  • In this paper, a motion adaptive deinterlacing algorithm is proposed. It consists of three parts: (1) modified edge-based line average, (2) pixel-based consequent five-field motion detection, and (3) block-based local characteristic for detecting true motion and calculating the motion intensity by using an improved method which is able to detect the inner part of moving objects precisely as well as to reduce the risk of false detection caused by intrinsic noises in the image. Depending on the detected motion activity level, it combines spatial and temporal methods with weighting factor. Simulations conducted on several video sequences indicate that the performance of the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods in terms of both subjective and objective video quality.

  • We cloned a gene cluster encoding phenanthrene-degrading enzymes on a 6.8-kb Xhol fragment from the Pseudomonas sp. DJ77 chromosomal DNA into the vector pBLUESCRIPT SIC(+). The resultant clone, containing the recombinant plilsmid pHENX7, was able to convert 3-methylcatechol to a yellow mela-cleavage compound. Since the pHENX7R in which the DNA insert was cloned in the opposite orientation lacked extradiol dioxygenase activity. the direction of transcription was established. Four polypeptides, PhnC (24 kDa). PhnD (31 kDa), PhnE (34 kDa). and PhnF (15 kDa), were identified in E coli JM101 transformed with several pHENX7-derived plasmids. The locations and extents of ~ndividual genes were determined by subcloning. The gene order was phnC-phnD-phnE-phnF-phnG, and phnC, phnD, phnE, and phnG genes encoded glutathione S-transferase, mrta-cleavage compound hydrolase, extradiol dioxygenase, mera-cleavage compound dehydrogenase, respectively.

  • Chitosan derivative, of a sulfated N-acetyl chitosan was synthesized, and the inhibitory effects of this compound on the experimental and spontaneous lung metastallc B16/BL6 melanoma bearing mice were investigated. Position of substitution with sulfate in water-soluble sulfated derivatives of chitosan were analysed by 13C-nmr. The structure of N-acetyl chitosan 3,6 0-disulfate were confirmed. The tumor growth inhibition of B16/BL6 melanoma cells has been shown at the highest level of 77.6% when sulfated N-acetyl chitosan were administered at the dose of 100mg/kg. In the lung metastasls, the sulfated N-atetyl chitosan was administered to C57BL/6B mice bearing B16/BL6 melanoma cells by I.V. injection and the number of metastasis foci of melanoma were decreased by the dose dependent manner ranging from 20 to 100mg/kg. In the spontaneous metastasis, I.V. administrations of sulfated N-acetyl chitosan after tumor inoculation resulted in marked reduction of metastatic colonies. A sulfated N-acetyl chitosan was able to partially inhibit the tumor cell adhesion by migration to laminin. These results suggested that chitosan derivative, a sulfated N-acetyl chitoasn was able to inhibit to the experimental and spontaneous metastasis models as well as cell adhesion ability.

  • A survey on the children's thought for kimchi intake and practical amount of kimchi consumption were conduction in April of 1995 to get basic information needed for the development of special kimchi for the children. And the effects of nutritional guidance on consumming kimchi was also investigated. Total of 1100 students in 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade from public and private elementary school participated in this survey. The eighty three percent of student think they should eat kimchi mainly because kimchi is good for the health(48.0%) and kimchi is our traditional food(31.8%). However, only 26.5% of children consume more than 5 pieces($4{\times}5cm$) of kimchi per mela and 64.5% consume less than 1~2 pieces. This shows that children's opinion(p<0.001), preference(p<0.001) and actual consumption(p<0.001) for kimchi was found to be very significant. Thus the nutritional guidance is important as much as the development of children's kimchi. Children wanted kimchi which is sweet, mild hot and not too strong in flavor. Ingredients children wanted in kimchi were pear, apple, tangerine, carrot and onion. Children's most favorite foods cooked with kimchi were stir fried kimchi rice and kimchi stew. But children did not like kimchi hamberger, pizza topped with kimchi and rice cooked with bean sprout and kimchi.

  • Macheon Layered Intrusion (MLI) which intruded into Precambrian gneiss complex of the northern Jirisan area, southeastern part of Youngnam (or Sobaeksan) Massif, is a layered mafic-ultramafic complex of Triassic age (ca. 223 Ma). The MLI is divided into Layered Series and Laminated Series. Layered Series is subdivided into Central Zone (Lower Zone) consisting of olivine gabbros and Peripheral Zone (Middle or Upper Zone) consisting of hornblende gabbros based on the type of cumulus texture and the main mafic phase. The Central Zone of Layered Series comprises thinly laminated olivine gabbros and uniform or thickly laminated coarse olivine gabbros which consist of mela-gabbro, troctolite, leuco-troctolite, and anorthositic rocks. Laminated Series is also subdivided into quartz-bearing biotite-pyroxene gabbros and homblende diorite and both have variable amount of interstitial quartz and microcline. Laminated series display moderately to slightly developed igneous lamination which is defined by the planar alignment of lath-shape plagioclases. Chilled margin of quartz-bearing biotite-pyroxene gabbro with surrounding Precambrian gneisses insists shallower intrusion of more felsic cognate magma evolved in the deep a little later. Rocks of Layered Series have orthocumulus to adcumulus olivine, adcumulus to intercumulus plagioclase, and intercumulus to heteradcumulus pyroxene and hornblende. Magmatic modally grading, folding, and cross-lamination are not rarely occurred in thinly layered rocks. These textural characteristics define main mechanisms of the formation of layered and laminated structure in mafic-ultramafic rocks of Macheon Layered Intrusion are gravity settling and in-situ crystallization associated with slumping and density current.
