Purpose : The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors, clinical characteristics and prognosis for the development of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in preterm infants according to the extent and site of the PVL. Methods : The medical records of infants (under 36 weeks of gestational age) delivered from January 1999 to December 2008 were reviewed. Twenty-five preterm infants with were PVL were diagnosed by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an addition 50preterm infants with no brain lesions were enrolled in this study. The perinatal and neonatal risk factors for the development of PVL was determine in these infants. Mental and Psychomotor Developmental Indices (MDI, PDI) were assessed by a clinical psychologist using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II. We compared the differences of the clinical characteristics and prognosis according to brain MRI findings. Results : Maternal fever, young maternal age, extended oxygen use, hypotension within the first week of birth, use of inotropics within the first week of birth, and respiratory distress syndrome were the risk factors associated with PVL (P <0.05). In the multivariate analysis, maternal fever and extended oxygen use were statistically significant independent risk factors (P <0.05). The mean MDI and PDI scores of the PVL group (74.4$\pm$ 27.8 and 58.0$\pm$17.7) were significantly lower than those of the control group (103.5$\pm$8.9 and 101.7$\pm$16.1, P <0.05). Conclusion : Maternal fever and extended oxygen use were independent risk factors for PVL. We should pay attention to infants who had the risk factors and follow them up closely by brain imaging study and Bayley Scales of Infant Development II.
The aim of this study is to understand the effect of structure on the dispersion of both CNT and GNF in the phase of synthesized polyurethanes matrix. Various CNT/PU and GNF/PU composite films were prepared. Polyurethane having a different hard segment was blended with both CNT and GNF. PU having HDI as hard segment showed good dispersion with both CNT and GNF because of their linear structural character and molecular kinesis while PU having aromatic ring showed poor dispersion with those due to their structural complexity. Structural effect also induced the increase of its electro conductivity. The PU/CNT composite showed a bad dispersion (because of phase separation between PU matrix and CNT) but good electro conductivity at its surface (because CNT was collected on the surface of composite film due to low density of CNT). PU/CNT and PU/GNF composite films have quite low normalized sheet resistance value compared with silver/PU nanocomposite film because the fiber type filler could have much more contact points than that of sphere shaped silver particles have.
4 kinds of Regional Special Natural Products (RSNPs), such as Anthrisci radix, Psoraleae semen, Siegesbeckiae herba and Corni fructus were examined to verify for anti-obesity effect. $PPAR\gamma$ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor $\gamma$) from 3T3-L1 cell concerning adipocyte differentiation was suppressed by different concentraton of 4 RSNPs with western blot, when treated RSNPs' extract and MDI (IBMX, Dexamethasone, Insulin) at the same time. Also, SREBP-1 (Sterol regulatory element binding protein) controlling lipogenesis and $PPAR\gamma$ expression levels were reduced by these 4 RSNPs' extract, when these chemicals after differentiation of 3T3-L1 cell. And lipid droplets were reduced by 7.5%, 14.4%, 18.3% and 30% at different concentration of Anthrisci radix from Oil Red O staining. Also, it was reduced by 2%, 4.9%, 9.3% and 38% at different concentration of Psoraleae semen. For Siegesbeckiae herba, it was inhibited by 1.4%, 6.4%, 16.4% and 30.1%, respectively. And Corni fructus was also showed by 0.9%, 6.3%, 13.7% and 33% at same concentration of Siegesbeckiae herba. These 4 kinds of RSNPs were expected for a useful material for anti-obesity materials.

This study evaluated the effect of fluid flow on the power density in a horizontal-flow microbial fuel cell (MFC). The maximum power densities in four types of flow induced by different channel types in the anode chamber were investigated. The fluid flow at each channel was analyzed using tracer tests. Results of polarization curves showed that the maximum power densities of case 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 95.7, 129.1, 190.9 and 114.2 mW/m2, respectively. Case 3 with a set of guide walls where flow had an S type-like shape showed the highest power density. Based on the Morrill Dispersion Index (MDI) value of case 4, microbial activity would be enhanced since the reactor allows even distribution of substrate but the overflow occurrence would not guarantee stable performance. Therefore, case 3 could be an effective reactor type for MFC because of high electricity generation and stable performance.
Plastic has been widely used in modern artworks' materials due to its merits of process ability and mass production. In the country, value of plastic artifact is increasing but the field of plastic study is limited to industrial purpose. In this study, Identification methods of plastic were performed by SPME-GC/MS and pyrolysis-GC/MS using trace of samples. As a result of identification using SPME-GC/MS, aromatic compounds were identified from polyvinyl chloride. And alkane compounds were identified from polyethylene, and polypropylene. Aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and diethylene glycol appeared in polyurethane based on polyester was identified from polyurethane. As a result of identification using pyrolysis- GC/MS, aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DEHP) were identified from polyvinyl chloride. Aliphatic alkenes compounds and phthalate(DIBP) were detected from polyethylene. 1-hexene, etc., were detected from polypropylene, aromatic compounds were identified from polystyrene, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate which is polyurethane basic material was confirmed from polyurethane. This study suggested that non-destructive SPME and pyrolysis-GC/MS are useful to identify compounds particularly polystyrene and polyurethane. These two analytical methods were expected to be applied for identification of unidentified plastic artworks before conservation treatment.

In this study, different types of polyether amines and H12MDI were used to synthesize water dispersed urea resins, which can be applied to coating material on the concrete slabs for bicycle road using the ordinary application equipments. The concentrations of several polyether amines with different molecular weights and the number of amine functionality were varied to set up the optimal condition for water dispersed urea resin preparation with both an excellent tensile strength and an elongation. In addition, the effect of DMPA[2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)propanoic acid] concentration on the storage stability of the water dispersed urea resin was also investigated. The formation of urea bonds from isocyanate and polyether amines was confirmed through FT-IR ATR spectroscopy. From the mechanical properties of urea resins, PU-4 and PU-6, which were prepared with both diamines and triamine of different molecular weights and number of functionality, showed the tensile strength of 10.5 N/㎟ and 12.7 N/㎟, respectively and the elongation of 1165 % and 969%, respectively. Among the water dispersed urea resin synthesized with different contents of DMPA, PU-6 showed the highest mechanical properties, a tensile strength of 14.2 N/㎟ and an elongation of 993%. In addition, the water dispersion state of this PU-6 was the most stable even after 8 weeks.

In this study, the anti-obesity activity of Smilax china methanol extract (SCME) was evaluated using a pancreatic lipase enzyme inhibition assay, and a cell culture model system. Results indicated that, SCME effectively inhibited pancreatic lipase enzyme activity in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, SCME significantly suppressed insulin, dexamethasone, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine-induced adipocyte differentiation, lipid accumulation, and triglyceride contents on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, in a dose-dependent manner. The anti-adipogenic effect was modulated by cytidine-cytidine-adenosine-adenosine-thymidine (CCAAT)/enhancer binding proteins (C/EBP) ${\alpha}$, $C/EBP{\beta}$, and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ gene and protein expressions. Moreover, SCME triggered lipolysis effects dose-dependently on adipocyte. Taken together, these results provide an important new insight into SCME, indicating that it possesses anti-obesity activity through pancreatic lipase inhibition, anti-adipogenic and lipolysis effects. SCME may therefore be utilized as a promising source in the field of nutraceuticals. The identification of active compounds that confer the anti-obesity activities of SCME may be a logical next step.
The synthesis of bio polyol from renewable resources has attracted attention in recent years. In particular, it is important to take advantage of bio polyols in the synthesis of polymers. In this study, a series of dimethylformamide (DMF) based polyurethanes were synthesized using polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol (PO3G: polytrimethylene ether glycol prepared from 1, 3-propanediol produced by fermentation from corn sugar), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butandiol (BD). The properties of prepared polyurethane films and the cell structure of wet type artificial leather were investigated. As the bio polyol content increased, the tensile strength of polyurethane films decreased, however, the elongation at break increased significantly. As a result of thermal characteristics analysis, the glass transition temperature of polyurethanes increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol. As a result of comparing the cell characteristics of wet type artificial leathers prepared in this study, it was found that the number and uniformity of cells formed in the artificial leather samples increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol in polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol. From these results, it was found that DMF-based polyurethane containing an appropriate amount of bio polyol could be used for wet type artificial leather. The bio textile analysis system according to ASTM standard was used to measure the bio carbon content of polyurethane. The content of bio carbon increased proportionally with the increase of bio polyol content used in polyurethane synthesis.

This study was carried out at a local limestone mine to analyze the ventilation efficiency of the shaft equipped with a main fan. The results show that its ventilation efficiency is clearly verified for the natural as well as the mechanical ventilation. The airflow rate of $11.7m^3/s$ was induced by the natural ventilation force and the maximum quantity is almost same as the airflow rate estimated by monitoring the average temperatures in the upcast and downcast air columns. Meanwhile, the airflow rate exhausted by the main fan through the shaft was $20.3{\sim}24.8m^3/s$; variation of the quantity was caused by the upward shift of the mine ventilation characteristic curve due to the frequent movement of the equipment. This indicates efforts are required to reduce the ventilation resistance and raise the quantity supplied by the main fan. The turbulent diffusion coefficients along the 1912 m long airway from the portal to the shaft bottom was estimated to be $15m^2/s$ and $18m^2/s$. Since these higher coefficients imply that contaminants will be dispersed at a faster velocity than the airflow, prompt exhaust method should be planned for the effective air quality control. The ventilation shaft and main fan are definitely what local limestone mines inevitably need for better working environment and sustainable development.
Background : Many clinicians are reluctant to prescribe systemic corticosteroids to manage an asthmatic attack because of many complications such as osteoporosis, cushing's syndrome, diabetes, hypertension and bleeding tendency. The use of nebulized budesonide may be of value in some infants, old men, and in particular adult asthmatic patients who complain of severe dyspnea. A clinical validation and steroid-sparing effect of nebulized budesonide in asthmatic adults and COPD were evaluated, and the short-term effects of budesonide use on the HPA axis were assessed. Materials and Methods : Study A was prospectively done with 41 patients diagnosed with pure asthma and 30 patients diagnosed with COPD (including asthmatic component) in Soonchunhyang Hospital, Chunan from June. 2000 to Sep. 2001. They were treated with nebulized budesonide including systemic steroids (Group 1), a budesonide tubuhaler including a systemic steroid (Group 2), or only the systemic steroid(Group 3). The peak flow rate, arterial blood gas in room air, pulmonary function test, symptom scoring, steroid amount and hospital stay were analyzed. Study B was conducted with 19 patients to evaluate the short-term effects on the HPA axis of treatment with nebulized budesonide 1mg twice daily and a budesonide turbuhaler 5 puffs twice daily. The adrenal function was assessed prior to budesonide inhalation and after 7 days of budesonide inhalation. Results : In the pure asthmatic patients, the mean value of the symptoms (dyspnea, wheezing, cough, night asthma) or the arterial BGAs, total amounts of steroid or hospital stay and the difference in the results of the pulmonary function tests or peak expiratory flow rate were similar in the three groups. In COPD with an asthmatic component, there were no significant differences among the three groups. Although nebulized budesonide suppressed HPA function,(p=0.006) the HPA responses from the nebulized budesonide and turbuhaler budesonide were similar (p=0.288) Conclusion : This result suggests that systemic steroid should only be made available for acute asthmatic patients irrespective of the inhaled budesonides. Nebulized budesonide at the therapeutic dose has similar effects on the HPA axis compared to that of turbuhaler budesonide.
