  • Purpose : To evaluate the mucoid degeneration (MD) of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee by correlation of MRI findings with pathology, in the patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Materials and Methods : This study included 17 patients (mean 68.8 years old) who underwent preoperative MRI. In proton density-weighted sagittal and coronal images ACLs were evaluated for the thickness and signal intensity (SI). Total knee replacement arthroplasty was performed and the pathologic findings of ACL were evaluated. MD was classified as 3 grades according to the degenerated amount in microscopy. Thickness and SI was evaluated as normal or increased on MRI. Results : All of the 4 patients who showed thickened ACL showed increased SI on MRI. All of the 8 patients with increased SI of the ACL on MRI had MD in the ACL. However, remained 9 patients also had MD, in spite of their normal thickness and SI on MRI. Calcification was seen in 5 patients. Conclusion : Eight cases who showed ACL thickening or increased SI on MRI were well correlated with MD, however, because the other nine cases who showed normal thickness and normal SI of ACL on MRI also showed MD in pathology, normal MRI finding should not exclude the possibility of MD of ACL.

  • This study was conducted to figure out the possibility of non-drainage in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) hydroponics culture. Plants were grown under 3 different levels of drainage, standard (20~40%, SD), minimum (5~10%, MD), and non-drainage (ND). Throughout cultivation periods, constant water content and electrolyte conductivity changes in root zone were observed in SD in the range of 60~70% and $1.5{\sim}2.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. ND treatment caused the fluctuation in water content and electrolyte conductivity of root zone and its change ranges were 30~50% in water content and $2{\sim}6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in electrolyte conductivity, but ND treatment did not decrease fruit quality. Even if fruit fresh weight was slightly lower in ND with 1,863 g, than in SD with 1,990 g, the fruit weight in ND meets standard market size, 1,800~2,000 g. Higher soluble solids content was observed in fruit in ND than in SD and MD. Total amount of drainage per plant was 27,718, 15,769 and 2,346 mL in SD, MD and ND, respectively. SD showed $83.2m^3$ drainage, 34.5% drainage of irrigation amount whereas required total irrigation amount in ND was very low with $7m^3$.

  • Fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora(Burrill), is a destructive disease of apple that damages blossoms, shoots, and woody plant organs. The fire blight disease is a worldwide problem for pome fruit growers because all popular apple cultivars are susceptible to the disease. Recently, fire blight of apple rootstocks has become a serious economic problem in high-density orchard systems in korea. The most commonly used dwarfing root stocks, M.9 and M.26, are highly susceptible to E. amylovora. The objective of the apple rootstock-breeding program has been to develop pomologically excellent rootstocks with resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, including fire blight. Budagovsky 9 (B.9) apple rootstock is reported to be highly susceptible when inoculated with E. amylovora, although results from multiple trials showed that B.9 is resistant to rootstock blight infection in field plantings. So we tried to collect the apple rootstocks traits of fire blight resistance. The apple genotype Malus Robusta 5 (MR5) represents an ideal donor for fire blight resistance because it was described as resistant to all currently known European strains of the pathogen. The PCR for detecting the MR5 gene using the primers Md_MR5_FL_F/Md_MR5_FL_R. The results of these experiments confirmed some apple rootstocks traits of fire blight resistance showed the MR5. Furthermore, this gene is confirmed to be the resistance determinant of Mr5 as the transformed lines undergo the same gene-for-gene interaction in the host-pathogen relationship MR5-E. amylovora.

  • Bioassay-directed fractionation of Draba nemorosa led to the isolation of two new phenolic glycosides, 1-O- (sinapoyl)-glucitol (2) and 1,3-disinapoylgentiobiose (5) along with five known phenolic glycosides (1, 3, 4, 6, and 7). Their structures were characterized based on spectroscopic methods (2D NMR, HRTOFMS, IR, and UV). The isolated compounds showed antioxidant activities (IC50) in the range of 14-98 mM which were estimated by DPPH radical-scavenging assay.

  • In this study, an innovative media, iron mixed ceramic pellet (IMCP) has been developed for arsenic (As) removal from groundwater. A porous, solid-phase IMCP (2-3 mm) was manufactured by combining clay soil, rice bran, and Fe(0) powder at $600^{\circ}C$. Both the As(III) and As(V) adsorption characteristics of IMCP were studied in several batch experiments. Structural analysis of the IMCP was conducted using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis to understand the mechanism of As removal. The adsorption of As was found to be dependent on pH, and exhibited strong adsorption of both As(III) and As(V) at pH 5-7. The adsorption process was described to follow a pseudo-second-order reaction, and the adsorption rate of As(V) was greater than that of As(III). The adsorption data were fit well with both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities of As(III) and As(V) from the Langmuir isotherm were found to be 4.0 and 4.5 mg/g, respectively. Phosphorus in the water had an adverse effect on both As(III) and As(V) adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that iron(III) oxides/hydroxides are aggregated on the surface of IMCP. XAFS analysis showed a partial oxidation of As(III) and adsorption of As(V) onto the iron oxide in the IMCP.

  • This paper presents a key distribution scheme based on the Yacobi scheme that does not use the secret key provided by key distribution center, but uses instead a random number generated y the user. The scheme is independent of the exposure of the secret key. this paper also presented the key distribution schemes based on the Diffie-Hellman (DH) and ID (identity). The schemes based on the solving of the discrete logarithm and prime resolution into factors are better on the expose of secret key. The proposed scheme based on the DH was applied to VSAT satellite communications and simulated on PC using Montgomery algorithm for modular and MD5 (Message Digest) for hashing function.

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to investigate the thermophysical characteristics and the stability of liquid threads for various conditions. A cylindrical thread in the simulation domain is made of Lennard-Jones molecules. The surface tension of liquid threads can be determined from local densities, local normal and transverse components of the pressure force. In order to understand the effects of thread radii on surface tensions, the Tolman equation is modified on the basis of the cylindrical coordinates for prediction of surface tensions. Surface tensions calculated from the MD simulation agree with the prediction from the modified Tolman equation. In addition, surface tensions decrease linearly with increasing system temperature. For a binary system, the surface tension decreased linearly compared to that for a pure system with increasing binary ratio of solute molecules which have relatively large value of the affinity coefficient. For a fixed binary ratio, the surface tension increased slightly with the affinity coefficient and the maximum value appear around where the affinity coefficient is 1.5 and decreased rapidly for upper value of 1.5. In addition, the critical wavelengths of perturbations are proven to be directly proportional to the equimolar dividing radii of the liquid threads.

  • Recent trend is to use the lightweight concrete in the construction industry because it has several advantages over normal weight concrete. The Lightweight concrete can be produced from the industrial waste materials. In South East Asian region, researchers are very keen to use the waste materials such as oil palm shell (OPS) and palm oil clinker (POC) from the palm oil producing industries. Extensive research has been done on lightweight concrete using OPS or POC over the last three decades. In this paper the aggregate properties of OPS and POC are plotted in conjunction with mechanical and structural behavior of OPS concrete (OPSC) and POC concrete (POCC). Recent investigation on the use of crushed OPS shows that OPSC can be produced to medium and high strength concrete. The density of OPSC and POCC is around 20-25% lower than normal weight concrete. Generally, mechanical properties of OPSC and POCC are comparable with other types of lightweight aggregate concrete. It can be concluded from the previous study that OPSC and POCC have the noteworthy potential as a structural lightweight concrete.

  • Background: This retrospective study aims to describe the airway management and to search predictive parameter for difficult intubation in 700 patients undergoing oromaxillary surgery. Methods: The medical records of 700 patients undergone oromaxillary surgery were reviewed for airway management during perioperative period. The cases of difficult intubation were selected and those radiologic findings were reviewed. The mandibular depth (MD), mandibular length (ML), thyromental distance (TMD) were measured. Results: In 41 cases difficult intubation were recorded in anesthetic record. The grade of Cormack and Lehane was III in 36 patients and IV in 5 cases. The MD of difficult intubation cases was $4.2{\pm}3.2\;cm$. The ML of difficult intubation cases was $10.1{\pm}3.8\;cm$. The TMD of difficult intubation cases was $5.9{\pm}4.3\;cm$. Under the fiberoptic guided awake intubation was undertaken in 75 patient. In none of the cases was failed nasotracheal intubation. Conclusions: The patients undergoing oromaxillar surgery have a potentially difficult airway but, if managed properly during perioperative preiod, morbidity and mortality can be reduced or avoided. The radiologic findings were poor predict for difficult intubation. The fiberoptic guided awake intubation is a safe alternative to direct laryngoscopic intubation.
