognition as a pollutant by Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy and California Department of Health Sciences. It is, in fact, one of the DBPs(Disinfection By-products) which appears due to chlorination and is reported to be fatal if exposed continuously to human body. Due to uncertainty in mechanism to remove it, its treatment is not yet carried out. In this experiment, treatment of biological NDMA is carried out by letting it adsorbed on Granular Sludge and then filtering the medium through MF(Microfiltration) and UF(Ultrafiltration) membranes. Granular Sludge is adapted to aerobic and anaerobic conditions for 7 days and the experimental conditions are MLSS of 8000mg/L, COD of 250mg/L, TN of 12.5mg/L, and TP of 2.5mg/L. Several batch tests were carried out and samples were collected with the interval of 1 hour. Samples were measured by LSC(Liquid scintillation counter) after filtering by MF and UF. In batch test with granular sludge the permeate concentrations(removal efficiencies) of NDMA by MF and UF were 71.7ng/L(32.0%) and 62.0ng/L(43.7%) at aerobic state, and 52.0ng/L(49.2%) and 47.6ng/L(58.9%) at anaerobic state, respectively. Hence, UF membrane showed about 10% more removal efficiency than MF and removal efficiency at anaerobic condition was 15% more than that at aerobic condition.

  • We performed periodic water-back-flushing using permeate water to minimize membrane fouling to enhance permeate flux in tubular ceramic microfiltration system for water treatment of high turbid source. The filtration time (FT) = 2 min with periodic 6 sec water-back-flushing showed the highest value of dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$), and the lowest value of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), and we acquired the highest total permeate volume $(V_T)\;=\;6.805L$. Also in the result of BT effect at fixed FT = 10 min and BT (back-flushing time) = 20 sec showed the lowest value of $R_f$ and the highest value of $J/J_o$, and we could obtain the highest $V_T\;=\;6.660\;L$. Consequently, FT = 2 min and BT = 6 sec could be the optimal condition in water treatment of high turbid source above 10 NTU. However, FT = 10 min and BT = 20 sec was superior to reduce operating costs because of lower back-flushing frequency. Then the average quality of water treated by our tubular ceramic MF system was turbidity of 0.07 NTU, $COD_{Mn}$ of 1.86 mg/L and $NH_3-N$ of 0.007 mg/L.

  • In this work, Aqueous sericin solution was prepared by degumming process with electrolytic reduction water. Then, the microfiltration and ultrafiltration systems were applied to the concentration of aqueous sericin solution. The objective of this study was to select the optimum operating condition among the different pressure. The permeate flux and rejection ratio were observed with time, pressure, flow rate and concentration. and, the wastewater and permeated water quality values such as pH, BOD, COD, and NH levels were measured. In order to see the influence of electrolytic reduction water, the flux of pure water and electrolytic reduction water by PVDF22(MF) and PS100(UF) membrane was measured. In microfiltration system, the relative flux reduction decreased rapidly to 0.02 in the 30min, as the concentration polarization and gel layer formation were increased. and then the sericin concentration rejection ratio was 40%. In ultrafiltration system, the permeate flux decreased with time and concentration, and increased with the operating pressure and flow rate. Optimal condition in PS100 membrane system for sericin concentration was operating pressure 1.464kgf/$cm^24, operating flow rate $7\ell/min at\; 40^{\circ}C$. At that time, sericin concentration rejection ratio was 83% respectably. The sericin solution was concentrated from 0.1wt% solution to 0.2 wt % solution during about 2 hrs by the UF filteration membrane system.

  • Chemically stable Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexa-fluoropropane (PVDF-HFP) copolymer asymmetric membranes were prepared by the conventional phase inversion process, using Dimethyacetamide (DMAc) as a solvent and water as a non-solvent. To control the pore size and porosity of the PVDF-HFP membranes, tetra-ethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as a pore-forming agent. The prepared membranes were characterized, using several analytical methods such as Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), Field Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FESEM). TEOS turned out to increase porosity and make homogeneous pores on the membranes. Depending on the composition of the dope solutions, the pore size was ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 ${\mu}m$. The flux of the PVDF-HFP membranes prepared by using TEOS as a pore forming agent was increased substantially without much decrease in the rejection. When 15 wt% PVDF-HFP solution was blended with 13 wt% TEOS solution at composition ratio of 70/30 in wt%, the water flux at 2 bars was about 2 $m^3/m^2day$.

  • The membrane processes that are commonly uscd in water and wastewater treatment are reverse osmosis (Ro), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF), which utilize pressure differentials. There is also nano-filtration (NF), or low-pressure reverse osmosis, which is positioned midway between conventional reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. Reverse osmosis membranes reject dissolved ions, while ultrafiltration can be used to reject relatively larger molecules, such as protein, polysacchalides and so on. Microfiltration is capable of eliminating particles at submicron level. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MSAS process first, as it is the main membrane process applied to wastewater treatment. Two successful examples of the applications, the cases of individual building reuse system and nightsoil treatment, are then shown. The latest trend of new membrane applications, i.e., immersed-type MSAS is also introduced.

  • The Ozone oxidation process was applied to increase the efficiency of reuse process when treating the secondary effluent by the membrane system. This paper focus on decreasing efficiency of membrane fouling, because of membrane fouling reduction by ozone and evaluation of application of the ozone oxidation. The feed water was secondary effluent from BNR process. The result shows that the ozone pretreatment can reduce membrane fouling effectively. Also, the improvement of treated water quality was obvious. The reduction of the membrane fouling led decrease of following pollutant and increase of lnner adsorptive ability of hydrophilic organic matter and decrease of molecular weight. MF membrane process alone can meet the domestic reuse water standards. And ozone pretreatment process also can increase the removal rates of turbidity, COD, nitrogen, and color.

  • After membrane fouling factors in acrylic wastewater were minimized by pretreatment process accompanied with $TiO_2$, it was utilized in MF/UF/RO process. After composing of ultrafiltration/reverse osmosis or microfiltration/reverseosmosiss module set according to types and kinds of membrane, the separation characteristics were examined with the variation temperature and pressure using pretreated acrylic wastewater by membrane module sets. The permeate of ultrafiltration or microfiltration module was sent to reverse osmosis module. It was found that final permeate flux of reverse osmosis module in module set 2 (MWCO 200,000 UF+RO) was excellent. It was shown that the removal efficiency of TDS, T-N and COD was very low and was not dependent on the variation of temperature and pressure in UF and MF modules. From the above result, the removal efficiency of TDS, T-N and COD was very excellent in RO module. The removal efficiency of turbidity in UF and MF module was very high (> 99% removal efficiency). Final water quality of acrylic wastewater treated by the membrane module set was satisfied with effluent allowances limit and membrane module sets were ascertained to reuse wastewater.

  • A novel process was developed to simultaneously produce invertase and yeast extract from baker's yeast using ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) membrane processing. After the extraction of invertase under the optimal condition obtained in this study, invertase was separated from yeast cells using a hollow fiber membrane with a pore size of 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The resulting permeate containing invertase was concentrated using a hollow fiber membrane with a nominal molecular weight cut-off of 30 kDa. The yeast cell and permeate solutions, which were obtained after MF and UF membrane processing, respectively, were mixed together, and the autolysis was performed at 50$^{\circ}C$ in the presence of 5% (w/v) ethanol and 1% (w/v) NaCl. As a result, the yeast extract and invertase could be simultaneously produced from baker's yeast by this novel process.
